Former US Envoy Buys 1,100-Yr-Old Hebrew Bible For $38.1m

0

The former United States Ambassador to Romania, Alfred Moses bought a 1,100-year-old Hebrew Bible for $38 million in New York, the United States, on Wednesday.

The Bible, named The Codex Sassoon, is one of the world’s oldest surviving biblical manuscripts.

It was purchased by Moses on behalf of the American Friends of ANU (Australian National University).

After its acquisition, the former US envoy donated it to the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel, where it will join the collection, Sotheby’s, a fine arts company said in a statement.

The manuscript was exhibited at the ANU Museum in March as part of a worldwide tour before the auction.

Sotheby’s Judaica specialist, Sharon Liberman Mintz said the $38 million price tag, which included the auction house’s fee, “reflects the profound power, influence, and significance of the Hebrew Bible, which is an indispensable pillar of humanity.”

It’s one of the highest prices for a manuscript sold at auction. In 2021, a rare copy of the US Constitution sold for $43 million. Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester sold for $31 million in 1994, or around $60 million in today’s dollars.

Mintz said she was “absolutely delighted by today’s monumental result and that Codex Sassoon will shortly be making its grand and permanent return to Israel, on display for the world to see.”

The Codex Sassoon is believed to have been fabricated sometime between 880 and 960.

It received its name in 1929 when it was bought by David Solomon Sassoon, a son of an Iraqi Jewish business magnate who filled his London home with his collection of Jewish manuscripts.

Sassoon’s estate was broken up after he died and the biblical codex was sold by Sotheby’s in Zurich in 1978 to the British Rail Pension Fund for around $320,000, or $1.4 million in today’s dollars.

The pension fund sold the Codex Sassoon 11 years later to Jacqui Safra, a banker and art collector, who bought it in 1989 for $3.19 million ($7.7 million in today’s dollars). Safra was the seller on Wednesday.

Hypertension: FG to Place 80% Nigerians on Treatment

0

The Federal Government said it has instituted strategic interventions at the Tertiary, Secondary, and Primary Health Care levels to screen at least 80 per cent of the eligible population and place 80 per cent with hypertension on standard treatment and care.

The FG also said it is working towards ensuring that 80 per cent of those on treatment have their blood pressure controlled to avert complications and to reduce premature death as a result of cardiovascular diseases and other non-communicable diseases to 25 per cent.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who made this known in Abuja on Wednesday, during the commemoration of this year’s World Hypertension Day, with the theme: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” said hypertension is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in the country.

Every May 17, the global community commemorates World Hypertension Day.

Usually, people with hypertension do not have any specific signs or symptoms directly attributed to the condition.

Symptoms are usually foreboding of damage to specific organs in the body, including the heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys, resulting from poor control.

Ehanire, who was represented by the Director of Public Health at the Ministry, Dr. Morenike Alex-Okoh, said, “Hypertension is the leading cardiovascular disease and NCDs, and it is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, with the low-and-middle-income countries responsible for nearly 80 per cent of the global cardiovascular disease burden.

“It is worrisome that the burden of hypertension is disproportionately more in the low- and middle-income countries in recent decades due to the increase in the prevalence of risk factors such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and harmful alcohol consumption. The significant burden is further accentuated by the high proportion of persons that are unaware of their condition, putting them at risk of avoidable medical complications and death.

“It is important to note that public awareness creation, education, routine screening at every opportunity, early detection and diagnosis, counselling, and prompt provision of standard treatment and care are essentials elements for hypertension prevention and control, otherwise hypertension can lead to fatal complications such as heart disease, heart failure, stroke, blindness, chronic kidney failure, dementia, etc.

“Hypertension is preventable and can easily be detected and treated – its control is paramount in reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease in the country. For those on treatment, please avoid the temptation of stopping your medication and follow-up clinic visits without advice from your doctor or the health care worker attending to you.”

In her message, the World Health Organisation Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, said, close to 40 per cent of adults aged 30-79 years are in the African region, and only a quarter of these are taking medicines.

“Optimal blood pressure control is only attained in 11 per cent of patients on medication. Hypertension is an important risk factor for CVDs, mostly heart attack, stroke, and heart failure which account for a significant burden of premature mortality from NCDs.

“Hypertension is easy to diagnose, and there are safe and cost-effective treatments, including pharmacologic and behaviour change interventions. WHO has prioritized decentralized management and care for NCDs including management of hypertension, using the WHO Package of Essential Noncommunicable disease interventions for primary healthcare.

“In addition, the WHO has published a guidance on the technical specification for automated blood pressure monitoring devices to ensure improved access to accurate, affordable blood pressure devices which is often a significant barrier to proper medical care in low-resource settings.

“We need to regularly check our blood pressure and in case it is raised, adhere to medications as prescribed by the health provider,” she said.

Dr. Moeti noted that addressing hypertension in Africa requires a multi-faceted approach that involves individuals, communities, and governments working together.

INEC, Others Oppose Atiku’s Live Broadcast Request

0

The Presidential Election Petition Court on Thursday heard the application by the People’s Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to allow for the live televising of the ongoing election petition proceedings.

Parties to the petition adopted their processes and agreed that documents certified by the Independent Electoral Commission will be tendered without objections.

