Presidential Poll:  Tinubu, Atiku, Obi’s fate depends on

0

After five months of legal fisticuffs, the Presidential Election Petition Court (Tribunal) will decide the fate of President Bola Tinubu, former vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, tomorrow.

The trio was the leading presidential candidates in the February 25, 2023 presidential poll. While Tinubu, who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC; Atiku contested on the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; and Obi flew the flag of the Labour Party, LP.

Atiku, Obi, PDP and LP separately want the court to nullify Tinubu’s election, award the victory to Atiku or Obi, and disqualify Tinubu.

There is also a third petition lodged against President Tinubu by the Allied Peoples Movement, APM.

Specifically, APM contended that the withdrawal of Mr. Masari, who was initially nominated as the Vice-Presidential candidate of the APC, invalidated Tinubu’s candidacy in view of Section 131(c) and 142 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Countering the petitioners, Tinubu, APC, and INEC urged the court to dismiss the petitions of the petitioners and affirm Tinubu’s election.

7 options before the court

Affirm Tinubu’s election on the ground that infractions observed during the polls were not enough to invalidate the outcome

Disqualify Tinubu, nullify his election and declare Atiku winner

Annul Tinubu’s election and declare Obi winner

Cancel the elections and order a fresh poll among the 18 candidates

Cancel the elections and order a re-run between the best two

Order a re-run between Tinubu and Atiku

Order a re-run between Atiku and Obi

The five justices who’ll decide Tinubu’s, Atiku’s, Obi’s fate

The four men and one woman, who will take one of the above options are:

Justice Haruna Tsammani, Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal and head of the panel; Justice Stephen Adah, Court of Appeal (Asaba division); Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf, Court of Appeal (Asaba Division); Justice Moses Ugo, Kano division; and Justice Abba Mohammed, Ibadan Court of Appeal.

NURTW urges security agencies to curtail crisis in Abuja

0

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has called on the Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to decisively deal with anyone planning to cause disturbance in Abuja using the union’s name.

The call came in response to an alleged plan by the leadership of the Lagos State Park Management Committee to stage a violent protest in the nation’s capital. This protest is reportedly targeted against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) due to the ongoing crisis within the union.

According to Comrade Anthony Chukwudi Asogwa, the General Secretary of the Union, a reliable intelligence report suggests that the leaders of the Lagos State Park Management Committee are planning to mobilize thugs from Lagos to Abuja.

He explained that these individuals, disguised in the union’s uniform, are expected to cause chaos and terror in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).  In a statement, Asogwa stressed that such actions are not representative of the NURTW, a union committed to lawfulness and order.

He said, “Again, we want to notify the security agencies and the general public about the plot by some leaders of the Lagos State Park Management Committee to hire thugs from Lagos to stage a protest against the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) regarding the crisis in the union.

“We have reliable information that they are en route to Abuja with the intention of causing confusion and crisis in the city.

“Through this medium, we call upon the Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to take immediate action and deal decisively with anyone who plans to incite a crisis in the name of the union within the city.

*We want to make it clear that these individuals do not represent our union, and we have no association with such a protest. As law-abiding citizens, our members will not stoop so low as to create confusion and disrupt the maintenance of law and order.”

This development came after the national secretariat of the NURTW was violently seized by members of the Park Management Committee from the South West, an act that the Nigeria Labour Congress labeled as a coup against the democratically elected President of the union.

The NLC has since issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to intervene and restore order.

Presidential tribunal: Protect Ndigbo, security agents told

Ndigbo Lagos, a leading socio-cultural group representing the interests of Ndigbo residing in Lagos, is deeply concerned about the potential threats to the lives and properties of Ndigbo following the imminent judgement of the Presidential Election Tribunal. We hereby appeal to the security agencies to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of Ndigbo in the post-judgement period.

The recent tribunal proceedings have generated heightened tension and apprehension within Nigeria, most especially the Ndigbo community in Lagos. As a peace-loving and law-abiding community, we urge all members to accept the outcome of the tribunal in good faith and explore lawful means to seek redress if necessary. However, we cannot ignore the unfortunate history of targeting and victimization experienced by our community in the aftermath of such events.

The protection of lives and properties is the primary responsibility of the security agencies. We implore them to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding the lives and properties of every Nigerian citizen, especially Ndigbo, during this period of heightened vulnerability. We call on the relevant security agencies to deploy adequate personnel and resources to prevent any form of violence, intimidation, or harassment targeted at members of our community.

Ndigbo Lagos commends the efforts made so far by the security agencies in maintaining peace and order during the election period, even though more should have been done and ought to be done. We urge them to build upon their limited success and ensure an even more robust security presence across all regions with significant populations of Ndigbo, considering the long history of making us scapegoats in such situations. It is critical that every citizen, irrespective of their ethnic background, feels secure and protected within our great nation.

We also appeal to our fellow Nigerians, particularly political actors and supporters, to exercise restraint and embrace peaceful means of expressing their grievances or celebrating their victories, as prescribed by the law. We must collectively reject any form of violence or incitement that can further inflame tensions and endanger lives.

