1

President Bola Tinubu has promised to review the minimum wage to align with the current economic realities of the country.

According to him, the federal and state governments need to take a look at the minimum wage together and also strengthen the source and application of the country’s revenue.

He made this known on Friday while meeting with the members of the Progressive Governors Forum, who declared support for the president on the removal of subsidy.

Speaking when he received members of the Imo’s Hope Uzodimma-led forum, Tinubu said, “We need to do some arithmetic and soul searching on the minimum wage,’’ adding, “We will have to take a look at that together, and the revenue. We must strengthen the source and application of our revenue.’’

The president told the governors, “I have inherited the assets and liabilities of my predecessor. This is the first time you entered the Council Chambers, and it is my first time too for a meeting.

“As progressives and thinkers under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress, you have a role to play in educating our people and making sure we manage ourselves.”

He also assured that the multiple exchange rates currently prevalent in the country would be streamlined saying “If we work together, the Nigeria of our dreams is not far away. Rest assured that we will not have multiple exchange rates anymore. You asked for this meeting, and I had to set aside time to be here.

“We have a political party that we will need to manage, whichever way, we have inherited assets and liabilities, and we cannot complain.”

Speaking on behalf of the PGF, Uzodimma pledged to support the President, adding that the decisions already taken by Tinubu foretell good intentions for the economy.

Students in the Faculty of Science, University of Lagos were thrown into a jubilant mood as the election results of their science students’ association was made public on Monday the 29th day of May.

For the first time in 32 years since the inception of the University of Lagos Science Students’ Association (ULSSA), a female student, Adeniji Imole-Ayo Mary won the elections and was returned elected according to the extant electoral guidelines.

In what was described by many as a keenly contested election, Adeniji, a 300L student in the Department of Chemistry polled 503 votes to defeat her nearest contender Olatinwo Phillip Opeyemi (400L, Biochemistry) who managed to get 35 votes.

Adeniji’s ambition to run for the office of ULSSA President was met with mixed reactions, as a few students expressed concerns at the ‘quality’ of her candidacy especially as it concerns leading a faculty of over 5,000 students in the 2023/2024 academic session.

Students Association Condemns ASUU Declaring Indefinite Strike

The 29-year-old former class representative of the Chemistry Class of ’22 expressed to her close-call supporters that she was in the race to win and not just to become popular.

“I have nursed this intention to become ULSSA President for some time now. I decided to throw my hat in the ring despite not immediately getting the support of most student leaders in my department. I’m grateful to God for making me an arrowhead in this new dispensation. He promised me and I followed his leading”

Adeniji, in her manifesto, promised to consolidate on the gains of the outgoing ULSSA administration. She said that her leadership (with the support of her cabinet members) would be committed to empowering students’ with diverse opportunities for capacity building that would help bridge the gap between the classroom and industry.

The President-elect also promised to align the students’ association with off-campus community projects in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This move, she believes would attract goodwill to the association and enable her administration to execute insightful plans and programs for an all-round learning cum extra-curricular experience for most ULSSAITES.

Adeniji’s emergence as ULSSA President is coming at a time when the Federal Government of Nigeria recently appointed Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola as the 13th and first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos.

The 33rd ULSSA President, fondly called Brightness (in a loose translation of her name Imole-Ayo) by close friends and associates feels inspired by Prof. Ogunsola’s feat and is determined to encourage more female students aspire to lead and become voices of reason in their respective students’ association.

Coach of South Korea U-20 team Kim Eun-joong has listed strong points of the Nigeria U-20 team ahead of their last-8 clash at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

South Korea defeated Ecuador 3-2 in the round of 16 clash on Thursday June 1 to set-up a quarter final meeting with Nigeria who took out tournament host Argentina the previous day.

Speaking after goals from Lee Young-jun, Bae Jun-ho and Choi Seok-hyun propelled his team to victory over Ecuador, South Korea Head Coach Kim Eun-joong admitted their next opponents are well prepared and possess three key qualities.

“When I watched the game against Argentina yesterday, the Nigerian team seemed to be very well prepared. Players in all positions are physically outstanding and have flexibility.

” We will do the analysis properly.” he told newsmen

Nigeria are the only remaining African representatives left in the tournament same as South Korea who will fly Asia’s flag in the last-8.

As a result of this, the South Korea Head coach is looking forward to maximum support from the continent as they prepare to give their all vs Nigeria,

“I think the young players were able to give their all on the field because of the interest and support in the early hours every time.”

” We will prepare hard for the match against Nigeria, so please support us from afar. As an Asian team, Korea is the only team that maintains its pride, so I will prepare well for the next game and produce good results with a sense of responsibility and pride as an Asian representative.” he added.

Nigeria Vs Ecuador will faceoff in the quater-final on June 4. The winner of that match will face either Colombia or Italy in the semi-final of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

Flying Eagles Arrive Santiago Del Estero For Korea Republic Duel

Nigeria’s inspired U20 boys have flown into the northern Argentine city of Santiago del Estero ahead of Sunday’s FIFA U20 World Cup quarter-final clash with their counterparts from Korea Republic.

