First Transhipment Cargoes Arrive $1.5bn Lekki Port In 2 Weeks

0

Nigeria’s quest to turning the Lekki Seaport into a transhipment hub is gathering momentum as the first vessels laden with transhipment and transit cargoes for landlocked countries is set to arrive Nigeria by ending of June.

The cargo laden vessels, according to the managing director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko, would berth at the $1.5bn Lekki Seaport.

Bello-Koko while speaking over the weekend at the commissioning of two 80-Ton Bollard Pull Tug-boats christened M.T MAIKOKO and M.T DA-OPUKURO, for Lekki port, said the agency recently held a meeting with officials from Chad, Niger and Cameroon over movement of their trans-shipment cargoes from Lekki Ports.

The NPA boss, however, stated that, the tugboat would help the country achieve its aim of turning the port into a trans-shipment hub.

“By acquiring these tug boats, which are the largest in Africa, we will be able to bring in vessels of all sizes. What this means is that there would be less waiting time and it will eventually lead to reduction in cargo dwell time. We already have interest from other African countries that about two weeks ago, we had a meeting with officials from Chad, Niger and Cameroon and the idea is to see how we can start moving their cargoes from Nigeria to their ports.

“These countries are looking for a port that will reduce waiting time for cargoes and also have right protocols put in place. These tug boats that were commissioned for Lekki Port will help us achieve our aim of turning the port into a trans-shipment hub. I know that trans-shipment cargoes should come into Lekki Port maybe in the next three weeks.

“With this tug boats, we will tug in any vessel, no matter the size. So this means we will take back businesses from neighboring countries and the cargo going hitherto going to other countries will come back. What we are doing today is a demonstration of this administration’s resolve to position the NPA and respond squarely to the contemporary demands of trade facilitation,” he pointed out.

The NPA boss, however, stated that, the resolve of the NPA to deploy Lekki Deep Seaport as launch pad for trans-shipment remains unwavering.

“In addition to positively affecting the turnaround time of large vessels, their deployment will enable stakeholders leverage the concomitant benefits of economies of scale, especially cost savings.

“Permit me to seize this opportunity to reiterate that our drive towards deploying Lekki Deep Seaport as launch pad for trans-shipment remains unwavering and this event today is confirmation of our doggedness on this noble cause.

“Let me conclude by assuring all consignees, concessionaires and other stakeholders of continuous improvement in service delivery from the Nigerian Port Authority,”

Speaking earlier, the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry Of Transportation, Dr Magdalene Ajani, said, the purchase of the two Tug boats by the NPA has accentuated the determination of the ministry to boost port operational efficiency.

“My joy derives from the fact that the acquisition of these equipment, amongst many others that are in the works, signposts Nigeria’s seriousness to optimize the opportunities inherent in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement to which we are signatory.

“Maximising the comparative advantages that our maritime assets as a littoral nation confers rests heavily on how much we are able to deepen our efficiencies through the deployment of relevant technology and equipment,” the permanent secretary said.

She applauded the NPA management for delivering on the project in good time, saying it would support the optimisation of the Lekki Seaport.

Thousands Evacuated As Philippine Volcano Oozes Lava

0

Around 13,000 people have been evacuated in north-east Philippines as the country’s most famous volcano, Mayon, continued to ooze lava.

Riding lorries and buffalo-drawn carriages, people living within the “permanent danger zone” or six-kilometre radius fled to shelters.

Known for its “perfect” conical shape, Mayon started spewing lava last week.

But evacuations only began over the weekend as volcanic activity intensified, setting of alerts.

More people could be evacuated if Mayon’s unrest intensifies in the coming days, said Teresito Bacolcol, the country’s chief volcanologist.

It is currently under the third highest warning in a five-tier system that forecasts the threat of a hazardous or explosive eruption. It is technically erupting, albeit at a slow pace, with lava oozing from the crater, scientists say.

Located in a farming peninsula called Bicol, Mayon is among the country’s most active volcanoes. It has grown restive in recent weeks with more frequent earthquakes and rocks falling from its crater.

“There’s the danger of a fast-moving current of volcanic gases and rocks from the crater,” Bacolcol told local media. “It will be difficult to outrun those currents.”

An eruption in 1814 killed 1,200 people and buried an entire town. But the perimeter was declared off limits, resulting in fewer casualties after recent eruptions in 2013 and 2018.

As Mayon glowed a fiery red, tourists have also begun to camp out in hilltops to witness the volcanic spectacle. Mayon, which Guinness describes as the world’s “most conical” volcano, is a tourist favourite.

Local officials have designated viewing points where thrill-seekers can marvel at its glowing crater.

NDDC To Fast-Track Intervention On Erosion-Ravaged Road In Rivers State

0

The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has vowed to intervene urgently to resuscitate the erosion-damaged Akinima-Joinkarama Road linking several communities in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria’s south-south.

Speaking at the erosion site, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, empathized with the people of Akinima and Joinkarama communities, as well as commuters using the road, for the pains they were going through.

Ogbuku, who was accompanied by the Executive Director of Projects, Mr Charles Ogunmola and other Directors of the Commission, assured that remediation work at the erosion site would commence immediately.