Finally, we call on leaders at all levels, community stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to join us in advocating for peace, unity, and justice. We must work together to foster an inclusive society that protects the rights and lives of all its citizens regardless of their ethnicity.a

Ndigbo Lagos will continue to partner with relevant stakeholders and cooperate with the security agencies to promote a peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians within Lagos State and beyond.

Strike: Kebbi Governor Receives State NLC Leadership

0

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has received the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Kebbi State Chapter, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Birninkebbi.

The governor ordered the immediate payment of annual leave grants to all categories of workers in the state.

He lamented that, as an insider, he knew that previous administrations used to pay seven to eight per cent to some categories of workers, while only a few got 10 per cent.

Idris assured the union that it would be given its fair share separately, for onward distribution to its members, advising, “I don’t want you to assume, but believe that this is your government.”

He reminded them that the present administration had already started projects that had a direct bearing on the lives of the common people, adding that work to give the state capital a befitting look, just like any other state capital in the country was on course.

The governor told the workers that his government was in talks with Innoson Motors on vehicle procurement for state transport services, to subsidise the cost of transportation in the state.

The NLC Chairman in Kebbi State, Murtala Usman, said they were in Government House to brief the governor on issues regarding the union’s nationwide strike.

He, however, confirmed that the state government had already engaged the union leadership in dialogue, saying, “We have been in discussion with the government delegation, under the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG).”

Usman stressed the need for the government to look into the possibility of reducing work days, arising from subsidy removal, and create other alternatives to ameliorate workers’ plights.

The labour leader commended the governor for initiating different developmental projects, to transform the state, and encouraged him to sustain the pace, for the common good of all.

Exploring Maloti-Drakensberg Park, Lesotho

2

The Maloti-Drakensberg Park is a combination of two other parks that create a mesmerizing place that is considered to be one of the most serene ones in Africa, it is located in the eastern part of the Kingdom of Lesotho and the eastern part of the Republic of South Africa.

Established as a park on 11 June 2001 when the Sehlabathebe National Park in Lesotho was linked with the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

The Maloti-Drakensberg is part of the major mountain ranges of southern Africa with dramatic scenery, high levels of biological endemism, and a concentration of rock art spanning 4,000 years, where the highest reaches of its escarpment feature sheer basalt cliffs, with ramparts of golden sandstone rising above high rolling grasslands, rocky gorges, and pristine steep-sided valleys.

The park supports a variety of wildlife that thrives in the unique montane and sub-alpine ecosystems, among which endangered species such as the Cape vulture and the bearded vulture can be found. Being one of Africa’s prime ecotourist destinations, Maloti-Drakensberg Park was inscribed in 2000 on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which made it even more popular than it was before.

The total area of 249,313 hectares (616,066 acres) is something that should be explored bit by bit because in recent years many tourists have been visiting this enormous park to do some interesting hiking, which would allow them to see the true wildside of the southern part of the African continent.

The highest point of the park standing at 3,482 m (11,424 ft) is Thabana Ntlenyana in Lesotho, which too is the highest point of the small kingdom, and means “Beautiful little mountain” in the Sesotho language.

The most common hiking route is the Grand Traverse of the Drakensberg which usually begins at Sentinel Car Park and finishes at the Bushman’s Neck Border Post, although the route between these points is not predefined and everyone can make their awesome hike.

Being a true wilderness experience, there are no official marked trails, facilities, or shops, and due to the long distance that needs to be covered, of at least 200 km (124 mi) in total, some people underestimate it and don’t complete their planned hiking activities.

All in all, a true African experience from Lesotho and South Africa, that should never be missed by hiking enthusiasts who would like to witness the different side of Africa, which is completely surprising for everyone who had set their minds that African landscapes look almost the same.

Storms From Typhoon Haikui Drench China’s Fujian Province

0

Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes and vehicles were swept away in floods as storms from now weakened Typhoon Haikui made landfall in China’s southeastern Fujian province early on Tuesday after battering Taiwan for the past two days.

About 114,400 people were moved from risky areas as the typhoon rolled in with a maximum wind speed of 20 metres (66 feet) per second.

Several areas in Fujian recorded more than 300 mm (1 foot) of rainfall in just over 24 hours. In Fuzhou city, two firefighters were missing after a fire truck carrying nine rescue workers was swept away by floodwaters during a mission, state media reported.

Furniture were seen bobbing up and down in the floodwaters. Vehicles were swept away in the currents and some cars stranded in waterlogged areas were completely submerged, social media posts showed. Schools in Fuzhou city as well as in Xiamen, Quanzhou and Putian were also shut.

Many flights were cancelled at two airports in Fuzhou and Quanzhou, tourist spots and parks were shut, and ports, coastal and river transportation was suspended, state media reported.

The typhoon lost strength and became a tropical storm after its landfall around 5 a.m. (2100 GMT Monday), the national forecaster reported. It was last reported to be moving over southern Guangdong province, and forecasters expect it to continue to weaken.

