The Nigeria Labour Congress will commence a nationwide strike Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

The strike will be embarked upon if the government fails to reverse the new pump price for Premium Motor Spirit.

The national president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, made this known during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.

This comes amid fuel shortages across the country occasioned by President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural speech, in which he declared that “fuel subsidy is gone”.

The NLC also noted that it would no longer negotiate with individuals without portfolios.

Obi, LP Tenders Election Results From 6 More States

The Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi have tendered in evidence Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the presidential election results of six more states before the Presidential Election Petitions Court on Friday.

The results sheets contained in Forms EC8A were tendered form the bar by Obi’s lawyer Awa Kalu, and will be used to prove their alleged rigging and other malpractices during the presidential elections. The electoral documents were from Adamawa, Bayelsa, Oyo, Edo,Lagos and Akwa-ibom states.

On Thursday, Obi’s lawyer Emeka Okpoko had tendered CTCs of election documents across 115 Local Government Areas of Rivers, Benue, Cross River, Niger, Osun, and Ekiti states. The court admitted the documents despite opposition from all respondents in Obi’s petition.

At the resumed hearing on Friday, Kalu tendered Forms CTCs of forms EC8A of 21 LGA’s in Admawa state; 8 LGAs of Bayelsa, 31 LGAs of Oyo, 18 LGAs of Edo, 20 LGAs of Lagos and 31LGAs of Akwa-ibom state.

The five-man panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani admitted all CTCs of the result sheets in evidence despite opposition from all respondents in Obi’s petition.

Counsels to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the All Progressives Congress and president Bola Tinubu opposed the admissibility of Forms EC8A, and resolved t advance their reasons for their objection at the address stage.

Kalu further cited Pararagraph 40 of the 1st schedule to the electoral Act for CTCs which his team has so far tendered in its petition to be taken as read. But, counsels of all respondents withheld consent having opposed admissibility of the documents tendered by Obi’s counsel.

kalu, however said he is shocked and surprised the respondents are withholding their consent. Justice Tsammani told him to always expect surprises in a court room.

Kalu, then moved the motion for adjournment to Monday, if without prejudice to his petition. But, Justice Tsammani reminded Kalu that the court will seat Saturdays as stated in its pre-hearing report , and any day taken off will affect the number id days given his party for his petition.

Kalu, then moved the motion for adjournment till Saturday, but all respondents opposed the motion.

Counsel to INEC said, “I am concerned that your lordships are sitting for 9 hours everyday, let us use to tomorrow to do our exercises.”

Lateef Fagbemi, Counsel to Tinubu said,”It will not affect their time, even today you(Obi’s lawyer) don’t have documents, the ones you tendered were obtained far back as March. We plead to have tomorrow off, so that we can recoup.”

Kalu, then consulted with his team and prayed the court to adjourn till Monday. He said the adjournment will not affect its petition and tendering of documents.

Justice Tsammani therefore adjourned till Monday June 5 for continuation of hearing on Obi’s petition.

Local Refineries Won’t Change Fuel Price – NNPCL

0

The local production of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol, by Dangote Refinery, Port Harcourt Refining Company and others in Nigeria is not going to change the pump price of the commodity, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has said.

The NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, who disclosed this during an interview on Arise television in Abuja on Thursday, stressed that the notion that petrol prices would reduce once the country starts domestic production was false.

Kyari confirmed that the Dangote Refinery, which was inaugurated on May 22, 2023, by former President Muhammadu Buhari, would start pushing out products by the end of July and early August.

He also stated that the Port Harcourt Refinery would be delivered by the end of the year, adding that the facility was expected to further boost local production of petrol.

But Kyari declared that despite the volume of petrol being expected from these facilities, the cost of the commodity would not reduce, regardless of the fact that the product was produced locally.

“There is a notion that if the product is processed locally, prices will reduce. Let me make it clear that it is not going to change anything. If you produce locally, the refineries will also input the cost of production and other things and it will be sold at the current price.

“There will also be no subsidy when local production starts because there is no cash-to-back subsidy, this country no longer has the resources to continue with subsidy,” Kyari stated.

