Smiling Coco Gauff Romps Into Us Open Semi-Finals

0

Coco Guaff said learning how to smile more often is behind her dazzling run at the US Open after she stormed into the semi-finals with a straight sets thrashing of Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old sixth seed became the first American teenager to reach the last four of the US Open since Serena Williams in 2001 after demolishing Latvia’s Ostapenko 6-0, 6-2 in just 1hr 8min.

It was another polished performance that suggested Gauff is finally ready to land a breakthrough Grand Slam title, four years after she announced herself to the world with a magical run to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019.

Gauff’s season has been transformed since she began working with veteran coach Brad Gilbert in July, weeks after she was left distraught by a first-round exit at Wimbledon.

Since Gilbert’s arrival, Gauff has won titles in Washington and Cincinnati, where she also defeated outgoing world number one Iga Swiatek for the first time.

Gauff says one of the biggest changes Gilbert has made is to her mindset.

“I thought to play and win you have to be ultra serious and ultra focused, which is true, but also you still have to enjoy it,” Gauff said after Tuesday’s win.

“Honestly, the first meeting that I had with Brad before he started coaching with me, one of the first things he said is ‘You need to smile more’. It wasn’t really anything with my game or anything.

“I really took that, and when he said that I was a little bit surprised. I started to think and I was like, ‘Yeah, I do.’ That’s something I’m trying to work on and continuing to do, and obviously I think it’s helping my results.”

Gauff meanwhile says she is flattered by comparisons to Serena Williams after matching the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s feat in reaching the US Open last four as a teenager.

“I mean, being in any sentence with her is great. She’s the greatest player of all time,” she said. “I’m nothing close to that yet. I’m just really honored to be in the same sentence as her.”

“She’s my idol. I think if you told me when I was younger that I would be in these same stat lines as her, I would freak out.”

Gauff will face either Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova or Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the last four on Thursday.

– ‘Crazy’ scheduling –

Coco Gauff sprints to reach a return during her quarter-final defeat of Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday

On Tuesday’s evidence, Gauff will head into the last four brimming with confidence after producing a superb display to overwhelm Ostapenko.

Ostapenko had produced the shock of the tournament in the last 16 on Sunday, ousting world number one and reigning women’s champion Iga Swiatek in three sets.

But amid furnace-like heat on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the inconsistent Latvian wilted in the face of a scorching performance from her American opponent.

Former French Open champion Ostapenko hit out at US Open scheduling after her defeat, stating she had not been given enough time to recover properly following her gruelling late-night victory over Swiatek on Sunday.

“I think it’s really hard to recover from those night matches, because after beating world No.1, I went to sleep at 5 a.m.,” Ostapenko said.

“You sleep for maybe like seven, eight hours, but you don’t completely recover.

“I think it’s a little bit crazy.”

Gauff broke Ostapenko’s serve three times in a lopsided first set which was over in 20 minutes, with the Latvian coughing 15 unforced errors to Gauff’s two.

Ostapenko was soon in trouble in the second set, suffering a service break in the opening game when Gauff’s sublime drop shot left the Latvian scrambling to the net.

However Ostapenko finally got on the board with a break of serve in the next game only to surrender that momentum in the next game when Gauff broke her for the fifth time for a 2-1 lead.

The next three games went with serve before Gauff turned the screw to break for a 5-2 lead that left the teenager serving for the match.

Although Ostapenko defiantly saved two match points, Gauff clinched victory with a forehand winner.

NFF Didn’t Sack Me – Waldrum

0

Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum said he was bemused by stories making the rounds in the media that he had been sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation, noting that his contract with the country is still running

Waldrum was appointed by the NFF in 2020 and led the Super Falcons to the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco as well as the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

“I’m seeing reports that I’ve been sacked but my contract doesn’t end until October 31,” Waldrum said.

With the NFF yet to decide on his extension, the American is still in line to be in the dugout when the Super Falcons face Ethiopia in a Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers between October 23-31.

Currently in the final phase of his contract, the American is still waiting to get a clear picture of a possible extension with the NFF while he has expressed his desire to lead the Falcons to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Many fans also backed him to keep his job despite his soured relationship with his employers before the World Cup.

The NFF has said its technical committee will make a decision on the coach’s future soon.

Waldrum led the Falcons to a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco, which had his credentials questioned but he won the hearts of Nigerians again after leading the team to the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

INEC Approves PVC Collection For Four Weeks

0

Ahead of the November 11, 2023 off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the resumption of collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for four weeks.

