FIFA, WHO, EU and EU Parliament Sports Group renew push for elimination of violence against women

0

FIFA, the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Commission and the European Parliament Sports Group have joined forces to raise awareness about the risk of domestic violence and call for an end to violence against women and children.

Following the joint campaigns earlier this year, the renewed #SafeHome campaign is a joint response to be launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25th November.

The announcement comes as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect populations across the world and stay-at-home measures are re-introduced in many countries, putting both women and children experiencing abuse at greater risk. Of importance in this context is the recently published EU Strategy on victims’ rights (2020-2025).

Speaking on the renewed campaign, Gianni Infantino, FIFA President said:

“Violence has no place in our society, and sports and football are no exception. FIFA is fully committed to continuing our work with leading international organisations to help end violence, by using football as a platform to raise awareness on this and other key issues facing society today.”

“The world must remain steadfast in our efforts to end violence against women and girls. Preventing and addressing this pervasive violation of human rights should be a key part of every country’s response to COVID-19,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “Every one of us must stand with survivors to ensure that they are safe and receive the support and essential services they need at all times.”

Helena Dalli, EU Commissioner for Equality, said:

“Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and has no place in the European Union, or anywhere else in the world. This pandemic is a test for humanity. It has led to heightened exposure of women and children to domestic violence. We must eradicate this shadow pandemic.

“The EU is committed to working incessantly with its partners to prevent and combat violence against women. We must step up, our efforts to achieve gender equality and eradicate violence against women and children.”

“I’m honoured to be part of the #SafeHome joint campaign on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“We all have a duty to speak up to protect women’s rights and fight any form of violence and this is particularly important during the current circumstances, with confinement often increasing the risk of domestic abuse. Let’s harness the power of sport to raise awareness of this issue and strive to put an end to violence and abuse.” added Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.

“With almost one in three women worldwide having experienced violence at some point in their lifetime, domestic violence has devastating impact on the lives of so many within society.

“30 % of women around the world have been raped, beaten, forced to act or abused at least once in their lives. This is a real scourge that we must tackle without hindrance, at all levels of government and on every ground.

America in moral free fall, John MacArthur warns

0

Outspoken California pastor John MacArthur appeared on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” Thursday to discuss his state’s coronavirus restrictions on religious worship and what he referred to as the “moral free fall” engulfing the United States.

Host Laura Ingraham began the segment by noting that while a “judge has ordered San Diego strip clubs to be reopened,” California churches “are still fighting for the right to open their doors once again.”

She proceeded to introduce the 81-year-old MacArthur, the pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, describing him as “a thorn in the side of California’s COVID crusaders.”

“How do strip clubs deserve more constitutional protections than churches at this point?” Ingraham asked MacArthur.

The pastor, who also runs a syndicated Christian teaching radio and television program, responded by offering to explain “the big picture,” namely that “America’s in a moral free fall.”

“You murder the babies in the womb. If they survive the womb, you try to seduce them into transgender sexual deviation when they’re young. If they survive that, you corrupt them with a godless education,” he contended.

“If they survive that, you have divorce in the family and if they grow to be adults, you drown them in a sea of pornography,” MacArthur added. “This is a nation so far down in the sewer of immorality and wickedness that nothing surprises me.”

Ingraham asked MacArthur to address a Los Angeles Times article with the headline “COVID Outbreak Strikes LA Megachurch That Defied Public Health Orders,” which she characterized as “not true.”

According to MacArthur, the article’s portrayal of an “outbreak” at Grace Community Church lacked the appropriate context.

“We had three part-time security guards who went to some event somewhere and I guess they were checked and tested positive,” he explained. “These were three part-time security guards, none of them was ill and within a few days, they were back at work. The Times writer picked up on that and called it an outbreak at Grace Community Church and they said about me that I had ‘mocked COVID’ and I was getting my due.”

MacArthur recalled how the health department visited the church, finding no evidence of a coronavirus outbreak.

“They sent us a letter and said you are removed from our website as having had any outbreak at all,” he recounted.

“We’re talking about [6,000 to] 7,000 people have been in church for months — Sunday after Sunday — no one ill, no one in the hospital and no one dies,” the preacher said. “We’re like a living illustration of the narrative of COVID being a lie.”

The segment concluded with a discussion about the hypocrisy of politicians who fail to abide by the coronavirus restrictions they impose on everyone else, specifically California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

MacArthur contended that throughout history, “every revolution took place in a time when the powers of the people in authority were enlarged because of a supposed emergency.”

“Power-hungry people are using this emergency to gain greater power. This is historic, this is nothing new and if people don’t fight back, they’re going to fall victim to whatever the intention of this revolution is,” he warned.

MacArthur has emerged as a staunch critic of the restrictions on worship services implemented to stop the spread of coronavirus. He defied orders barring churches from holding indoor worship services and ended up suing the state of California over its worship restrictions.

MacArthur has faced the prospect of fines and the threat of jail time as a result of his refusal to comply with coronavirus regulations.

Other California pastors have also been threatened with steep penalties for failure to abide by state and local coronavirus restrictions.

Pastor Mike McClure of San Jose’s Calvary Chapel has faced hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for holding indoor church services while North Valley Baptist Church in Santa Clara was fined more than $50,000 for conducting in-person church services, violating social distancing guidelines and singing.

Catholics in San Francisco marched in protest of the city’s strict coronavirus restrictions on worship services. Not long after the “Free the Mass” protest took place, Mayor London Breed lifted the restriction that enabled only one person at a time to enter a church for prayer.

Family Of Slain Newspaper Vendor Demands N500m Compensation, Threatens Legal Action

0

Succeeding the murder of newspaper vendor Ifeanyichukwu Okereke by a security aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the family of the victim has demanded the sum of N500m as compensation.