Speaking on when the fuel queues being witnessed across the country would clear, during another interview on Channels TV, the NNPCL boss said the queues would not exceed Saturday.

“I don’t see it staying beyond another day or two, maximum. It can actually be on Saturday. We have supplies. The key trouble with the PMS system is supply, but I have supplies.

“There are over 810 million litres of PMS in depots, tanks and fuel stations across the country, so you don’t have the problem of transferring those from marine to land, you already have them on the ground,” he stated.

He validated the PMS pricing document for various states that trended on Wednesday on the internet, stating that the document was from the NNPCL.

“You have seen a document in the space out there. Every company does this. It is a marketing document. It was not a price announcing document, every company keeps this record and adjusts it appropriately on the basis of changing conditions in the market.

“So what you saw was just an internal company document that found its way into the internet. It is an NNPC document but it was not intended to be an announcement and is not an announcement, because it can change the next day,” Kyari stated.

On whether there was enough product in-country, he said, “Today I have 1.8 billion litres of PMS and that means that if we don’t do anything, I’ll have sufficient fuel for the next 30 days in my hands.

Kyari explained that the company had over 800 million litres of petrol on land, stored in filling stations, tank farms and depots, while its total stock for both marine and land stood at about 1.8 billion litres.

“But, of course, the way we supply is not this way, so we maintain this level of supply consistently. That means you will see the arrival of products every day so that you continue to maintain that level of safety.”

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, at the party secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, Kyari revealed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu had concluded arrangements to have one of the four refineries repaired and operating at an optimal level before the end of the year.

The NNPCL boss argued that it was no longer justifiable to continue subsidising the commodity given the high opportunity cost the Federal Government was suffering from funding it.

Kyari, who was received by the APC chairman and members of the National Working Committee at about 12.30 pm, confessed that the country could no longer sustain the expensive subsidy regime.

According to him, over 38 per cent of the total fuel distributed in the country was consumed by Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Rivers.

Fuel Subsidy is Gone – Tinubu

Kyari explained that following the hike in pump price and the resultant effect on commercial fare, the president was working out some palliative measures to ease the pains of Nigerians.

He also added that there was an ongoing process of rehabilitation to ensure one of the refineries was ready this year.

Kyari lamented that despite its N2.8tn indebtedness to the NNPCL, the Federal Government had yet to release funds for 2022 and 2023 subsidies.

He said, “There was a subsidy in 2022 but in 2023, not a single naira was provided for the purpose. And ultimately while we held back our fiscal obligations, we still have a net balance of over N2.8tn that the federation should have given back to the NNPC.

‘’For any company, when you have negative N2.8tn, there is no company in the whole of Africa that will lend to you. You cannot have receivables. The provision of subsidy is there but absolutely there is no funding for it. It means it is only on paper. It doesn’t exist.

“We can no longer bear it. If we continue, we will run into defaults and the default of NNPC is the default of Nigeria. Once NNPC goes into default and liquidity, it affects every borrowing done by the country, even the sub-nationals. Your lenders will come back to you and say your country can no longer pay.

‘’The only way you can stop this is to stop this conversation around subsidy. It is why President announced that the subsidy is gone. In 24 hours, the bond market appreciated. It is nothing else other than the statement around subsidy and balancing of the apex market. These two elements are a major concern for every investor all over the world. Every partner that we have is worried about.’’

EFCC Probe: Ex-Ekiti Governor Fayemi Breaks Silence

The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi was interrogated by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday.

The Cable who broke the news had reported that the interrogation was based on alleged N4bn fraud committed by the former governor.

However, Fayemi refuted the “N4bn fraud claim” on Friday.

The former governor, via a statement by the Head of the Fayemi Media Office, said “no such allegation was raised during his conversation” with officials of the anti-graft agency.

According to the statement, all Fayemi did during the conversation with the officials of the EFCC in Ilorin, Kwara State, was respond to a “frivolous petition from a group that was trying to soil his good name and image.”

