ASUU, Others, Express Doubts Over Student Loans

0

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, in Abuja, signed the Student Loan Bill into law.

A member of the Presidential Strategic Team, Dele Alake, told State House Correspondents on Monday evening that the signing of the bill was in “fulfilment of one of his campaign promises to liberalize funding of education,”

According to Alake, who was accompanied by other members of the media team and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, David Adejoh, the new law mandates prospective beneficiaries to show proof of their origins.

The Students Loan Act is Tinubu’s second piece of legislation signed since he assumed office two weeks ago.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, will enable indigent students to access loans at interest-free rates.

Alake said the move was in sync with standard practice in developed climes globally and would ease access to education.

“This is how it’s done in other developed climes. So this is a boost to our youths and students nationwide.

“Of course, there are prescribed qualification parameters. And that is the proof of indigenship of whoever is to be a beneficiary.

“Of course, there are committees to be set up. The members of committees will be drawn from various bodies to superintend over the efficient and proficient disbursement of this facility,” he added.

He also said although the bill takes effect immediately, the procedures for application will be worked out by the committees to superintend the process.

In reaction, the Academic Staff Union of Universities described the loan bill as discriminatory between the children of the rich and the poor.

National President, ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview, said, “The union will react soon but everyone knows our position on student loans because you will end up encumbering the children of the poor with loans and debt after graduating. This is discriminatory. If what I read online is correct, it said it is only for children whose parents earn at least N500,000 per annum. That means if your father earns more, you won’t benefit.”

Similarly, the National President, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Anderson Ezeibe, said, “I have not studied the bill and we don’t want to react on the surface. But I have seen one area that will not be practicable.

“It says that students should refund the money two years after NYSC. But what is the provision for someone who is not working after NYSC?  And will they all get jobs immediately after NYSC?”

However, the National Association of Nigerian Students described the student loan bill as a “way forward” in the country’s education system.

The Coordinator, NAN, Zone D, Adejuwon Emmanuel, however, faulted the repayment terms.

“Without saying much, student loan bill is a way forward to the educational system in Nigeria, because it will assist students whose parents cannot afford to pay tuition fees to be able to pay with the loan.

“But as good as this is, there are some questions that need to be answered by the government. The ultimatum for repayment is not feasible. As we all know that there is no work anywhere and most graduates don’t get work immediately, how will they pay back? How will it work when most of our graduates do not get jobs? Is there any plan or opportunity for those that have no work two years after NYSC?”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Adejoh, On his part, said by implication, the current scholarship board of the Federal Government will become a loan board capable of offering educational credit facilities to qualified applicants.

“Today, what the President has done goes beyond the symbolism. It is a demonstration of intent in terms of how he wants to handle education as he progresses in his presidency. Once the bill has been signed, that is the most important thing. A bill tells you what should be done. The how is what we are going to put together.

“What we have now is that nobody shall say money did not allow him to go to school,” he added.

A former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Uyo, Prof Ini Uko, in an interview lauded the initiative but mentioned that this will affect the tuition fees as the subsidy on tertiary education will be removed.

AFCON: I’m Excited To Return To Super Eagles, Says Awoniyi

0

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi ,has revealed he’s excited to return to the Super Eagles squad but maintains that getting the call-up is a privilege.

Soccernet.ng reports that the Super Eagles will play Sierra Leone in their penultimate game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on the 18th of June.

Ahead of the game, Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro called up 23 players. And Nottingham Forest star Awoniyi made the cut. It was his first invite since September 2022, when the team lost to Algeria in a friendly game.

Awoniyi missed the game against Portugal last November because he was not in form. He was also unavailable for the double-header against Guinea-Bissau because of an injury.

However, the 24-year-old hitman returned to action in April while the Premier League was on. The City Ground outfit were in danger of relegation at the time, but Awoniyi rescued them.

The Super Eagles star scored five goals in Forest’s last three games to guide them to safety. His performances for his side earned him a call-up to the national team for the first time since September.

The camp in Lagos was opened on the 11th of June, but Awoniyi arrived days, albeit in Ilorin, to show support to the teams in the final of the Never Stop Steam Cup- a competition he organized for grassroots clubs in Ilorin.

Awoniyi revealed that he was excited when he received the invitation to the Super Eagles. He also stated that it is a privilege, and no player can be on the team forever.

It’s a great privilege for any player, it’s an honour, and it should not be taken for granted

“I’m very happy I was invited, I am proud and overjoyed as well. However, the Super Eagles is not a home for everybody, you can’t be there forever because it is not for one player.

“You may be there today and not be there tomorrow. But the main thing is that you should put in your best when you get the opportunity.

“Playing for your country is a pride for any player, and if you look at the Premier League, the Bundesliga, the Laliga, and other leagues, we have a lot of Nigerian players doing well.

