Strike: Federal Govt., TUC Came To A Truce

0

PRESS RELEASE….

FG, TUC AGREE ON TWO WEEKS TO RESOLVE SOME LABOUR ISSUES

The Federal Government and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have agreed to give government two weeks to address some of the grievances of the Congress.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Solomon Lalong, disclosed this in Abuja at the end of a meeting with the leadership of Trade Union Congress, led by its President, Comrade Festus Osifo.
The meeting was convened by the Minister to resolve TUC’s and Nigeria Labour Congress’ differences with government and to avert the pending warning strike by organised labour.

According to Lalong, the issues for which a two-week timeline was set for their resolution include wage award for federal civil servants to cushion the effect of rising poverty among them, and tax exemption for a certain level of workers, both in the public and private sectors.

The other issues on the two-week timeline are to put structures in place to ensure effective implementation of the palliatives declared by the Federal Government for the states and the FCT, and to set out the modalities for accessing the N70 billion proposed for the funding of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), among others.

The Minister declared that after the two weeks, the meeting would reconvene for further discussions, and added that the parties understood that some of the issues were urgent, while some would require a long span of time to resolve.

According to Lalong, the parties also agreed that there would be no strike within this peace period of two weeks “while we are doing deliberations and also working towards realising some of these objectives.”

The President of the TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, stated that the two-week timeline was reasonable, as it would give government ample time to address the issues.
He disclosed that at the commencement of the meeting, the leadership of TUC was pushing for a one-week timeline for the resolution of issues in dispute, but had to reconsider after weighing governments constraints, stating, “We also need to be pragmatic.”

Osifo stated that their demands, as contained in a communique earlier issued by the Congress, include resolving the impasse between Lagos State Government and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), increasing the amount provided for palliative as the sum of N5billion allocated per state is inadequate to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians.

Earlier, in a press conference, the Minister had implored Nigeria Labour Congress to suspend its planned two-day warning strike scheduled for 5th and 6th September, as such action would be detrimental to the gains already recorded by government in securing a greater future for Nigerian workers and citizens.

He urged the leadership of NLC to give the government some time to address the issues raised holistically.

The Minister reassured Nigerian workers that government would never take them for granted nor fail to appreciate their support and understanding.

NANS Tackles DSS, To Storm UNILAG Tomorrow

0

The National Association of Nigerian Students has warned the Department of State Services not to try to deter students from exercising their rights to protest, saying this is a universally recognised human right.

The National Public Relations Officer of the union, Giwa Temitope, reacted to the statement made by DSS that some politicians were mobilizing student leaders for violent protest against the Federal Government over socioeconomic matters.

“Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic-based associations, youth, and disgruntled groups for the planned action,” the spokesperson for the security agency, Peter Afunanya stated on Monday.

Last week, a group, Student Solidarity Group Against Fee Hike, revealed that it would protest against fee hike at the University of Lagos on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Backing the move, the NANS PRO, in a statement said the student body would be storming UNILAG for the protest and urged the DSS not to infringe on the rights of students.

NANS said the failure of the UNILAG management to honour the agreement reached at the meeting with student leaders on August 2, “forced the student body to fix a date of action at the university for September 6 and the protest will hold till the management reverses the hike.

According to him, “Students are therefore enjoined to come out en masse and join the protest for the immediate reversal of fee at the University of Lagos.”

Giwa said, “It is quite embarrassing that the DSS has derailed to become the propaganda arm of the Federal Government, thereby, raising false alarms and even interfering in affairs that do not in any way relate to their line of profession.

“As an association, we maintain that we are not satisfied with how the Nigerian society is being run, most especially, as regards arbitrary fee increment across our tertiary institutions, with the University of Lagos being a model.”

“August was quite a beautiful month, we showcased beautiful movies like: Akudaya, Meg 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja, A Bag of Trouble, Blue Beetle, Mikolo, The Modern Woman, Retribution and Kesari.

Task Force, Tanker Drivers, Touts Clash At Mile 2

0

Following several distressing videos and reports of violence in the area, an unconfirmed number of persons were killed yesterday at Mile 2,  in a clash between the Lagos Task Force, tanker drivers, and touts.

A distress call from a stranded passerby, who explained that there was a fight on top of the Mile 2-Oshodi bridge and as a result, the bridge had been barricaded, blocking the access for passengers to the main road alerted reporters to the scene.

Although the actual cause of the fight is yet to be ascertained, at the time of the call, the eyewitness claimed that four persons were dead from gunshots.
The Lagos state police pro SP Benjamin Hundeyin reported via social media that “CP Idowu Owohunwa was on ground at Mile 2 to assess the situation. Total normalcy has been restored. Meanwhile, investigation into the killing of a driver has commenced.”

California African American Museum To Remain Closed Until October

0

The California African American Museum in Los Angeles said that it could not reopen for the time being due to heavy rains that struck the city earlier in August.

“As we survey and repair the damage to our building, we now know we must remain closed at least through October,” the museum wrote in a statement. “Public programs slated to happen at CAAM in September and October are postponed.”

No other major Los Angeles museums have been quite as severely impacted by Tropical Storm Hilary, which hit California on August 21. By some estimates, it was the first time that a tropical storm had made landfall in the region since 1939.