The electoral umpire said within the said period, registered voters who could not collect their PVCs before the suspension of the exercise on February 5, 2023 before the last general elections would be able to get their cards.

“The Commission has earmarked week days (Monday – Friday) from 9.00am to 3.00pm for the collection of PVCs for a period of four weeks from 11th September to 9th October 2023,” INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The PVCs will be available for collection at all our Local Government area offices in the three States: eight in Bayelsa, 27 in Imo and 21 in Kogi.

“In addition, the Commission has created other designated centres with large number of uncollected PVCs. The details of all centres will be made available by the Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) in the three states.

The Commission also redeployed two RECs to other states. The REC for Edo State, Obo Effanga, takes over in Bayelsa for the forthcoming off-cycle governorship poll, while Ayobami Salami moves to Lagos from Ekiti State. “The two States are among those without RECs following the end of tenure of the last holders of the offices,” INEC said.

The electoral umpire enjoined political parties and candidates to conduct themselves peacefully and to avoid utterances and actions capable of causing a breach of peace in their ongoing campaigns.

Dele Momodu would have fired Wike from PDP if

0

The Director of Strategic Communications for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Momodu, has expressed his desire to expel the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, from the People’s Democratic Party if given the authority.

Despite his desire to sack Wike from the PDP, Momodu did not object to Wike’s ministerial appointment by President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Momodu said this while speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Political Paradigm’ programme aired on Tuesday (today).

“I don’t have the power, if I had the power, I would have fired him (Wike) long ago,” Momodu said.

Wike had challenged his party, the PDP, daring them to take action against him through suspension or disciplinary measures.

Wike had challenged his party, the PDP, daring them to take action against him through suspension or disciplinary measures.

The former Rivers State governor asserted that he had yet to encounter a party leader who possessed the authority to suspend or expel him from the PDP.

He also claimed to be working for President Bola Tinubu and not the All Progressives Congress.

When questioned about his rationale for wanting to expel Wike from the party, Momodu responded, “Such an unruly person who wants to destroy our party? One individual cannot hold everybody to ransom. If we fought the military, Tinubu was part of those who fought the military in this country, and then, you will now allow a civilian dictatorship?”

Prior to the 2023 elections, Wike and four other former governors, collectively known as the G-5 within the PDP, withdrew their support for the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, due to disagreements over power-sharing within the PDP.

Goodluck Jonathan faults Founding Father’s inability to build the nation

0

Ex- President Goodluck Jonathan has said while Nigeria’s founding fathers deserve credit for the struggle for independence and victory which followed, they should share in the blame for doing a poor job at nation building subsequently.

Jonathan said this in his remarks during a national dialogue and public presentation of 21 books, held in honour of Prof. Udenta Udenta, as part of activities to mark his 60th birthday, in Abuja, on Tuesday. Skip Ad

The former Nigerian leader, who served as chairman of the occasion, likened the celebrant who authored all of the 21 books to former Tanzanain president, Julius Nyerere, whom he said championed Tanzanaian nationhood.

He said unlike Nyerere; Nigerian founding fathers paid greater emphasis on ethnic and identity politics at the expense of building Nigeria into a cohesive nation.

Jonathan said, “Have we been able to convince ourselves whether we are a state or a nation? If we are a country and a state, how do we become a nation?

“I am not blaming our founding fathers but they failed to integrate us into a proper nation. They operated as individuals and so on.

“Of course, if you have read some of the comments of our former leaders, someone like (Obafemi) Awolowo made it very clear that there was no nation called Nigeria. That it is a geographical entity, it is a country, it is a state, it has laws but there is no nation.

“The country was so polarized especially during the early political party formation and the parties were regional parties.

“There was no sense of commitment to integrate Nigeria into an entity that you can say yes, this is a nation with core values, common philosophy and people will be patriotic to that nation.

“Most of the parties that time belonged to regions and there were no alliances for the purpose of ruling the country.

“When I compare Nigeria and a country like Tanzania, I feel that Julius Nyerere made his vision clear to make Tanzania a nation. They have different tribes, maybe not as many as Nigeria but one nation was at the height of his thoughts.”

The Nigerian President explained that like Nigeria, Tanzania is made up predominantly of Muslims and Chirstians.

He further stated that in spite of the numerical strength and popularity of the two faiths,  President Nyerere was able to champion a one party state to prevent political parties dissolving into their ethnic and religious cocoons as he worked hard with other nationalists to build Tanzania into the nation is has become.

