Lagos Hospital Trains Doctors, Nurses in Endoscopy Use

0

The Amuwo Odofin Maternal and Child Centre in Lagos State, says it has begun to train its doctors and nurses to build their capacity for effective delivery of endoscopy services.

The Medical Director of AOMCC, Dr. Taiwo Adeiyi, in during an interview with the press, said endoscopy services in the facility would begin this year.

According to reports, endoscopy is a test where a long thin tube with a small camera is inserted and used to look inside the body.

The tube is passed through a natural opening such as the mouth, anus and vagina, to check organs including the stomach, womb cervix and small intestine.

According to Dr. Adeiyi, endoscopy services will be beneficial to gynaecology patients.

He said, “The world is moving toward laparoscopy or what is called minimal access surgery – a surgery you can do without cutting open the body, just a small incision is made and you gain access into the vital organs to carry out the surgery.”

He, however, urged individuals and corporate organisations within the Amuwo Odofin community to partner with the hospital to help overcome some of its challenges.

Spain reach Nations League final

0

Spain’s Joselu pounced with two minutes remaining to snatch a 2-1 win over Italy on Thursday and set up a Nations League final clash against Croatia.

Luis de la Fuente’s side shaded a tight battle in Enschede to progress to Sunday’s final, where Zlatko Dalic’s outfit are lying in wait after beating hosts the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Yeremy Pino sent La Roja ahead after three minutes but Ciro Immobile netted from the penalty spot to level and the game seemed destined for extra time before Joselu prodded home from point-blank range to win it.

The victory eases pressure on De la Fuente, who had been heavily criticized after March’s loss to Scotland, in what was only his second game in charge.

Joselu, who has three goals in three games under the new coach, who handed him his debut, managed to stay onside and convert after Rodri Hernandez’s effort was deflected into his path.

The poacher, 33, was relegated with Espanyol this season but netted 16 times in La Liga.

The Manchester City defender and his team-mate Rodri were playing after tasting Champions League success last Saturday, with the latter scoring the winning goal against Inter Milan in the final.

Mancini lined up with three at the back, giving veteran center-back Leonardo Bonucci a start despite his patchy season with Juventus.

Italy immediately paid the price, with captain Bonucci robbed on the edge of his own box under pressure from Gavi and Yeremy Pino, with the latter driving into the box and firing past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

However, the Azzurri quickly pulled themselves level, when Le Normand handled Nicolo Zaniolo’s effort.

Nigeria and Rwanda are in a neck-and-neck race for a final spot at the ongoing Kwibuka Women’s T20 tournament in Kigali as the round-robin stage of the competition comes to an end on Friday (today).

After four wins each, both countries currently have eight points on the leaderboard, six points behind leaders Uganda and either of the teams will join the Victoria Pearls in Saturday’s final when they play their last match of the round-robin today.

Nigeria however have a tougher route as they come up against the undefeated Uganda who had beaten them by five wickets on Monday, while Rwanda will play Botswana who also stunned Nigeria by 23 runs on Thursday.

The defeat against the least-ranked team in the tournament could cost the Female Yellow Greens unless they come up with a spirited performance against the Ugandans.

Nigeria won the toss of the game and elected to field first, but Botswana delivered an incredible batting which saw them post 114 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs. Nigeria couldn’t chase the score and had 91 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs to hand Botswana their first win of the tournament.

Bayern to Repay €245,000 for Breaking Minimum Wage Rules

0

Bayern Munich have been forced to repay around 200,000 euros ($216,560) for failing to meet minimum wage requirements over a five-year period, Bavarian customs authorities announced on Thursday.

The club must also pay approximately 45,000 euros ($48,700) in unpaid social security contributions.

The investigation found Bayern underpaid employees from 2016 to 2021.

The Munich customs office issued a statement on Thursday saying Bayern had employed workers, mostly in the club’s youth training centre, on limited-hours contracts, but “the actual level of employment was far higher.”

“The club did not pay the minimum wage at the youth training centre it operates,” the office said in a statement.

In a press release on Thursday, Bayern apologised for the incident, saying “it was never FC Bayern Munich’s intention to withhold employees from their legitimate wages.”

Bayern said it has cooperated fully with the investigation and has taken steps to ensure similar incidents cannot happen again.

“The club has cooperated with the process and the procedure is now closed,” Munich customs spokesman Thomas Meister told German news service SID, an AFP subsidiary.

With an annual turnover in excess of 650 million euros ($700 million), Bayern is the largest sports club in Germany and the third highest-earning football club in the world, after Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Bayern Munich’s men’s team won their 11th straight Bundesliga title in 2022-23, alongside their female counterparts, who have won two of the past three Frauen Bundesliga titles.