The family made this demand in a letter dated November 23, 2020, and promised to take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands were not met within seven days.

A part of the letter reads, “Our clients have instructed us to make from your good self, the following modest demands: That you use your good offices to ensure the immediate prosecution of your security aide (Abdullahi Hassan), who went on a frolic of his own, clearly acted outside the purview of his duty and responsibility by shooting to death an innocent, harmless.

“That you adequately compensate the Okereke family with a modest sum of N500m only. This monetary demand can never adequately replace or take the place of their son, husband, brother, and breadwinner’s life. But it will at least mitigate the obvious trauma and hardship the premature demise of their irreplaceable breadwinner has placed on them.

“Take note therefore that it is our clients’ firm instruction that in the event that you fail, refuse and/or neglect to accede to or proffer reasonable compensatory terms to our above modest demands within seven days from the date of this letter, we shall without any further correspondences from us, take appropriate legal steps to enforce our clients’ constitutional rights.”

The operative who shot Okereke, Abdullahi Hassan has since been arrested and the speaker also paid the family a condolence visit where he promised that the family would not suffer

An investigation in partnership with the government would help determine the source of the interference.

Why It’s Time For You To Swap Your Hairnets or Bonnets!

0

The mention of bonnets may conjure up some images from the middle ages if you’ve ever heard of it or if you have naturally very straight hair. You will not be wrong, as the word bonnets have been used to describe a host of headgears for both men and women since the middle ages. The word is french derived where it originally indicated a type of material. However, it has translated into much more. From the headgear used by female servants as a form of protection from the sun to the stylish headpiece, worn by the elite women in informal settings, every generation, and every social class, male and female have worn bonnets at one time.
Bonnets have also been an indication of devotion to religion and worn by the Amish and Mennonite denominations as a Christian head covering.

But the bonnets were talking about here, the ones that help us get fabulous hair is a headgear of another make! Let me introduce, the silk or satin bonnet!

Bonnets are the most effective, least expensive way to protect your hair. They help keep your hair in place, like your regular hairnets and stocking caps, but a silk or satin bonnet makes sure that your hair’s moisture stays in place too.
The majority of our beddings in this part of the world are done with cotton, and the way cotton comes makes it easy for your hair to attach itself to the fiber. When the inevitable tossing and turning happens, the attached strands break off.
Sleeping without proper hair protection can extremely dehydrate your hair and stunt its growth. that’s why getting a bonnet is half the journey to getting the hair you can be proud of.
When it comes to choosing between silk or satin, note that satin is much cheaper than silk, but if you want to use just natural fibers, then silk may be the better of the two.
If the bonnet for one reason or the other doesn’t work for you, there is the option of a silk or satin scarf or a pillowcase in either fabric.
The satin or silk pillowcase, bonnet, and scarf will maintain the natural oils in your hair and protect from friction between your hair and other surfaces.

Contrary to popular belief, while the bonnet is common amongst nappy or kinky-haired women, it’s not peculiar to them. Anybody with hair on their head that they want to protect can wear a bonnet, use a silk pillowcase or tie a scarf which is the equivalent of a Durag.

So jump on this easy wagon today and save yourself from bad hair days cause this trend has come to stay.

2020 Thanksgiving Turkeys Gallantly Arrive in Washington D.C

0

In 1920, U.S. turkey growers produced one turkey for every 29 persons in the U.S. Today growers produce nearly one turkey for every person in the country.

The male turkey is called a tom. The female turkey is called a hen. The turkey was domesticated in Mexico and brought to Europe in the 16th century. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States.

In 2012, turkey was the # 4 protein choice for American consumers behind chicken, beef and pork. 88% of Americans surveyed by the National Turkey Federation eat turkey on Thanksgiving.

46 million turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving, 22 million on Christmas and 19 million turkeys on Easter.

It became a tradition (since carried on by all of Bush’s successors) for the president to issue a “pardon” to the turkey, sparing the turkey’s life. It’s a tradition that the turkeys be picked from the chairperson of the NTF’s home state, occasionally from the chair’s own farm.

It was President Abraham Lincoln who proclaimed in 1863 that Thanksgiving would be held the last Thursday of November.

And for 2020 Thanksgiving the two turkeys have arrived Washington DC, with a nice reception.

Taiwan’s Leader Launches Domestically Made Submarine Production

0

Taiwan’s President inaugurated the production of domestically made submarines Tuesday in the southern city of Kaohsiung, in a step forward for the island’s defense strategy at a time of elevated tensions with China.

This submarine is an important part of allowing our navy to develop asymmetric warfare and to intimidate and block enemy ships from surrounding Taiwan’s main island,” said President Tsai Ing-wen. “Now, with the construction of the submarine to its future commission, we will certainly let the world know our persistence in safeguarding our sovereignty.”

Tsai has made boosting Taiwan’s indigenous defense capacity a central pillar of her defense policy. Recently, she relaunched the military aviation industry with the production of new trainer jets and has pushed for the development of more sophisticated systems by utilizing the island’s high-tech industries.

At the same time, she has gained approval from the U.S. for the purchase of billions of dollars in weapons, including upgraded F-16 fighter jets, armed drones, rocket systems and Harpoon missiles capable of hitting both ships and land targets.

Rooney reveals that Cristiano Ronaldo not the best he played with

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is not the best player he played alongside during his career.

Rooney, who is the Red Devils and England’s all-time record goalscorer, played alongside some of the biggest names in football during his time at Old Trafford and with the Three Lions.
Among those players is five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, who featured alongside Rooney on 206 occasions, but the Juventus superstar has been pipped to the honour by former United midfielder Paul Scholes.