He observed that the damage on the road was enormous and would require short and long-term solutions.

Ogbuku said that it was important for him and the team of engineers to visit the site to have first-hand information for proper assessment and appropriate response.

He noted that to ensure a long-term solution, the commission will provide shore protection for the road and the communities.

Akinima Youth Laeder, Winner Ake, lamented that the Orashi River, which passes through the area, contributed to the gully erosion. He noted that the road has been taken over by criminals to harass and attack the road users that and appealed to development agencies to come to their rescue.

A resident of Akinima, Mr. Newton Odum bemoaned the level of environmental degradation, poverty and neglect in the area, despite playing host to many oil wells.

Hot Weather: Scotland Reaches Heatwave Temperatures

0

Scotland is now officially experiencing a heatwave after an extended period of hot weather, the Met Office confirmed on Monday.

A number of weather stations across the country have reached 25C or above for three days in a row.

Temperatures in Auchincruive, South Ayrshire, reached 29.8C on Saturday – making it the warmest day of the year in Scotland.

And the warm weather is set to continue for the next week.

Hot spots across the country include Eskdalemuir and Threave in Dumfries and Galloway, and Aviemore.

While people have enjoyed the rising temperatures, firefighters have warned of an increased risk of wildfires.

On Saturday, the fire service tackled a wildfire which broke out south of Inverness in the Daviot area, with local residents advised to keep windows and doors closed because of smoke.

The blaze was about 30 miles (48km) from Cannich – the site of another recent wildfire thought be the largest recorded in the UK.

The Met Office forecasts that next week the risk of thundery downpours will continue in some areas and temperatures are likely to remain above average.

It has extended the yellow warning for thunderstorms in western Scotland until Tuesday at 21:00.

Sepa has also warned of significant water scarcity in the Loch Maree area of the Highlands, and moderate scarcity in Ness in the Highlands and Esk in Dumfriesshire.

Hotsat-1: Novel British Satellite Set To Go Into Orbit

0

A novel British satellite is set to go into orbit later on Monday, designed to map the heat signature of buildings.

The idea is to highlight those dwellings that are wasting energy and could benefit from better insulation.

The relatively small spacecraft is called, appropriately, HotSat-1; and will be operated by the London-based start-up Satellite Vu.

Its infrared sensor has been developed with funds from the UK and European space agencies.

HotSat-1 is due to launch on a SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 14:19 PDT (22:19 BST).

Flying at an altitude of 500km (311 miles), it will have the resolution to see individual roof tops and walls.

The UK has some of the most inefficient housing stock in Europe, with the vast majority of dwellings built pre-1970.

Colombia Plane Crash: Mum Told Children To Leave Her, Get Help

2

The mother of four children rescued after 40 days in the Amazon jungle was alive for four days after their plane crashed.

Magdalena Mucutuy told her children to leave and find help as she lay dying.

Speaking to reporters, the children’s father, Manuel Ranoque, said his eldest daughter told him their mother urged them to “get out” and save themselves.

The siblings, aged 13, nine, five, and one, were rescued and airlifted out of the jungle on Friday.

They were moved to a military hospital in the nation’s capital Bogota.

How 4 children survived 40 days in hostile Colombian jungle

“The one thing that [13-year-old Lesly] has cleared up for me is that, in fact, her mother was alive for four days,” Mr Ranoque told reporters outside the hospital.

“Before she died, their mum told them something like, ‘You guys get out of here. You guys are going to see the kind of man your dad is, and he’s going to show you the same kind of great love that I have shown you,” he said.

Details have been emerging about the children’s time in the jungle and their miraculous rescue – including the first things the children said when they were found.

Rescue worker Nicolás Ordóñez Gomes recalled the moment they discovered the children.

“The eldest daughter, Lesly, with the little one in her arms, ran towards me. Lesly said: ‘I’m hungry,'” he told public broadcast channel RTVC.

“One of the two boys was lying down. He got up and said to me: ‘My mum is dead.'” He said rescuers responded with “positive words, saying that we were friends, that we were sent by the family”.

Mr Ordóñez said the boy replied: “I want some bread and sausage.”

The children are members of the Huitoto indigenous group and their grandfather told Colombian media that their knowledge of edible fruit and seeds had been key to their survival.

The eldest child, 13-year-old Lesly, has been credited with keeping her siblings alive.

Henry Guerrero, an indigenous man who was part of the team which finally located the children, said they managed to build a small shelter.

“They had made a small tent from a tarpaulin and placed a towel on the ground. They always stayed near the river and she [Lesly] carried a small soda bottle which she used to [fill with and] carry water.”

In footage released on Sunday of the children’s rescue, the four siblings appeared to be emaciated from the weeks they spent fending for themselves in the wilderness.

Mr Guerrero said that “the only thing they had in mind was to eat, eat”, when they were found. “They wanted to eat rice pudding, they wanted to eat bread,” he said.

Ms Mucutuy and her children had been travelling on the Cessna 206 aircraft from Araracuara, in Amazonas province, to San José del Guaviare, on 1 May.

