ECONOTES – Why Should Your Environment Be Safe

0

5 Reason Why your Environment should be safe:

●Improves Productivity

A germ-free and a clean facility provides an environment where employees can work with energy and enthusiasm.

You will see fewer people calling in sick.

The overall mood and drive of employees directly affects their output and having a fresh and tidy work environment does your business a world of good.

●Reduces Absenteeism

Viruses can rapidly spread throughout the workplace.

An employee with a case of the flu is bound to pass on germs to his colleagues.

Sick employees will stay away from work, which will affect your business and bottom-line in the long run.

●Projects A Good Image

A regularly sanitised workplace indicates a level of professionalism.

It also shows that you care for your employees and their well being.

Happy employees will give their best and promote the brand name of your product or business establishment.

●Reduces the Risk of Accidents

A well-kept floor free from spillages and smudgy substances will reduce mishaps.

A clean environment is also a safe place to work and improves the efficiency of employees.

●Improves Employee Satisfaction

Air pollutants are hazardous for your employees’ health.

They are likely to catch respiratory illnesses and pass them on to their workmates.

Exploring Table Mountain, South Africa

0

Table Mountain is an easily recognizable flat-topped mountain which is formed above the city of Cape Town, in the Republic of South Africa.

The most important and main feature is the level plateau which is approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) from one to other side, and at every edge of the mountain there are impressive cliffs.

As it is the most iconic landmark of South Africa, it is also the country’s most photographed attraction, where millions of tourists each year are ascending to the top with the cable car.

On the east side of Table Mountain is located the Devil’s Peak, and on the west side the mountain is surrounded by the Lion’s Head.

The cliffs of the main plateau are split by Platteklip Gorge (“Flat Stone Gorge”), which provides an easy and direct ascent to the summit and was the route taken by António de Saldanha on the first recorded ascent of the mountain in 1503.

Nonetheless, the Table Mountain is not just something for taking photos, but it is well worth to be discovered with other “secret” things.

There are about 2,200 species of plants found on Table Mountain and 1470 floral species.

Many of these plants and flowers are endemic to this mountain.

The magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens found on the eastern foot of the mountain, which are founded in 1913, and houses plants from different sides of the world.

Together with that, rock climbing, caving, hiking, mountain biking are the most popular extra activities one can do whenever in Cape Town.

Lightning Strike Creates Brand New Material Seen 1st Time on Earth

0

A lightning strike has produced a brand new phosphorus mineral, similar to that found on meteorites and in space.

The bolt created a chemical reaction in a rock, leading to what could be a member of a new mineral group, somewhere between space minerals and minerals found on Earth.

Similar materials have been found in meteorites and space but this is the first recorded instance of it being created on earth.

The find was made following the strike on a tree in New Port Richey, Florida, when a fulgurite, or fossilised lightning was sold by the landowners to a geoscientist who then had it analysed.

Fulgurites are formed by the high energy electrical discharge of lightning through rock, soil and sand.

The study, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment came about after Prof Pasek teamed up with Luca Bindi, a professor of mineralogy and crystallography at the University of Florence in Italy.

Together, the team set out to investigate unusual minerals that bear the element phosphorus, especially those formed by lightning, to better understand high-energy phenomena.

In wet environments, such as in Florida, iron will often accumulate and encrust tree roots.

In this case, not only did the lightning strike combust the iron on the tree roots, but it combusted the naturally occurring carbon in the tree as well.

The two elements led to a chemical reaction that created a fulgurite that looked like a metal ‘glob.’

Inside the fulgurite, a colourful, crystal-like matter revealed a material never before discovered.

Nigeria Bricklaying Association Emphasizes Need For Practical Knowledge

0

Members of the Nigeria Bricklaying Association (NBA), an umbrella body of artisans in the bricklaying profession have identified some factors causing incessant building collapse in the country.

Speaking at the annual National conference of the association in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, the artisans listed quackery, global economic impact, timidity of some bricklayers as well as greed among owners of building structures as some of the reasons for building collapse.

The annual national conference with the theme, “Let’s Eradicate Building Collapse in Nigeria”, had delegates from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Kwara states in attendance.

The state Chairmen of the Nigeria bricklaying association from Kwara, Lagos and Ogun states, Abdulraheem Ayenigba, Oyebamiji Dauda, Adeniyi Daniel, respectively, in separate interviews, emphasized the need for practical knowledge and acumen among other experts in the building profession.

The bricklayers as a group of artisans that bring out drawings of other building professionals into physical structures, said that building collapse was not rampant in structures made by the artisans in the olden days as against what is the case nowadays.

They also maintained that there are many quacks among bricklayers, building engineers while many lack integrity, referring to such as the bad eggs.

That’s one of the reasons the association exists with plan to make it spread across the country to train some people who would leave after about six months of working as labourers. These people then go about getting building contracts without adequate expertise. In this situation, building collapse is unavoidable.

The bricklayers also insists they have qualified bricklayers, adding that they organize refresher training among themselves on a regular basis.

They called on the government to accord the association due recognition and support, saying that they should be carried along in the scheme of things for more collaboration and assistance.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has advised the nation’s universities to explore private funding as an alternative to government interventions, saying it is a vital means of sustainability in academic institutions.

He made the call during the official opening of the auditorium donated to the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Public Health, University of Ibadan, by the Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation.