“When they make the lists, Nigerians would always ask why a certain player is there on it. Nigerians would always have something to say, that is to show how big the Nation is in terms of talent.

“So I tell myself that getting the call up does not mean I should take it for granted. I’m happy I’m there, but I believe it’s a big honour and privilege.

Cricket: Uganda defeat Nigeria in Kwibuka

0

After making a flying start to their campaign at the ongoing ninth edition of the Kwibuka in Rwanda, Nigeria’s female senior cricket team suffered a five-wicket defeat against Uganda on Monday.

The Female Yellow Greens had recorded impressive wins in their first three games against hosts Rwanda, Botswana and Kenya but their wit was tested against the best ranked team at the tournament and it ended in a gallant defeat.

Uganda won the toss and elected to field, thereby sending Nigeria to bat for the first time in the tournament.

Captain Blessing Etim lost her wicket off the first ball in the second over, which allowed Uganda to grow in confidence.

Esther Sandy came up after the 10th over with an impressive half century of 52 runs off 39 balls and a strike rate of 133.3, partnered by the ever-dependable Lucky Piety with massive contribution of 27 runs off 37 balls under immense pressure.

Nigeria finished with 100 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs.

They began the second inning with a maiden over from Rachael Samson to send indications that Uganda will have to work hard in their run chase. Nigeria was in control for most of the proceedings but for the relentless efforts and experience of Kevin Awino, who scored 22 off 45 runs, and Stephanie Nampiina with 20 runs off 22 balls, and a late surge from Immaculate Nakisuyi, who scored 31 off 20 balls, which was enough to see Uganda across the line to ensure they maintained their expectations and 100 per cent record in the tournament thus far.

Kylian Mbappe told Paris Saint-Germain that he would not be taking up an option to extend his contract until 2025, raising the spectre of him following Lionel Messi out of the club this summer. The 24-year-old France striker’s current deal expires at the end of next season, with the option of another year.

If he does not sign, the French champions risk losing him for nothing in a year’s time — so they could now sell him this summer rather than miss out on a windfall for one of the world’s best players.

Mbappe’s decision not to renew announced in a letter to the club and revealed by the French sports daily L’Equipe, is a fresh blow to PSG following the loss of Messi to Inter Miami.

There had been a deadline of July 31, 2023, for Mbappe to decide.

Mbappe’s move comes a little over a year since he snubbed Real Madrid by signing a surprise extension to his contract to remain at the Parc des Princes.

Real would again be chief among his suitors.

Mbappe’s entourage did not respond immediately when asked late Monday evening. The striker’s departure for free at the end of his current contract, in the summer of 2024, would prove catastrophic for PSG.

In addition to the void left in the team, the club would also be deprived of the millions of Euros a transfer would earn. The future of Brazilian fellow star striker Neymar, under contract until 2025, also appears vague ahead of what is shaping up to be a summer of upheaval in the French capital.

Mbappe joined PSG on a season-long loan from Monaco in August 2017 that turned into a permanent deal worth 180 million Euros ($194 million).

The Denver Nuggets captured their first title in 47 NBA seasons, defeating the Miami Heat 94-89 behind 28 points and 16 rebounds from Nikola Jokic.

The Nuggets won the best-of-seven NBA Finals 4-1 to bring the Mile High City an NBA crown as a sellout crowd roared in delight while delivering Miami’s third finals loss in 10 seasons.

“I’ve got news for everybody out there. We’re not satisfied with one,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said afterward. “We want more.”

The championship filled the final gap in the impressive resume of Serbian star Jokic, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and five-time All-Star center in his eighth NBA campaign.

Two days after countryman Novak Djokovic won the French Open for his record 23rd Grand Slam tennis crown, Jokic was named the NBA Finals MVP.

He delivered on a night when the team struggled with shooting futility but blanked Miami for more than five minutes of the fourth quarter.

“It was amazing effort by the team,” Jokic said. “It was an ugly game. We couldn’t make shots. But at the end we figured it out, how to defend and we scored 90 points. That’s why we won. I’m just happy we won the game.

Denver was the playoff top seed in the Western Conference while the Heat had to win a play-in game just to reach the playoffs but then upset NBA wins leader Milwaukee, New York and Boston to advance to the finals.

Michael Porter Jr. added 16 points and 13 rebounds and Jamal Murray added 14 points, eight rebounds and eight asists for the Nuggets.

“We’re winning for the guys next to us,” Jokic said. “That’s why this means so much. Everything this year is amazing. We believe in each other.”

Jimmy Butler led Miami with 21 points while Bam Adebayo added 20 and 12 rebounds.

With their seasons on the line, players brought intensity and physical defending over the final minutes to create an electric atmosphere inside Ball Arena.

Jamal Murray’s jumper gave Denver an 81-76 lead with 6:43 remaining while the Heat began the fourth quarter hitting only 2-for-14 from the floor and going scoreless for more than five minutes.