Haikui slammed into the province just after Typhoon Saola barrelled into southern Guangdong province over the weekend, killing at least one person and leaving a trail of destruction and flooding in many areas of nearby Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau. read more

Last month, northern and northeasten China saw heavy flooding caused by Typhoons Doksuri and Khanun which brought the capital Beijing its heaviest recorded rainfall in 140 years.

On Tuesday, the state broadcaster said the government would allocate 200 million yuan ($27.43 million) in disaster relief funds to support provinces hit by typhoons and floods.

Over the weekend, the finance ministry said it had earmarked 1 billion yuan as disaster relief funds for floods, droughts or crop pests, state media Xinhua said.

Spain Floods: Police Search For Three Missing People As Trains Resume

0

Police and rescue services searched on Tuesday for three people missing after devastating floods hit central Spain as trains to the south resumed after thousands of passengers were left stranded.

The torrential downpour that swept over large swathes of Spain on Sunday and Monday, caused by a so-called cut-off low phenomenon, left three people dead and wreaked havoc on transport infrastructure, shutting roads, subway lines and high-speed train connections. The heaviest damage was in the provinces of Toledo and Madrid in the country’s centre.

Local authorities, the army’s emergency response corps, firefighters and law enforcement officers were working to “guarantee the stability of a key pipeline in the system supplying water to more than 270,000 people in the south of Madrid and Toledo”, Environment Minister Teresa Ribera told reporters.

Ribera was speaking from the town of Aldea del Fresno, southwest of Madrid, which was devastated by the flooding of the Alberche River.

A middle-aged man went missing there with his son when their car was dragged into the overflowing river on Sunday night after an avalanche caused by a sudden rush. The minor was found alive after spending the night clinging to a tree he had climbed, but rescuers were still searching for his father, emergency services said.

The other two missing people, in Toledo province, were a 54-year-old woman whose vehicle was swept away while driving along a flooded road and an 83-year-old man who was dragged into the strong currents near his home, police said.

Railway infrastructure manager Adif said high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia had resumed on Monday morning after overnight repairs to damage caused by the storm.

The train connection between Madrid and Toledo, 70 kilometres (45 miles) south, remained closed.

Rail operator Renfe said that 50,000 passengers had changed their train tickets free of charge since Sunday morning.

Fragata Independencia: Brazilian Navy Warship Arrives Nigeria

0

A Brazilian Navy frigate F Liberal has arrived in Lagos with over 200 officers and men.

The F Liberal (F-43) is a Niterói-class frigate of the Brazilian Navy. She was the fourth ship of her class ordered by the Brazilian Navy, on September 20, 1970.

Liberal was launched on 7 February 1977 and was commissioned on 18 November 1978.

In 2021, the Brazilian Navy ship, Fragata INDEPENDENCIA, arrived in Nigeria for a maritime interdiction mission code named ‘ GUNEX’ in the Gulf of Guinea.

The Ambassador of Brazil in Nigeria, H. E. Ricardo Guerra de Araújo represented by the Consulate General of Brazil in Lagos, Francisco Carlos Soares Luz, told reporters at the time that the presence of the 42-year-old vessel, Independencia, in the country was to partner Nigerian Navy in a joint operation between Guinea, Cameroon, Cape Verde, to fight piracy in the gulf of guinea and other international crimes.

Luz said: “Fighting pirates in the Gulf of Guinea is very important because at the end, the activities of piracy will raise the cost of products for everyone, especially the landlocked countries. They will have to pay more for those things.

“Brazil and Nigeria share the Atlantic Ocean as a border. So having our border safe is important for everyone and I think no cost is too expensive to keep the Atlantic Ocean safe.”

FCT minister Pulls Down Structures Along Major Road In Abuja

0

FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, on Monday ordered the demolition of illegal structures at Kabusa junction in the Dutse district of Abuja.

Hours after Wike gave the order, the development control unit of the FCT Administration moved to flatten the area.

Mukhtar Galadima, director, department of development control, who led the operation, told journalists that the removal of the illegal structures was to sanitise the area.

Galadima explained that the poorly constructed structures have taken over the entire roundabout, negatively affecting the serene environment around the junction.

He added that the demolition was in line with directives from Wike that illegal structures, particularly shanties, should not be allowed in the city.

He also said that the areas taken over by the illegal structures were meant for an overhead bridge which would soon be constructed.

“The removal of the shanties is in continuation of our commitment to sanitize the city and make the environment healthy,” Galadima said.

“Kabusa is constituting an eye sore for people coming into the city because of the shanties that occupied most parts of the junction.

“The area is reserved for an inter-change and with time, there will be an overhead bridge that will connect ring road two and the outer southern expressway.

“We are starting from this point to Galadima roundabout. When we chase away illegal occupants in the area, we will come up with a plan that will accommodate all the traders in an organised manner,” he said.

Galadima insisted that illegal structures in the area must go down for genuine infrastructural development.