The Koreans on Thursday edged hard-fighting Ecuador 3-2 in their own Round of 16 encounter, to set up a much-anticipated last-eight tango with the two-time silver medallists.

Seven-time African champions Nigeria have surged on the bookmakers’ ratings and are now regarded as favourites following Wednesday night’s commanding defeat of hosts and six-time champions Argentina in their Round of 16 encounter in San Juan.

Isah Ladan Bosso, who was also head coach when the Flying Eagles reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada 16 years ago, told thenff.com on Thursday that his team has kept to the pre-tournament philosophy of dealing with one match at a time.

“We are delighted to have executed a perfect game plan against Argentina. Our strategy and tactics worked out and the boys worked very hard. Now, we have to concentrate on what to expect from the Koreans. We have been watching their games at this championship and we have a good idea how to prepare for them.

“Again, the boys must work hard and carry out our plan on match day. We have the playing personnel to do the job and I am positive we will cross the Korean hurdle.”

In 2007 in Canada, Bosso’s wards defeated Costa Rica and Scotland and drew with Japan to reach the Round of 16, where they edged fellow Africans Zambia 2-1 in Ottawa to set up a quarter-final date with Chile in Montreal.

That team, captained by Nduka Ozokwo, stood up to the Chileans for 90 minutes but collapsed in extra time under the covered arena of the Montreal Olympic Stadium. Bosso says he is aware of the quarter-final banana peel and will not stumble this time.

“It is a new day, a new championship, a new city and a new team. Nigeria has been in the final of this same competition on two previous occasions. Our objective is to at least match that feat. Once we’re in the final, anything can happen.”

Sunday’s quarter-final battle with the Koreans is scheduled for the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, from 6.30pm Nigeria time

Court Sacks AYU as PDP National Chairman

0

A Makurdi High Court, has ruled that Iyorchia Ayu can no longer hold office as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, having lost membership of the party in his Igyorov Council Ward of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State in March.

He ruled that Ayu’s membership of the PDP elapsed with his failure to pay his membership subscription fee.

A member of the PDP in Benue State, Conrad Terhide Utaan dragged Ayu to court after his Igyorov Ward executive committee of the party suspended him after passing a vote of no confidence on him.

In suit No: MHC/85/2023,Utaan, sought among other reliefs a declaration that, Ayu is no longer fit and qualified to hold office as the national chairman of the PDP, having lost membership of the party in his Igyorov Council Ward of Gboko, where he first registered as a member of the party.

PDP Gets New Acting National Chairman As Ayu Steps Down

He also sought a declaration of court that Ayu cannot hold himself out, function and preside over the affairs of the PDP as its national chairman having ceased to enjoy all the rights and privileges of membership by virtue of his suspension by the ward executive committee of the party in his Igyorov Council Ward of Gboko Local Government Area.

The plaintiff further sought an order restraining Ayu from parading himself as the national chairman of the PDP on the premise that he had lost membership of the party in his ward, amongst other reliefs.

Ayu through his counsel Johnson Usman, filed preliminary objections to the suit bordering on the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit, saying it was an internal affair of a political party.

He also challenged the locus standi of the plaintiff,Utaan to institute the action, adding that the plaintiff had not exhausted the internal dispute resolution mechanism of the party, amongst other objections.

Utaan through his counsel, Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, argued against the preliminary objections and urged the court to discountenance the preliminary objections and grant the reliefs sought by the plaintiff.

Delivering his judgment that lasted for 2-hours, the Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, resolved all the issues raised in the preliminary objections in favour of the plaintiff and accordingly dismissed same.

Justice Ikpambese held that by virtue of Article 8(9)of the constitution of the PDP, Ayu ceased to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with his failure to pay his subscription and membership fee.

On the claim that the ward executive committee of the party cannot discipline a member of the National Executive Committee, NEC, Justice Ikpambese held that, going by the provisions of Article 46(1)of the PDP Constitution, the ward executive of the PDP have the powers to discipline a member of the NEC of the party.

The Judge pointed out that Ayu did not show proof that he has paid his membership subscription fee, and did not challenge his suspension before any organ of the party or before any court, thereby leaving the court with the impression that he has consented to his suspension by his ward executive committee.

He said Ayu had lost his membership of the party even before he was suspended by his ward executive committee.

Justice Ikpambese accordingly resolved all the issues in favour of the plaintiff.

“The plaintiff has proven his case, all the questions for determination have been resolved in favour of the plaintiff, he is entitled to all the reliefs sought. I so order”

Reacting to the judgment, counsel to Utaan, Mike Assoh described the judgment as sound, adding that the court has validated the action of the Igyorov Ward Executive Committee of the party against Ayu, for the former PDP National Chairman’s failure to pay his membership subscription fee.