Jonathan said, “He (Nyerere) made sure that every person from Tanzania speaks that (one) language, those who go to primary, secondary and tertiary schools quickly adhered to this as Nyerere made education compulsory.

“So, you hardly see somebody who didn’t get at least basic knowledge of the language in what we call the first nine years of school education. At that level, you communicate in Swahili.”

Ex-President Jonathan recalled that his modest attempt at nation building was the driving force behind the 2014 national conference which was designed to addressed some of the fault lines that have kept Nigerians apart.

He expressed confidence that if the recommendations of the 2014 conference were not only adopted but implemented, “We will not say we have a country called Nigeria, we will not say we have a state called Nigeria, we will also say we have a nation called Nigeria.”

Former Ministet of Solid Minerals and Ex-Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, a Cheiftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, in his remarks confessed that although President Jonathan was right in his attempt to remove fuel subsidies, the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, which he (Fayemi) was part of mobilised Nigerians against it for political reasons.

He said the ‘Occupy Nigeria’ protest which grounded the country was part of strategies employed by the opposition to make the ruling PDP unpopular. He describe the antics of the opposition then as part of  politics.

Fayemi said, “Today, I read former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s interview saying our liberal democracy is not working and we need to revisit it. And I agree with him that we must move to a political alternative. I think we are almost at a dead end.

“What we need is alternative politics and my own notion of alternative politics is that you can’t have 35 per cent of the vote and take 100 per cent of the spoil. It won’t work.

“We must look at proportional representation so that the party that is said to have  21 per cent of the vote will have 21 per cent representation in government. Adversaries politics bring division and enmity.

“All political parties in the country agreed and even put in their manifestos that subsidy must be removed. We all said subsidy must be removed. But we in ACN at the time in 2012, we knew it was all politics.

“That is why we must ensure that everybody is a crucial stakeholder by stopping all these. Put the  manifesto of PDP, APC, Labour Party on the table and select all those who will pilot the programme from all parties.”

Nigerians will recall that on January 1, 2012, then President Goodluck Jonathan announced the removal of fuel subsidy.

This action led to the adjustment of the pump price of petrol from N65 per litre to N141 the decision sparked mass protests across Nigeria with the economy taking a hit. The administration was literally forced to recind the decision by replacing subsidies and reducing the pump price.

Fayemi equally faulted what he described as Nigeria’ politics of the winner-takes-all. He suggested that all political parties should

be made to place their manifestos on the table for a consensus to be built while an all inclusive system should be built in such a way that parties will find a place in government at the end of elections depending on their performance at the polls.

He equally credited the Jonathan administration for making giant strides in developing Nigeria’s economy. According to him, the last time Nigeria enjoyed economic growth was during his administration.

Also speaking during the event, former Minister of Aviation and a chieftain of the PDP, Osita Chidoka, said as the nation awaits the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court on Wednesday, parties should prepare to accept the outcome.

Specifically, the PDP Cheiftain advised President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to be prepared to relocate to Lagos and prepare for the 2027 general elections if he loses at the court.

Chidoka said, “If the court says Tinubu is no longer the President, he should pack his things and go to Lagos and prepare for the next election. If they say he is the president, we will continue our agitation for the reform of the electoral management system.”

Tinubu invited to join G-20 invitation

0

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, has admitted that President Bola Tinubu has received an invitation to join the G-20 and currently considering the membership benefits of the gathering of the world’s largest economies.

This was even as the presidential spokesman debunked viral reports making the round on social media and online platforms that Nigeria has already joined the G-20 and BRICS, another group of major emerging economies that comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Ngelale made the rebuttal when he featured on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ yesterday. His statement is coming in the wake of a report that the president will jet out of Nigeria on Monday night to attend the G-20 summit in New Delhi, India.

He said: “There are very wide and extensive consultations taking place within the government. We are assessing both the risks and benefits of becoming a G-20 member. We stand very confident that if our government takes a conscientious view that we should apply to become a member of the G-20, we have an excellent chance of being accepted.Skip Ad

“We have not applied to BRICS contrary to speculations out there. We have made no application to BRICs or the G-20 as of today. Our consideration is based on empirical analysis. It’s not based on sentiment or emotion. It’s about whether or not it will serve the national interest in the national economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That is the assessment we’re making now.

“We’re still studying it. It is noteworthy that we are being invited with a special invitation by the host nation, India, to be part of this.

But look, we want to be clear with our people that this is not just about theatrics, or some cosmetic view of geopolitics. This is about a black-and-white pursuit of the interest of investment to ensure that we can put our people to work in the country.”