Their plan was to join the children’s father, who had fled their home after receiving threats from a rebel group.

The plane crashed nose first in dense jungle in the south of Colombia after experiencing engine failure. It took search teams two weeks to locate the wreckage.

The bodies of the adults on board – the children’s mother and the two pilots – were found at the crash site by the army but it appeared that the children had wandered into the rainforest to find help.

The missing children became the focus of a huge rescue operation involving more than 100 soldiers, local indigenous people and sniffer dogs.

The search teams repeatedly spotted signs in the jungle, including footprints and fruit that had been bitten into, which led them to believe the children had survived the crash.

Helicopters flew over the area broadcasting a recorded message from their grandmother in the Huitoto language urging them to stay put to make it easier to locate them.

The children told their rescuers that they had heard the helicopters and the message.

They were finally located on Friday in a small clearing by a team of rescuers who had heard one of the siblings crying. “When we found them, it was really a great happiness,” Mr Guerrero said, describing the moment.

Their grandfather, Fidencio Valencia, said they were “very weakened, they have small wounds and bruises, they have illnesses that they contracted in the jungle, but overall they’re well, they’re in good hands”.

Over $56bn Lost To Oil Theft, Subsidy – Presidency Panel

0

Nigeria lost $46.16bn to crude oil theft between 2009 and 2020, and $10.7bn per year to subsidy on Petrol according to the Energy and Natural Resources subcommittees of the Advisory Council of President Bola Tinubu.

A summation of the amounts lost to oil theft and subsidy indicated that the country lost a total of $56.86bn, going by figures released in the Policy Advisory Council Report, dated May 2023, which was prepared when Tinubu was still President-elect.

On highlights of economic and sector challenges in the report, the council also stated that $70bn worth of investments was lost in the petroleum industry since 2011 due to the absence of the Petroleum Industry Act.

The PIA was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari, after dragging for decades as a bill at the National Assembly.

The report further pointed out that at seven per cent, Nigeria’s revenue to Gross Domestic Product ratio was among the five lowest in the world.

It read in part, “Insecurity is a major sector challenge. $46.16bn was lost to crude oil theft between 2009 and 2020. $10.70bn lost annually to PMS subsidy and inefficiencies associated with the purchase, distribution, and sale of PMS.

“Governance and regulatory concerns have eroded investor confidence, diverting private capital needed for the development of critical oil and gas infrastructure.

“Cumulatively, these have reduced the energy sector contribution to economic growth and deprived citizens of the necessary infrastructure and social amenities required for improving living standards.”

The council outlined some targets to be pursued by the President between 0 to 100 days, adding that there was a need to unify the exchange rate window and reorganize the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission/Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

It said the reorganization of the agencies would be to deliver set milestone goals, adding that there was a need to headhunt/place capable resources in critical positions.

“Head-hunt competent, tested, reform-focused leaders in NNPCL (Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited), ensuring its function as a commercial entity per PIA (Petroleum Industry Act); paying taxes, royalties and profit to Federation Account and properly regulated by NUPRC/NMDPRA/NCDMB.

“Deregulate PMS pricing and implement Federal Direct Cash Transfer Programme. Signal determination to end insecurity in oil-producing states (Imo, Delta, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom) by engaging key political and community stakeholders.

“Reform the operations of the military task force with clearly defined KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and consequent management to tackle deficiencies. Improve financing, agree on cash call arrears and debt repayment framework. Transition to market prices for gas,” the report stated.

On some of the things to execute within 18 to 24 months, the council advised the President to “mandate the NNPCL and NUPRC/NMDPRA to close out outstanding divestments and contract issues for project delivery clarity.

Exploring Markthall Rotterdam, Netherlands

0

Markthall, or as the English translation would be the Market Hall, is a residential and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

It definitely is a sustainable combination of food, leisure, living and parking, fully integrated to celebrate and enhance the synergistic possibilities of the different functions.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The market is football pitch size indoor floor area full of fresh fish, meat and vegetable stalls and delicatessens. It has 100 fresh produce sellers, 15 food shops and 8 restaurants.

From fresh bread to delicious cheese, fish and poultry and even flowers and plants, you’ll find it all under one roof.

The market itself is a secure, covered square which emerges beneath an arc, conceived as an inversion of a typical market square and its surrounding buildings.

During the day it serves as central market hall, after hours the hall becomes an enormous, covered, well lit public space.

Designed by the architectural firm MVRDV, the grey nature stone building has an arch-wise structure, something like a horseshoe, with 11 floors and 4 underground floors.

The construction started in 2009 and was completed in October 2014, with overall cost of €178 million.

The building has a glass façade on both sides, which is made up of smaller glass windows, that are hung around a structure of steel cables (26 vertical and 22 horizontal), 34 meters (112 feet) high and 42 meters (138 feet) wide which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe.

Arno Coenen was the artist who did his artwork on the interior of the building, which is named Hoorns des Overvloeds, or the English translation Horn of Plenty.

As it is a market, it comes as no surprise that the artwork is actually enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects. Certainly, this may look like an ordinary building to some people, but most of all it deserves to have the epithet The Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam.