18,088 results uploaded by INEC for the presidential poll says witness for Obi

0

Eric Ofoedu, a mathematics professor, gave a witness statement yesterday in front of the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, in the case Labour Party, LP candidate Mr. Peter Obi filed to overturn President Bola Tinubu’s election victory. In his testimony, Prof. Ofoedu informed the court that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, uploaded over 18,088 result sheets for the presidential election that took place on February 25 that were obscured.

The don was the fourth witness to give testimony in the joint appeal Obi and his party filed to contest the results of the presidential election. The don identified himself to the court as being with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State. The Respondents stated that they will provide justifications for their concerns in their final written address. They had also objected to Prof. Ofoedu’s statement made under oath being admitted as an exhibit before the court.

In particular, Mr. Abubakar Mahmood, SAN, the attorney for INEC, informed the court that he received the witness’s statement soon before the proceedings began. In light of the new information, he claimed, he would be unable to adequately cross-examine the witness. Counsel for President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, as well as counsel for the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, backed his motion that the petitioners withdraw the respondent’s evidence.

Although the five-member panel, which was chaired by Justice Haruna Tsammani, did not permit the witness to testify and present the exhibits, it stated that it will decide the respondents’ objections before rendering a decision in the case. A report on the election’s data analysis, an inquiry of INEC’s outcomes viewing scores, and independent data analyses of the election results in the states of Rivers and Benue were among the documents the witness presented in evidence before the court.

Although the reports were accepted by the court and designated as exhibits PCG1–PVG3, the court also included as evidence blurred IReV polling unit results from 18,088 polling locations throughout the federation. The court granted permission for the respondents to question the witness today based on the parties’ agreement. The petitioners called their fifth witness, PW-5, Lumnie Edevbie, an employee of Arise News Television who had been summoned to provide a video exhibit, as soon as Prof. Ofoedu was excused from the witness stand.

The exhibit, which was on a flash drive, included a video of a speech Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, chairman of INEC, gave on January 17 at Chatham’s House in London. INEC Chairman Prof. Yakubu argued in a video clip shown in open court for the use of the IRev and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the conduct of the general elections, describing them as the commission’s largest archive and repository of election results. Even as it postponed further hearing on the petition until today, the court stated that it will also decide on the objections before rendering its final decision. Obi, who is claiming to have won the election, is asking the court, among other things, to throw out Tinubu’s victory and revoke the Certificate of Return that INEC had given him.

Finidi calls ex-internationals to join in building NPFL

Coach of Enyimba Football Club of Aba, Finidi George, has called on overseas-based retired Nigerian players to return home to use their experience in improving the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Speaking after leading the Peoples Elephant to win 2022/2023 NPFL abridged League, Finidi said the return of more ex-internationals to manage local teams will bring glamour to the competition and also boost home-based players’ technical ability on the ball.

The former Ajax of Holland and Calabar Rovers star said the NPFL has potential to become one of the top leagues in Africa if well-organized.

The Super Eagles’ former captain acknowledged that the NPFL has talented players that can transform the league to an enviable height given the right training.

“Nigerian coaches that are not engaged in any assignment abroad need to come home and handle teams in the local league because their contributions will help increase the NPFL’s standard,” he said.

Russia And Algeria Tighten Strategic Ties

0

President Vladimir Putin and his Algerian counterpart President Abdelmadjid Tebboune pledged to deepen their two countries’ strategic partnership as the Kremlin seeks to pivot Russia towards Asia and Africa.

Tebboune’s three-day state visit comes as Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine stretches into a second year.

Amid ruptured ties with the West, Putin is seeking to bolster relationships with countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

“We are really happy to receive our friend, the President of Algeria, Mr. Tebboune, in the Kremlin,” Putin said after talks.

“Algeria is a key partner for us in the Arab world and in Africa,” he said, adding Russia wanted to ramp up energy and military ties.

The two leaders signed a declaration on “deep strategic partnership”, among other agreements.

The Kremlin plans a new Africa summit in July in Russia’s second city of Saint Petersburg and Putin repeatedly stressed he hoped to see Tebboune there.

“We will be glad to see you in Saint Petersburg”, Putin told Tebboune in televised remarks. “Relations with Algeria are of particular importance for our country.”

Tebboune said that Western pressure on Algeria would not have any impact.

“Foreign countries may put pressure on us today but this will never affect our ties,” he told Putin.

Both stressed the Soviet Union’s robust support for Algeria during and after its fight for independence from France.

“Our ties never changed,” Tebboune said. “Algeria has always supported Russia, he said in translated remarks.

“We must maintain our independence,” Tebboune said, adding Russia has been providing his North African country with weapons to help it “maintain our independence in these difficult circumstances.”

Tebboune was due to visit France in June but the trip, initially planned for May, might reportedly be postponed again.

The French presidency said the two countries were discussing “a suitable date”.
