Borrusia Dortmund Put One Leg In First Champions League Final In 11 Years

0

PSG will have to fight back from a goal down if they are to play in the UEFA Champions League final later this month.

Edin Terzić’s men have secured a slender advantage after beating PSG 1-0 at the Signal Iduna Park in the Champions League semi-final first leg match.

Dortmund’s hero of the night was Niclas Fullkrug, who scored a glorious goal in the 36th minute of the game. He brilliantly controlled a long ball from defender Nico Schlotterbeck before slotting past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

How it happened

It was a game of numerous chances at both ends, but poor finishing meant the scoreline remained 1-0 despite the many great chances that were created.

Real Madrid-borne Kylian Mbappe hit the post after some fine footwork in the Dortmund box. His curling shot beat Gregor Kobel but not the frame of the post. The rebound fell to Achraf Hakimi, who also fired a shot that hit the woodwork.

PSG would have equalised, but they missed some glaring chances – chief culprit was Fabián Ruiz, who missed two free headers in the second half when he was put through on goal by an exquisite cross from Vitinha.

Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho was the star of the show and terrorised PSG’s defense all night with his brilliant runs and tricks. On one occasion Niclas Fullkrug couldn’t profit from Sancho’s brilliant cutback, firing over when he was unmarked in the box.

Both teams will square up again in six days’ time at the Parc des Princes. If Dortmund can hold their nerves, they will be playing in their first UCL final since the 2012/2013 season when they lost to Bayern Munich.

However, PSG will come out all guns blazing to have another chance to win the one trophy that has eluded them in their history.

Van Persie Lands First Senior Coaching Job

0

Netherlands’ all-time leading goal scorer, Robin Van Persie, is set to step into his first senior coaching role with SC Heerenveen, according to reports from AD. The former Dutch international striker will replace current manager Kees van Wonderen for the upcoming season.

Van Persie has been making strides in his coaching career since 2020, coaching youth teams at Feyenoord and completing crucial parts of his UEFA license, including training at Manchester United’s Carrington facility. Despite Feyenoord’s efforts to keep him within their youth setup, Van Persie has set his sights on senior management.

However, Feyenoord did not consider him for the managerial position, leading Van Persie to seek opportunities elsewhere. Despite this setback, Van Persie’s impressive playing career, which includes successes in the English Premier League and with the Netherlands national team, provides a solid foundation for his coaching endeavors.

SC Heerenveen, currently tenth in the Eredivisie standings, faces challenges ahead, as highlighted by their recent 0-8 defeat to PSV. Van Persie will look to bring his experience and leadership to guide the team through these challenges as he embarks on his managerial journey.

I Did Not Influence Finidi George’s Appointment As Super Eagles Coach – Amaju Pinnick

0

Former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has denied influencing the appointment of Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Despite expressing his preference for Finidi, Pinnick clarified that he did not interfere in the NFF’s decision-making process regarding the coaching position. Finidi ultimately secured the role over Emmanuel Amuneke.

Pinnick, who currently serves on the FIFA council, emphasized his positive relationship with NFF president Ibrahim Gusau. He stated that Nigerians tend to disrupt harmony in Nigerian football and suggested that his synergy with Gusau should not be misinterpreted as him imposing his choices.

“The president (Ibrahim Gusau) is very capable, always working round the clock,” Pinnick says.

“What I observed is that Nigerians don’t like to see peace in Nigerian football, they don’t like synergy.

“If I have a good synergy with my successor, I don’t think there’s any reason to say that I’m the one that chose Finidi George.

“Why should I be? Gusau was a key member in (Aminu) Maigari’s regime. Then in my own regime, he was very cardinal.

“He understands the dynamics, the theatrics, the politics, the game. And he’s an accountant, very prudent, so people should not just say things.”

Time To Trust Our Own – NFF  President Reflects On New Super Eagles Coach Appointment

0

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has emphasised the difficulty of the decision to appoint Finidi George as the new permanent coach of the Super Eagles.

Despite the challenge, Gusau believes it’s time to show faith in homegrown talent.

Following the conclusion of Jose Peseiro’s contract after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Finidi George, who had been serving as interim manager, has now officially taken over the role.

Gusau stated, “It wasn’t an easy decision. We’ve to begin to trust our own.” He expressed the NFF’s commitment to supporting Finidi and giving him the necessary respect and backing when he added, “We will give Finidi all the respect and support he needs.”

The decision to appoint Finidi reflects a desire to endorse a Nigerian coach after Peseiro’s tenure.

Gusau believes that Finidi, currently managing Enyimba, deserves the opportunity to lead the national team despite his limited experience at the highest level.

Finidi George boasts an impressive playing career, representing Nigeria in 62 international matches and contributing to their successes in the 1994 AFCON and the Olympic Games in Atlanta ’96. Additionally, he has showcased his coaching abilities by guiding Enyimba to the Nigerian Premier Football League title in 2022/23 and maintaining their competitive edge in the current season.

