VP Shettima Promises 4 Months Steady Power Supply

0

The Nigerian Government has assured investors in the country of adequate power supply, especially in industrial clusters.

Vice President, Kashim Shettima, gave the assurance during a business roundtable held in Agbara, Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, South West Nigeria. He said the nation holds tremendous opportunities for not only investors but also the people.

The event was to launch an initiative to ensure dedicated power supply to industrial clusters across the nation, starting with Agbara Industrial Estate.

Shettima said that it is embarrassing that the Agbara Cluster relies on other sources of power supply aside from the national grid, adding that the Nigerian Government through the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) is committed to ensuring that clusters like Agbara benefit from a cheaper means of generating power in their various factories.

The Vice President, who is the Chairman of the Board of Directors, of NDPHC promised that the Agbara Industrial Estate will have a steady power supply in the next four months.

He said: “I am here to reassure the business community that we mean business. I want to give you my word and my word is my bond, if you need 200 Megawatts, 300 Megawatts, we can give it to you.

“Be rest assured we are going to supply your power needs with no strings attached. We are giving power to Togo, I think we are giving 100 Megawatts to Togo, and some of these nations are not even paying us. Why can’t we give to businesses that will pay us? It is just simple arithmetic; it is a matter of economics.”

The Vice President charged the staff of NDPHC to double their effort by ensuring the delivery of the Agbara Industrial Cluster power program in three to four months.

Shettima spoke of the commitment of President Tinubu to make power available to the entire nation.

Pres. Tinubu Vows Steady Power Supply

“It is all about advocacy, it is about people believing in you and I have the confidence of my boss, such that I can talk authoritatively. He is very passionate about the Nigerian project. He is very committed to repositioning this nation,” he said.

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun said that without electricity, all infrastructure provided for the use of the people of the state and the nation as a whole would be in vain.

Governor Abiodun said that his administration has established additional industrial clusters, saying that without stable and reliable power, all the initiatives would be in vain.

“We believe that such initiatives like this speak to ensuring the sustainability of competitive industrialisation and one must not but salute this initiative.

“We as a state have gone ahead besides this Agbara Cluster, we have five other clusters. We have one by the Interchange called Remo Cluster, we are creating a new one called the Magboro Cluster. We are creating our own Aerotropolis which is our special agro-processing zone, which will be the first of its kind in Nigeria. We also have the Ijebu-Ode cluster because we believe that it is through these clusters that we can jump-start socio-economic activity.

“These clusters, what do they seem to do, we provide the parcel of land, provide the needed infrastructure and this attracts industrial activities.

“But, without a doubt, without stable, reliable and clean power, all these initiatives will be in vain. So, to that extent, we are extremely excited,” he said.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu represented by his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat said ensuring adequate power supply in the nation is complex because of the attitudes of Nigerians.

Hamzat regretted that out of about 13,000 Megawatts available, Nigeria could only transmit 4,000 Megawatts.

“The issue of our power is complex and why it is complex is because of bad behaviour among all of us, the stakeholders, the distribution companies and the generating companies.

“For me, the biggest challenge that we see in Nigeria now is public commentary. We have a lot of people that go out there to just say things, demeaning our institutions and that is the biggest challenge.

“When the international community does surveys, they listen to your news and then you keep killing your nation. The truth of the matter is that Lagos and Ogun states are safer than New York. The possibility of being shot in New York is higher than being in Lagos.

Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu on his part said the event marked a pivotal moment in the collective endeavour to fortify one of the backbones of the industrial landscape of  Nigeria.

He noted that the project stands as the first of many projects in the federal government’s light-up initiative to deliver reliable electricity to industrial and heavy user clusters across the nation.

Adelabu stressed that Agbara is a cluster where dreams are forged, industries thrive and where opportunities are limitless, adding that the ambitious endeavour when completed will bolster the power supply within the industrial estate by ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted flow of electricity to meet the demands of the industries.

Earlier in his welcome address, the MD/CEO, of NDPHC, Chiedu Ugbo disclosed that the event signifies the commitment of the present administration through NDPHC to ensure consistent and reliable power supply to industrial concerns.

He noted that the company is the only government-owned company responsible for implementing the integrated power project of the government which aims to enhance electricity generation.

Ugbo said that the primary objective of the initiative was to ensure a consistent, reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity from power plants across Nigeria to the extensive industrial and business clusters in Agbara and across the nation.

He noted that NDPHC has successfully constructed about 8 power plants with a combined capacity of approximately 4,000 Megawatts.

Technology Development Agency Seeks Safer Cyberspace

The National Information Technology Development Agency has campaigned for a safer cyberspace as it plans for this year’s cybersecurity awareness month.

It said this in a statement on Monday by NITDA’s Head, Corporate Affairs and External Relations, Hadiza Umar.

The agency noted that it had trained 3,242 on basic and intermediate cyber security skills in partnership with CISCO.