The PDP and Atiku through their counsel, Chris Uche, SAN, had prayed to the court for an order allowing the live broadcast of the proceeding due to the monumental importance of the case. Petition: Atiku Seek Live Broadcast of Proceedings

The petitioners argued that Nigerians being stakeholders have a right to have a real-time information about the election petition proceedings.

All the respondents to the petition namely INEC, the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and the All Progressives Congress vehemently opposed the application.

Among other reasons, they contended that the court is not a circus, a film house or a theatre but for serious and solemn business.

Counsel for APC, Lateef Fagbemi, asked the court not to concede the request to turn the court into a Big Brother electoral series.

After hearing arguments from all parties, the court stood down for five minutes.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Tinubu, and the Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, urged the court to dismiss the application by Atiku and PDP for a live broadcast of proceedings.

They argued that the relief sought by the applicants are not such that the court could grant it.

“With much respect to the petitioners, the motion is an abuse of the processes of this honourable court,” the respondents stated.

Besides describing the application as frivolous, they said the court was not a soapbox, stadium or theatre where the public should be entertained.

Through their team of lawyers, led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, they wondered why a petitioner would file an application to distract the court and waste its precious time.

They stated, in the counter affidavit, that the application relates to policy formulation of the court, which is outside the PEPC’s jurisdiction as constituted.

Italian Open 2023: Djokovic Loses To Rune in Rome

0

Novak Djokovic suffered his earliest exit at the Italian open since 2013 when he was beaten by rising Danish star Holger rune in the quarter-finals.

The Serb top seed, who turns 36 next week, was beaten 6-2 4-6 6-2 by 20-year-old rune on the Rome clay.

Djokovic was bidding for his seventh title in the Italian capital as he prepares for the French open on 28 may.

Seventh seed rune will play Norwegian fourth seed Casper Ruud in the semi-final.

Djokovic’s preparations for the French open have been disrupted by injury, having missed the recent Madrid open with an elbow problem and returning to the court in Rome as he looked to build up form and fitness.

The 22-time grand slam champion will have the opportunity at Roland Garros to move clear of Rafael Nadal in terms of the most men’s major titles of all time.

Following opening wins against Tomas martin Etcheverry, Grigor Dimitrov and British number one Cameron Norrie, Djokovic was going through the gears in Rome without yet finding his finest form.

There were signs of tension during a tetchy last-16 match against Norrie, before which Djokovic needed treatment for an injury that he was reluctant to discuss afterwards.

Djokovic, who will be replaced as world number one by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz next week, also needed a medical timeout early in the second set against rune.

While that was perhaps a factor behind his flat performance, the main reason for the defeat was he could not cope with the problems posed by the Dane.

Man City Maul Madrid To Reach Champions League Final

Manchester city produced a stunning performance to reach the champions league final as Bernardo Silva’s double put real Madrid to the sword in 4-0 thrashing, securing a 5-1 aggregate win for the English champions on Wednesday.

Eder Militao’s own goal and Julian Alvarez’s strike in stoppage time rounded off a memorable night for Pep Guardiola’s men as they moved to within three wins of matching Manchester United’s treble in 1998/99.

A fifth premier league title in six seasons appears a formality with city needing just three points from their final three games, while united await in the FA cup final on June 3.

Madrid dashed city’s dreams at this stage last season with a remarkable comeback from two goals down in the dying seconds of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Libya’s East-based Parliament Votes To Suspend PM

0

One of Libya’s two administrations has voted to suspend and investigate its prime minister, for failing to achieve his government’s objectives, the parliament’s spokesperson said.

Fathi Bashagha was prime minister of Libya’s eastern-based parliament, known as the House of Representatives, which operates in Tobruk.

Torn by civil conflict since 2011, Libya is divided between two rival governments, each backed by international patrons and numerous armed militias on the ground.

Mohamed Mansour, a spokesperson for Bashagha, said the former prime minister would soon publish an official statement regarding Tuesday’s decision.

In a recorded statement, Abdullah Belhaiq, the parliament spokesperson, criticized Bashagha for failing to deliver on the government’s pledge to enter the capital, Tripoli, the seat of the Western rival administration.

Bashagha, who was elected as prime minister in February 2022, tried to seat his government in the capital last May, arriving in Tripoli with a number of his Cabinet ministers.

Clashes soon broke out between rival militias, forcing the former air force pilot to retreat to the city of Sirte.

“A number of members of the House of Representatives asked in more than one session that the Prime Minister be investigated,” Belhaiq said.

Only a few details on Bashagha’s other alleged failings were provided.

The House of Representatives finance minister, Osama Hamada, took over Bashagha’s duties, even though Bashagha issued a statement to the parliament announcing that he was passing his duties to Deputy Prime Minister Ali Qatrani.

As no further details were given, the conflict between the two statements could not immediately be reconciled.

Despite Belhaiq’s explanation, Jalel Harchaoui, a Libya specialist and associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, believes the suspended premier may have out-served his usefulness to Khalifa Hifter, commander of the self-styled Libyan National Army, the dominant armed force in the country’s east and south.

Hifter and his family are seeking more influence in Tripoli and have been engaging in regular talks with Dbeibah’s nephew along with militia leaders from the west, Harchaoui said.

Both parliaments have agreed on a joint committee to draft electoral law for the vote, however, progress has since slowed.