Watch Belonging to Titanic’s Richest Passenger Sells for Record-Breaking $1.471 M.

0

A gold pocket watch recovered from the body of John Jacob Astor, the richest man on the Titanic, sold on Saturday at auction for a record–breaking £1.175 million ($1.471 million). It is the highest amount ever paid for Titanic memorabilia.

The watch was sold by Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, England, to a private collector in the United States.

Astor, a renowned businessman who made his fortune in the fur trade, was 47 years old when the Titanic sank in 1912. According to accounts from survivors, Astor didn’t believe the ship was in any kind of immediate danger: After he helped his new wife Madeleine board lifeboat four, Astor was last seen smoking a cigarette and talking with another passenger. His body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean seven days later on April 22, with his 14-carat gold Waltham pocket watch engraved with his initials. His wife survived.

At the time, Astor was not only the richest passenger on the Titanic but was also one of the richest in the world, with a net worth of approximately $87 million or several billion dollars today.

After its recovery, the watch was passed from Astor’s son Vincent to the son of his father’s executive secretary William Dobbyn.

The sale of the watch surpasses the previous highest amount paid for a Titanic artifact. Until now, a violin that played as the ship sank held the record at $1.6 million, also sold at Henry Aldridge & Son.

The violin case was sold at the same auction as the pocket watch, and fetched £360,000 ($451,000).

Titanic memorabilia, auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told the PA news agency, “reflect not only the importance of the artefacts themselves and their rarity but they also show the enduring appeal and fascination with the Titanic story.”

Tinubu Vows To Spearhead Economic Reform for Growth

0

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has stated his commitment to spearheading transformative reforms aimed at revitalising the nation and enhancing the welfare of its citizens.

Speaking at the commencement of an Economic Retreat for House of Representatives members in Abuja, President Tinubu underscored the urgency of these reforms, acknowledging that some are long overdue.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu emphasised the imperative of diversifying Nigeria’s economy beyond its historical reliance on the oil and gas sector.

While recognizing the sector’s pivotal role in the nation’s economic landscape, he affirmed the government’s unwavering dedication to exploring avenues for economic diversification while simultaneously optimizing the revenue potential of the oil and gas industry.

“For this reason, we are pushing policies to attract investment in the oil and gas sector. Recently, I signed an executive order to unlock about $10 billion in fresh investments in the sector. This will happen through Fiscal Incentives for Non-Associated Gas (NAG), Midstream and Deepwater Oil & Gas Developments. Just last week, the Federal Government of Nigeria signed the Consolidated Guidelines for Implementing Fiscal Incentives for the Oil & Gas Sector.

“The guidelines, which represent a cornerstone of the Presidential Directive, aim to enhance the Nigerian oil and gas sector’s global competitiveness while stimulating economic growth.

Tinubu Opens Reps Retreat on Economic, Tax Reforms

“The Executive Order also streamlines contracting processes, procedures, and timelines from 36 months to 6 months. The order also seeks to ensure that local content requirements are implemented without impeding investments or the cost competitiveness of oil and gas projects,” he said.

President Tinubu added that the government has also embarked on tax reforms “to limit the taxes collected without negatively affecting government revenues.  All of these have the same objective – to reduce government interference with the commercial imperatives of businesses in the country so that businesses based here can be competitive and focus on their core objectives of economic growth through innovation and trade.”

Earlier, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said the 10th House is ready to support the economic policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration.

Abbas stated that the country’s collection of Value Added “is the lowest among its African peers, indicating significant inefficiencies in its tax system.”

He stated that the parliament would engage with stakeholders on laws governing finance, tax, and oil sub-sectors of the economy, with the aim of reforming the tax system.

According to him, “As a critical arm of government, the legislature has a crucial role in shaping our nation’s economic transformation and development. Part of our law-making powers is the authority to enact tax reforms and strengthen resource governance mechanisms.

“By designing and implementing progressive tax policies, we strive to ensure a fair and efficient tax system that boosts revenue while fostering economic growth and equity. This involves not only broadening the tax base and simplifying tax codes but also enhancing compliance and minimising loopholes that benefit only the wealthy.

“Furthermore, the legislature’s oversight function is central in the governance of natural and financial resources. It ensures transparency and accountability in the exploitation and management of resources, which is essential for sustainable development. By holding government and private sectors accountable, the legislature helps prevent the mismanagement and corruption that can often undermine economic progress.”

The speaker noted that the retreat is aimed at fostering stakeholders’ engagement, ensuring constructive dialogue and insights on legislative strategies that will contribute to the economic transformation of our country.

“Accordingly, this forum allows us to take a deep dive into the tax reforms instituted by President Tinubu and undertake a review of the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (2021). We consider these two initiatives vital in our nation’s quest for economic recovery, transformation and growth. The two areas speak to both the oil and non-oil sectors of the Nigerian economy,” he said.