It stated, “The Cybersecurity Awareness Month held every October, is a month set aside globally to educate and create cybersecurity awareness. This year marks the 20th in the series of collaborative awareness campaigns between public and private sector organisations globally.

NITDA Charges Startups To Solve Local Problems With Technologies

“To mark the 2023 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, NITDA has lined up series of programmes specifically focused on sensitising the general public on cybersecurity threats and steps necessary to protect ourselves in the ever-growing digital space.

“The theme for this year’s celebration is, ‘See Yourself in Cyber’, which highlights that cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. The main purpose of this awareness campaign is to encourage the adoption of safe cyber hygiene. To achieve this effectively, citizens need to accept, understand and be willing to apply these security measures to stay secure.”

It also noted that NITDA was partnering with key stakeholders to ensure grassroot awareness campaigns and sensitise the general public on these cyberthreats and how to protect themselves.

It was also disclosed that NITDA, alongside O-range Cybersecurity Training Service Limited, conducted cybersecurity training in Ilorin, Kwara State, where more than 5,000 youths from various states participated.

The statement added, “We, therefore, call on private and public sector organisations as well as the general public to join us in ensuring that the Nigerian cyberspace is safe and secure. Together, we can make the Nigerian cyberspace and the world at large safe and secure for all.”

Eye Health: Experts Commemorate World Sight Day 2023

68

World Sight Day is dedicated to raise public awareness of the importance of vision and eye health. It is observed on the second Thursday of every October. This year 2023, World Sight Day is celebrated on the 12th of October (Thursday).

This World Sight Day is aimed at educating individuals about the value of maintaining their eyesight at work and urging business leaders to give the eye health of employees worldwide top priority.

Visual impairments have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life in terms of its physical, emotional, social, and economic aspects. Nearly 220 billion people worldwide are visually handicapped, and 10 billion people have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is still untreated.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) estimate that 350 million eye injuries occur at work each year, and that over 1.3 million people worldwide have vision impairment connected to their jobs. 90% of incidents of blindness can be prevented or treated if they are discovered early. As a result, raising public awareness is essential for stopping and slowing the course of eye illnesses. In order to raise awareness about eye health, advocate for better eye care, and support actions to avoid blindness and vision loss, the World Sight Day was established.

The World Sight Day theme for 2023 is “Love your eyes at work,” a worldwide urge to all corporate leaders to prioritize their employees’ eye health and recognize the value of vision at work.

Oil Production Hits Highest Barrels/day in 2023

0

Nigeria’s crude oil output rose to an all-time high of 1.35 million barrels per day in September 2023, as the country pumped its highest volume of crude oil so far since this year.

Latest figures obtained from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, on Wednesday, showed that the country’s output in September was about 14 per cent higher than what it pumped in the preceding month of August 2023.

Data from the commission indicated that in September, Nigeria’s crude oil production (excluding condensates) was precisely 1,346,562 barrels per day, which was a 165,429bpd increase when compared to the 1,181,133bpd produced in August this year.

Further analysis of figures obtained from the NUPRC indicated that in January, February and March, the country’s oil outputs were 1,266,659bpd; 1,292,240bpd; and 1,266,737bpd respectively.

In the months of April, May, June and July, Nigeria produced 1,004,392bpd; 1,189,332bpd; 1,260,928bpd; and 1,089,089bpd respectively.

The above crude oil production figures therefore showed that Nigeria’s oil production in September was the highest output so far recorded by the country this year.

The Federal Government has been making concerted efforts to shore-up the country’s oil production, which is far below the about 1.8 million barrels per day quota approved for Nigeria by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

In another development, the NUPRC said it was very optimistic that Exxon Mobil’s asset sale to Seplat Energy could move forward.

NUPRC’s Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, disclosed this to Reuters on Wednesday on the sidelines of Africa Oil Week in Cape Town.

The regulator last year refused to approve the $1.28bn sale, a deal some in the industry say was key to getting much-needed investment into Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

“We are very optimistic that parties to the transaction will go back, look at the position of the regulator and come back by abiding by the provisions of Nigerian laws and the right thing will be done,” Komolafe stated.

Rising Costs Pose Threat To Manufacturers- MAN

0

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has said that the unrelenting increase in production costs is posing a serious threat to the existence of the manufacturing sector.

The president of MAN, Francis Meshioye made this disclosure in a statement on Wednesday, during the association’s pre-Annual General Meeting press conference held in Lagos.

The association’s 51st AGM, set to hold in Lagos is themed, “Setting the Agenda for Competitive Manufacturing Under the AfCFTA: What Nigeria Needs to do.”

Meshioye, while addressing the press conference said the theme was couched with a deep reflection over the growth trajectory of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria and Africa.

Manufacturers say positive GDP growth masks sector’s true health

Meshioye said, “Currently, the cost of manufacturing is daily rising owing to scarce and unavailable manufacturing inputs that continue to shrink profitability and threaten the existence of the critical sector of the economy.

