Managing Allergies and Its Complications

0

Allergy occurs when a person reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless to most people. These substances are known as allergens and are found in dust mites, pets, pollen, insects, ticks, mold, foods and some medications. Allergy symptoms range from mild to life-threatening

An allergic reaction begins when an allergen enters the body, triggering an antibody response

Histamine is said to be released by the immune system in response to substances that it believe to pose a threat, which causes allergy symptoms including sneezing, itching, red eyes, coughing, a runny nose, shortness of breath, or swelling.

Understanding these triggers and seeking medical advice can help manage and improve the quality of life for individuals with allergies.

A steady increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases globally has occurred with about 30-40% of the world population now being affected by one or more allergic conditions.

Australia is known to be the allergy capital in the world, with the UK following as a close second. In Australia, food allergies are seen in 10% of infants, 4-8% of children and around 2% of adults

In Nigeria, according to Accuweather, dust from inside your home and the outdoors can contain pet hair and dander, mold spores, and dust mites, which can all trigger allergy symptoms. As a result, you may suffer from a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing.

Symptoms of allergies may include, sneezing, wheezing, sinus pain, runny nose, coughing, nettle rash / hives, swelling, itchy eyes, ears, lips throat and mouth, shortness of breath, sickness, vomiting & diarrhea, increase in nasal and airway secretions

The most common causes of allergies are, pollen from trees and grasses, proteins secreted from house dust mites, pets, such as cats and dogs, and other furry or hairy animals (guinea pigs, horses etc.), insects like bees and wasps, mold. Foods such as peanuts, milk, eggs, tree nut as well as medicines

‘Oppenheimer’ Wins Top Screen Actors Guild Prize

0

Oppenheimer took top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, as Hollywood stars partied at their union’s first prize-giving gala since staging its longest-ever strike last year.

The prestigious prize for best performance by a cast at the SAG Awards is historically a strong predictor for the Oscars and makes Oppenheimer a formidable frontrunner for best picture.

Christopher Nolan’s epic drama about the father of the atomic bomb also took the awards for best actor for Cillian Murphy, who plays the titular scientist, and best-supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr, portraying his bitter rival.

Oppenheimer has been relentlessly scooping up awards all season.

The movie has already won top prizes at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Directors Guild of America Awards, and Britain’s BAFTAs.

It now adds the top SAG-AFTRA award for best cast, which has led to recent best picture Oscar wins for movies such as Parasite, CODA and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Many of the same actors who vote for the SAG Awards also make up the largest voting bloc for the Academy Awards, which will be held this year on March 10.

Oppenheimer saw off Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, American Fiction and The Color Purple for top honors.

In the best actress category, Lily Gladstone (“Killers”) bested her main rival Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) in a closely watched result that throws the Oscars race wide open.

The Indigenous actress, who portrays an Osage woman being exploited by nefarious white neighbours in Martin Scorsese’s 1920s-set epic, began and ended her acceptance speech in her native Blackfeet language.

Supporting actress prizes have been going consistently this season to Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), and Saturday’s gala was no different.

And Barbra Streisand received a lifetime achievement award, earning a rapturous standing ovation in a rare public appearance for the 81-year-old.

The mood at the gala was celebratory all around, as members of SAG-AFTRA — the union that represents some 120,000 performers, including A-list stars — congregated in numbers for the first time since the strike ended in November.

Kenneth Branagh who picked up the award on behalf of everyone on Oppenheimer recalled how the film’s cast had walked out of their London premiere last July as the work stoppage was about to begin.

“We went from the red carpet and we didn’t see the film that night. We happily went in the direction of solidarity with your good selves.

“So this, this is a full circle moment for us,” he said, to loud applause.

The guild ultimately extracted hard-fought gains including better pay and protections against artificial intelligence (AI) from studios including Disney and Netflix.

”I am immensely grateful to our fans across the African continent for the love and support we got unconditionally.”.

”Indeed, while it is the beginning of greater exploits from every individual member of the team, like every good thing that must have a terminal point, it is the end of the road for THE JOHNSONS.”

The announcement of the show’s cancellation comes almost two years after the death of Ada Ameh at 48 where she had played Mrs. Johnson, wife to Mr. Johnson.

After Ameh’s death, fans and critics alike agreed that an integral essence of the series had been lost, leading to an outpouring of tributes.

The Johnsons also had a cast array of Kunle Bamtefa,  Chinedu Ikedieze among others.

Malia Obama Makes Directorial Debut With ‘The Heart’

Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former US President Barack Obama, showcased her directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival, while seemingly opting to use a stage name to distance herself from her father.

In the 18-minute short film ‘The Heart’, Malia is credited with writing and directing under the name Malia Ann, conspicuously omitting her well-known surname.

According to the film’s description, it tells the story of a lonely man grieving the death of his mother “after an argument about groceries and an odd request in her will”.

After his presidency, Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama established Higher Ground Productions, which has since achieved acclaim with an Academy Award in 2020 for the ‘American Factory’ documentary.

According to Vanity Fair, Donald Glover’s production company, Gilga, helped produce ‘The Heart’.

Glover, who mentored Malia Obama, told GQ last April that he’d said to her: “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.”

Malia Obama has, in fact, been working in the industry since graduating from Harvard. She previously worked as a staff writer on Glover’s Amazon Prime series ‘Swarm’ and as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s ‘Extant’ series.

The reception on the film-review websites has been less than complimentary of the 25-year-old’s efforts with so many critics attributing her growth in the industry to the popularity of her parents and not her creativity.

N’Assembly Plans Budget Review Over Naira Fall

1

The Nigeria Senate says the National Assembly would need to revisit the approved N28.77tn 2024 budget.

The Red Chamber explained that there was a need to revisit the budget following the incessant fall of the naira against the United States dollar.

The National Assembly has passed a harmonised 2024 budget Appropriation Bill totalling N28.77tn which was eventually passed on January 1, by President Bola Tinubu.

The National Assembly increased the bill by a total of N1.2tn, moving the budget from N27.5tn to N28.7tn.

N’Assembly Raises Budget to N28.77tn, Passed Bill

The Senate also benchmarked the exchange rate at N800 per dollar, moving it from the initial N750 per dollar initially pegged by the Federal Government.

Proffering reasons for the increment, in December, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Solomon Adeola, explained, “The current price of the dollar at the black market is between N1200 and 1300, and in the Central Bank of Nigeria, it is between N950 and N1000 and we have a budget which was pegged at N750, if you look at the gap, you’d realise that has covered a lot of gaps already.

“Again, we did some external consultations, most especially in the area of oil benchmark and petroleum resources, if we had gone in that line, we’d have pegged it at N850/N900 to a dollar and we agree that we want to be conservative in our approach, so that nobody will think that we want to increase the budget for any ulterior motive, that was why we left it at N490bn out of which N44bn is for statutory transfer, so effectively, the increment is about N446bn that is going into the Federal Government pocket as consolidated revenue.”

In an exclusive interview on Sunday, Senator Adeola said certain actions need to be taken concerning the 2024 budget as the variables upon which the budget was built could no longer stand.

He said, “Yes, it is true that the budget was passed at N800 to a dollar but as we speak, it’s no longer visible as the dollar currently stood at N1450 to a naira.

“And I can tell you that there is a need for us to revisit the budget as the variables upon which the budget is predicated are no longer there. So all we need to do is just take our time and do some internal workings within the landing cost of petroleum product per litre of fuel.

“After this, we can now collaborate with the current budget that we have so that we can give NNPC what the actual figure for this landing cost will be, and then any savings arising from that can be planned upon for a supplementary budget or reallocation of some project within the budget,” he added.
