The law also provides for a review of the minimum wage every three years.

The last minimum wage of N30,000 was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Wakama’s triumph is not only significant for its immediate impact but also for its place in the annals of D’Tigress history. The victory marks Nigeria’s first win at the Olympics in 20 years, underscoring Wakama’s profound influence on the team.

Who is Rena Wakama?

Early Life and Career

Rena Wakama is a native of Okrika in Rivers State, Nigeria who was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, the United States on April 11, 1992.

Rena Wakama’s father is known as Johnson Wakama and her mother’s name is Rosana Oba.

She graduated from Western Carolina University in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. During her days at the University, Wakama served with the school’s women’s basketball team, known as “Catamounts.”

Rena Wakama was introduced to basketball at a young age by her cousin, Onimisi Aiyede. Her passion for the sport grew as she played through high school and then at the University of Western Carolina (WSU), where she was a standout player for the Catamounts.

Wakama’s playing career, though brief, included a stint with the D’Tigress and First Bank in Nigeria. Her real calling, however, emerged in coaching. After a brief period with Manhattan College, she transitioned to coaching roles that would eventually lead her to the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF).

Wakama’s appointment as the head coach of the D’Tigress came in June 2023, just a month before the Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Rwanda. Despite skepticism and criticism about her relative inexperience compared to her predecessor, Otis Hughley, Wakama embraced the challenge with determination.

Her appointment was followed by open tryouts across major cities to scout new talent, leading to a significant reshuffling of the team. With several key players retiring or not making the squad, Wakama was tasked with building a competitive team from a depleted roster.

Afrobasket Triumph

Nigeria's D'Tigress and 11 other teams have been confirmed for the Paris 2024 Olympic games women's basketball event.

Against the odds, Wakama led the D’Tigress to victory at the 2023 Women’s Afrobasket, making history as the first female coach to win the tournament since its inception in 1966. Under her leadership, Nigeria defeated Senegal 84-74 in the final, securing their place as the only team to win the Afrobasket title four times in a row.

Ezinne Kalu, making her return to the team since the Tokyo 2020 Games, was particularly impressive. She scored 19 points and contributed five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Her performance was a significant factor in Nigeria’s success.

Dangote Refinery to Import Crude from Brazil, America

0

The Dangote Refinery has concluded plans to supply crude oil from Brazil and the United States of America by August this year to complement its refining capacity.

The Chief Commercial Officer, Dangote Industries Limited, Rabi’u Umar told newsmen in Kano state Northwest Nigeria that, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), is supplying insufficient crude oil for its production demand, hence it is planning to source from Brazil and America.

Umar noted that, NNPC only supplies 33 percent of crude to the refinery, disclosing that it had to look elsewhere to source the remaining 67 percent to meet its production capacity.

He said the refinery, which has the capacity of refining 650,000 per day, could not depend on short supply from the Nigeria’s oil company.

“First of all the refinery is here in Nigeria. We have the crude oil here in Nigeria. We thought we would get the crude oil here and refined it here in our refinery for the benefit of the country and the citizens.

Dangote Refinery To Become Largest Single-Train Refinery In The World

“Ironically, the country takes the crude oil overseas for refining while we have a refinery, one of the biggest in the world.

“So, we will not stay idle. We have to look for other sources to meet our production capacity. If we get the crude oil supply here in the country we have no reason to go overseas.

“Even now, we are planning to supply crude oil from countries like Brazil and USA,” he said.

Umar said the refinery had commenced supplies to foreign countries since February, disclosing that they receive orders from different countries for supply, especially aviation fuel.

The Chief Commercial Officer also revealed that the refinery needs 15 cargos of crude oil in September but NNPCL promised only 5 to it, lamenting that they see the government’s lackadaisical actions towards the refinery as sabotage.

According to him, the refinery should be celebrated and embraced by the government rather than painting it black as it is the biggest employer of labour with over 50,000 workers at the moment.

He emphasized that against the government’s false narratives, the refinery had started on a positive note as the quality of its refined products are would standard.

He said even the House of Representatives, under the leadership of the its speaker, visited the refinery, saw the difference and was satisfied with the quality of the products.

The official also said, “we are here to defend ourselves and all the government narratives are not true. We urge the people to take samples of our products to ascertain their quality.

“We will not be deterred by the government’s criticism. We will continue until we reach the promised land”.

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, alongside NNPCL, had been locked in a dispute, ranging from monopoly allegations to supply of crude for the refinery, substandard fuel imports and ownership of blending plants in Malta.

However, Dangote, in a new revelation, said for the $20 billion refinery to meet its production demand, it must look for other sources of crude oil supply overseas as the NNPCL allocation is insufficient.

U.K. Government Delay Universities Free Speech Fines

0

Controversial new powers for universities and student unions to be fined for failing to uphold Free Speech have been put on hold by the UK government.

Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson said it would allow time to consider whether the law, which was due to come into force next week, would be repealed.

In the statement to parliament, Phillipson also said the regulator, the Office for Students (OfS) should be more sharply focused on the financial stability of universities.

A review of the OfS also, says the government and regulator should offer support and guidance to universities struggling financially.

The Higher Education Freedom of Speech Act, which was passed last year, said universities had a duty to secure and promote the importance of freedom of speech and academic expression.

It would have allowed the OfS to fine or give sanctions to higher education providers and student unions in England from next week.

It also included a new complaints scheme for students, staff and visiting speakers, who could seek compensation if they suffer from a breach of a university’s free- speech obligations.

Paris Sorry For Any Offence Over Olympic Opening Ceremony

0

Paris Olympics organisers said Sunday they were “really sorry” if any offence was caused by their daring and quirky opening ceremony while denying any intention to “disrespect” religion after complaints from French bishops.

Some Catholic groups and French bishops have condemned “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity” in the parade on Friday choreographed by theatre director Thomas Jolly.

Criticism has focused on a scene involving dancers, drag queens and a DJ in poses that recalled depictions of the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus is said to have taken with his apostles.

“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group,” Paris 2024 spokeswoman Anne Descamps told reporters on Sunday.

“If people have taken any offence, we are of course really, really sorry,” she added.

Jolly, 42, denied taking inspiration from the Last Supper in his nearly four-hour production, which took place in driving rain along the River Seine.

The scene also featured French actor Philippe Katerine, who appeared on a silver serving dish, almost naked and painted blue.

He was meant to be Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and pleasure, who was father of Sequana, the goddess of the River Seine.

“The idea was to do a big pagan party linked to the gods of Olympus,” Jolly told the BFM channel on Sunday.

“You’ll never find in my work any desire to mock or denigrate anyone. I wanted a ceremony that brings people together, that reconciles, but also a ceremony that affirms our Republican values of liberty, equality and fraternity,” he added.

In one of the other striking moments of the ceremony, a woman holding a bloodied severed head and intended to be executed French queen Marie-Antoinette appeared in a window of the Conciergerie, a building where she was imprisoned after the 1789 French Revolution.

She was later guillotined along with her husband Louis XVI.

“Certainly we were not glorifying this instrument of death which is the guillotine,” Jolly added.