Although the storm’s damage was expected to much more severe—it was called a hurricane at first, and then was downgraded—it still brought around 5 inches of rain to some coastal areas and more than double that to ones in the mountains. There were no fatalities in California as a result of the storm.

A spokesperson for CAAM told the Los Angeles Times that “water intrusion occurred in some areas of our building.”

For much of the past year, the museum hasn’t been fully open to the public. It began shuttering its galleries in August to make way for a maintenance project that included a new HVAC system and a weatherproofed glass ceilings. CAAM only just reopened in its entirety August. It is still expected to unveil a new library and conference center.

Veteran Cape Town Gallery Southern Guild To Open First U.S. Branch In Los Angeles

Southern Guild, a Cape Town–based gallery known for nurturing superstars like Zanele Muholi, will open an outpost in the Melrose Hill section of Hollywood, steps from Sargent’s Daughters, James Fuentes, and David Zwirner, in 2024. The announcement comes a week after another Cape Town stalwart, Goodman Gallery, revealed plans for a New York space.

The expansion has been 16 years in the making, Southern Guild’s cofounders, the artist-turned-gallerists Trevyn and Julian McGowan, said in an interview.

At the time of the interview, the pair were in Los Angeles overseeing the construction of the new space, while also preparing for Southern Gallery’s debut at the Armory Show in New York. Neither McGowan seemed particularly daunted by the workload. Under their direction, Evan Raabe Architecture—the studio behind Hauser & Wirth’s LA branch and Christie’s Beverly Hills—is transforming a disused laundromat at 474 N Western Avenue into a 5,000-square-foot gallery.

It comprises three large-scale exhibition rooms, and while each room may host separate exhibitions, there’s no difference in size or designation. The layout mirrors the cofounders’ approach to dealing: no hierarchy within their wares, whether they be painting, ceramic, performance, or sconce.

Southern Guild opened in 2008 as the one of the few commercial spaces in South Africa dedicated to “collectible” craft and homeware made by artists from Africa, most of whom were not well-known beyond the continent. That was a shame, they said, because the work was unlike anything else on the international market—tactile and sculptural but also functional, with a form and feeling inextricable from the art traditions of South Africa, as well as its neighbors, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.

At the time, Cape Town was only 14 years post-apartheid. Art that celebrated the social idiosyncrasies suppressed during its rule was flourishing. Southern Guild wanted collectors, critics, and curators around the world to see its worth without having to travel to South Africa.

Northampton’s Royal And Derngate Theatre Closed After RAAC Found

0

A theatre has shut after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was discovered.

The Royal and Derngate in Northampton said all of its remaining September performances and events had been postponed.

The neighbouring Northampton Filmhouse will also be closed “temporarily”.

It comes after a school in the town became one of hundreds to postpone reopening for the new term after suspected RAAC was found.

RAAC is a lightweight form of concrete that was used in the construction of public buildings between the 1950s and 1970s. Experts believe much of the RAAC used in construction projects has exceeded its lifespan of 30 years and could collapse.

The Royal and Derngate published a list of events affected by the closure and said it would contact ticket holders.

In a statement, it said: “We ask for your patience during this time, and we will be reopening as soon as we can.”

The venue consists of two theatres, the Derngate auditorium, with a capacity of 1,500, and the Royal theatre which can hold 450.

Bank, Insurance, Electricity Workers Vow To Join NLC Warning Strike

0

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees has announced the withdrawal of services for Tuesday and Wednesday, saying its members will join the two-day nationwide warning strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC declared the strike to protest against the hardship in the country faced by the masses through the removal of fuel subsidy as announced by President Bola Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29.

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees in a circular said it took the decision to join the strike after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting during the weekend.

The circular signed by the union’s President, Comrade Abakpa Anthony and the General Secretary, Hahamuth Mohammed I. Sheikh, read,

“In line with the communique issued after the meeting of National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held on Thursday 31 August 2023 that all affiliates should direct all its members to commence two days’ withdrawal of services from Tuesday & Wednesday the 5 & 6 September 2023.
“The directive is imperative to get the needed attention of the government and warn it off its newfound love of meddling in the internal affairs of unions rather than address the punishing economic circumstances we find ourselves in.

Similarly, the National Union of Electricity Employees directed its members across the country to join the two-day nationwide warning strike.
A circular signed by the union’s President, Martin I. Uzoegwu and the Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, read,

“With reference to the communique from the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) dated 31st August, 2023 at which the state of the economy and the plight of common Nigerians caused by the various government anti-poor policies were extensively discussed as well as the intimidatory activities of the government especially at the state levels on the organized labour unions, we are:

“To commence a 2-day nationwide warning strike (withdrawal of services) on Tuesday & Wednesday the 5th & 6th of September, 2023 to demand the state vacate the illegally occupied trade union offices.

“To embark on a total and indefinite shutdown of the nation within 14 working days or 21 days from 1st September. 2023 until the Government takes steps to address the excruciating mass suffering and impoverishment being experienced around the country and other labour issues raised in the NLC communique.

“Given the above, all National, State, and Chapter executives are requested to start the mobilization of our members in total compliance with this directive in order to dissuade the government from its intimidatory activities toward the Unions as well as put measures in place to stop the deterioration of our economy and the masses sufferings.”