“More worrisome is the fact that the sector that should propel job creation, productivity, and economic growth is enmeshed with a series of challenges that constantly limit its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product.”

Speaking further, Meshioye noted that such challenges as epileptic power supply, insecurity, inadequate infrastructure, shortage of forex and naira depreciation are prevailing issues that are impacting negatively on the sector.

He added that such challenges as epileptic power supply, insecurity, inadequate infrastructure, shortage of forex and naira depreciation are prevailing issues that are impacting negatively on the sector.

“The AfCFTA window should be maximised in such a way that products manufactured in Nigeria would be the preferred in terms of quality and pricing,” he said

According to him, the three-day event, which would feature an exhibition of Made-in-Nigeria products, would have Nigeria’s former Minister of Trade and Industry, Olusegun Aganga as a guest lecturer.

“Our goal is to brainstorm at the AGM, dwelling on the theme for the purpose of suggesting a policy direction for the new Government. Our distinguished Guest Speaker is a friend of the house and one who has a vast understanding of the sector and also the subject of discourse,” Meshioye added.

American Investors Eye Opportunities In Nigeria

0

Some investors from the United States of America have expressed optimism about the investment opportunities that are in Nigeria.

The investors, who are part of the USAID-sponsored American Institutional Investor Reverse Roadshow, spoke at a reception hosted by the Consul General of the United States of America in Nigeria, Will Stevens, at his residence on Tuesday.

USAID, in partnership with the US government’s Prosper Africa, and Power Africa initiatives, hosted the roadshow to expose American investors to investment opportunities and the investment ecosystem in Nigeria.

The delegation was made up of 12 executives from leading US pension funds and financial service providers, managing over $1tn in assets. While their focus is on infrastructure, they are looking at other sectors of the Nigerian economy.

In his welcome address, the US CG said, “This trip is one of the four pillars of Prosper Africa, the concept that promotes bilateral trade and bilateral investment. A lot of people look at the US government efforts and efforts of diplomatic missions and think, ‘Well, you’re really all about helping American companies,’ which we do. We are happy to help American companies sell their products here and we are also happy to help Nigerians who want to invest in the United States, but with the concept of Prosper Africa, we are also focused on promoting Nigerian trade to the United States.

The fourth pillar is promoting US investment into Nigeria which includes our companies and institutional investors. There is one thing I hear from the companies and business leaders I speak with and it is, you want more investment.  I’m confident that this delegation will lead to more investment. That investment will hopefully promote economic growth and employment and be broad-based.

Beyond promoting investment, this trip is about building enduring trading investments.”

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, capital importation from the US was the highest in the second quarter of 2023 at $271.92m, marking 26.39 per cent of total capital importation followed by Singapore and the Republic of South Africa with $177.44m (17.22 per cent) and $136.95m (13.29 per cent) respectively.

In his comments, the Deputy Executive Director for the New York City Board of Education Retirement System, Daniel Miller, said, “My hope is that when you return home to the US, you will carry with you fresh perspectives on African investment. Speaking from my experience, this trip has been nothing but transformative.  Since my first trip in 2019, we have allocated millions of dollars to Africa, a significant part of it is invested right here in Nigeria. I can assure you, this is just the beginning.”

One of the investors, Mark Feasel, who is the chief commercial officer of Fuelcell Energy speaking to The PUNCH said, “There are amazing companies in Nigeria. I have been in Nigeria since Sunday and I have been in seven places including Alaro City. I don’t mess around, there is entrepreneurship in this country and so, I want to partner. I want to bring US technology that we can surround with local expertise in Nigeria, create jobs and so on.”

FG Asked To Remove Fees on Locally Refined Diesel

0

Operators of modular refineries in Nigeria, on Wednesday, called on the Federal Government to remove many fees attached to locally refined Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, in order to help reduce the ballooning cost of the commodity.

Diesel prices have been on the rise in the past few months, crippling economic activities in various sectors, particularly in the downstream oil industry where the situation has stalled the operations of many filling stations.

Oil marketers had repeatedly stated that the high cost of diesel made it difficult for them to move products from tank farms in the South to filling stations in the North, without increasing the price of the transported products.

FG Warns Fuel Stations Operators Against Pump Alteration

To help reduce the cost of diesel, particularly the ones produced domestically by modular refineries, operators of the facilities on Wednesday said the Federal Government should remove the many fees being charged on the commodity.

They made the call under the aegis of the Crude Oil Refinery-Owners Association of Nigeria, during a courtesy call on the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, at his office in Abuja.

This came as queues for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, grew worse in the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring Nasarawa and Niger states, as many independent retail stations were shut down due to lack of products to dispense.

Speaking at the meeting with the petroleum minister, the President, CORAN, Momoh Oyarekhua, said, “As at today, for every litre of AGO (diesel) or DPK (kerosene) you sell into the market, those fees cumulate into about N9.80, which invariably increases the price of that product into the market.”