The statement read, “We would like to address the concerns surrounding the invitation and subsequent visit of Dr Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, to the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“Last month, Dr Fayemi received an invitation from the Ilorin office of the EFCC regarding a money laundering petition against him. It was during the height of the preparations for the change of government, with many activities and programmes lined up as part of the event.

“A key member of the APC, Dr Fayemi was already committed to playing important roles at these events and his non-appearance would have impacted them significantly. Understanding the significance of his commitments at that time, Dr Fayemi duly notified the EFCC of his willingness to cooperate but requested a more suitable date for his appearance.

The statement said, Fayemi on Thursday, accompanied by his counsel, visited the EFCC office in Ilorin, and engaged in fruitful discussions with the investigators before being allowed to depart after a few hours.

It added, “We firmly believe that Dr Fayemi’s visit has provided answers to the agency’s inquiries regarding the petition. However, should there be a need for further clarification, Dr Fayemi stands ready to cooperate fully.

“We wish to note, too, that contrary to the news that made the rounds about a purported N4b fraud case against Dr Fayemi, no such allegation was raised in his conversation with the EFCC.

Akpabio, Amosun, Fayemi, Four Others Step Down For Bola Tinubu

“All he did was respond to a frivolous petition from a faceless group, the so-called Ekiti Patriotic Coalition, which we strongly believed is a front for some anti-Fayemi politicians, who are trying to soil the former governor’s good name and image.”

The statement said throughout Fayemi’s tenure, he served the people of Ekiti State with utmost dedication and was renowned for his principled leadership.

“As governor, he consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to the welfare of the citizens, driving notable advancements in infrastructure development and attracting valuable investment opportunities to the state.

“We affirm that Dr Fayemi will continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity that he’s known for, and we trust that the truth will prevail in due course.”

Rwandan Govt. Encourages Digitization in Schools

0

The Rwandan government, through Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) has announced plans to reinforce the exercise of distributing laptops to teachers with officials saying that the target is to have all teachers in the country equipped with laptops by the year 2025.

It says this is an important pronouncement especially coming at a time the education sector is undergoing a series of reforms with a view to put the student at the center of the learning process through the Competence Based Curriculum that was launched about seven years ago.

With the new curriculum, there is need for constant research by the educators to ensure they are abreast of what is happening elsewhere, a departure from the past where they relied on decades-old textbooks that ended up missing context or overtaken by events.

The distribution of laptops to teachers, which has been ongoing for some time now, will also greatly complement the Smart Classroom initiative which is geared towards churning out a critical mass of innovators because a smart mindset starts with a teacher.

It also complements other incentives that have been put in place to ensure schools retain the best quality of teachers because it creates a better work environment for teachers, some of whom were shunning the trade due lack of information.

However, the distribution of laptops should go hand in hand with efforts to train the teachers on how best to make the most of them to produce maximum results.

The agency said the initiative makes an urgent case for speeding up the process to connect all schools to the internet because a laptop without internet will be as good as nothing both for the teachers and their learners.

National Assoc. Of Nigerian Students Lauds JAMB for Sanitizing Sector

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has assured its readiness to collaborate with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to sanitize the nation’s education sector.

NANS Vice President, External Affairs, Babatunde Akinteye, in a statement said the board’s battle against malpractice and other examination vices is what has kept the system going.

Akinteye, who recently called out JAMB, following hiccups in the registration of direct entry candidates, said NANS will assist the examination body in its fight against malpractice.

He said the reason was because the registration centers were reduced due to abnormalities going on in some tertiary institutions.

He said that some students allegedly purchase Ordinary National Diploma (OND) certificates and use same to obtain their direct entry forms to begin at a higher level in various institutions of higher learning.

According to him, JAMB discovered the unhealthy practice and moved to streamline the registration centers for proper monitoring and supervision.

He said the union persuaded JAMB to de-congest the centers and extend the closing date for more candidates to register.

Akinteye warned institutions involved in the certificate saga to desist or face the wrath of NANS.

He also pleaded to students to shun acts capable of compromising their future and avoid cutting corners.
