U-17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets Head To Algiers For Crucial Quarter-Final Clash Against Burkina Faso

0

Thursday’s quarter-final clash is billed for Nelson Mandela Stadium, Algiers

After navigating their way out of the group stage at the ongoing U17 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets are off to Algiers where they will face Burkina Faso in the quarter-final stage.

Before now, the Eaglets have played all their games so far at the Stade Mohammed Hamlaoui, Constantine; winning two and losing one.

However, Thursday’s quarter-final clash billed for Nelson Mandela Stadium, Algiers, is very crucial as the winner of that contest will not only progress into the semi-final but also secure a berth in the U17 World Cup billed for later this year.

While many will be quick to label the Golden Eaglets as the favourites going into Thursday’s tie, Burkina Faso have proved to be a decent side as they also finished second in their group just like their Nigerian counterparts.

Eliminating Cameroon who are the defending champions is also another reason Burkina Faso will have to be taken seriously by Nduka Ugbade’s boys.

Already, the head coach of the Burkina Faso U17 team, Brahima Traore, is talking tough as he has underlined their readiness to qualify for the World Cup at the expense of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets.

While speaking ahead of the game, Traore said their objective is to qualify for the World Cup and also attempt to win the African crown.

“We had two objectives in this tournament; first to get to the semi-finals and then to fight for the title. We will prepare well for Nigeria to enable us to get to the semis and earn the World Cup ticket,” he said.

This will be the second time both sides clash in less than a year having first clashed at the WAFU B final in Cape Coast Ghana where Nigeria won.

EPL: Awoniyi’s Brace Lifts Forest Out Of Relegation

Awoniyi scored a brace for Forest that saw them leap out of the relegation place while Ndidi and Leicester now have a nervous end to the season after being thumped by Fulham in London

It was a compelling matchday in the English Premier League as relegation battlers Nottingham Forest and Everton got wins that took them out of the relegation zone while Leicester City, hammered away at Fulham, were dumped back in.

In all, 20 goals were scored in the three matches played on Monday.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored a brace in Forest’s nail-biting 4-3 win over Southampton; Alex Iwobi was directly involved in two goals and provided an assist as Everton thrashed Brighton 5-1 while Wilfred Ndidi came off the bench for Leicester City in their 5-3 loss in London.

Awoniyi in his 14th league start scored two quickfire goals in the 18th and 21st minutes to give Forest the start they craved at the City Ground. His first was a tap-in after good work down the right by Brennan Johnson and his second was a beauty as he swivelled away from Armel Bella-Kotchap before blasting a half-volley past Alex McCarthy.

A mistake from Morgan Gibbs-White in midfield saw Southampton reduce the lead through Carlos Alcaraz but Forest restored their two-goal lead on the cusp of halftime from the penalty spot, after Ainsley Maitland-Niles brought down Johnson. Gibbs-White scored to make it 3-1.

First-half substitute Lyanco headed Southampton’s second six minutes into the second half but Danilo made it 4-2 for Forest in the 73rd minute. But there was still time for more drama as James Ward-Prowse scored a penalty in the sixth minute of added time and another Southampton substitute Paul Onuachu almost earned an unlikely equaliser in the 11th minute of added time but Forest held on for all three points that saw them rise to 16th place with three games left in the season.

Alex Iwobi played a stellar role as Everton won just their second away match but what a win as the Toffees thumped Europe-chasing Brighton 5-1. Iwobi started the move for the first goal as his pass freed Dominic Calvert-lewin who found Abdoulaye Doucoure to score the first goal. The Nigerian was also involved in the third goal as his pass into the box led to Dwight McNeil getting in a shot that went in off Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.

He capped his bright performance with an assist for Everton’s fifth goal, scored by McNeil. Everton moved above Leicester City into 17th place with 32 points while Leicester City, who were hammered 5-3 by Fulham, are now 18th with 30 points.

Prioritize Healthcare Financing To Mitigate Brain-Drain, NMA tells FG

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) says prioritizing healthcare financing by all tiers of government is critical to reversing the brain drain in the health sector.

The association said this in a communique after its 3rd Annual General Conference and Delegates’ Meeting (AGC/DM) held in Jalingo, Taraba.

The communique was signed by the association’s president, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, and the Secretary-General, Dr. Jide Onyekwelu.

According to the communique, government at all levels should as a matter of urgency prioritize healthcare, show better political commitment to healthcare financing and pay better and competitive salaries.

It called for the provision of a better working environment, rejigging of the security architecture to protect lives and property, providing access to social amenities, and increased opportunities for doctors in Nigeria.

The communique also called on governments at all levels to urgently do the needful in addressing the various cases of violence against healthcare workers in Nigeria by declaring the act as a national emergency requiring robust action.

The communique rejected the House of Representatives bill sponsored by Hon. Ganiyu Johnson proposing to make it mandatory for fresh medical graduates to provide services to Nigeria for five years before getting full registration and license to practice or emigrate.

It said the association would deploy all legitimate means at its disposal to resist any form of enslavement of Nigerian Medical/Dental practitioners.

“Instead, the National Assembly should put pressure on government to address the ‘Push’ factors propelling brain drain which has led to the mass exodus of doctors and other health workers for greener pastures.

“The AGC/DM also called on the Federal Ministry of Health to jettison the idea of forced bonding of doctors via a policy directive as it is against natural justice, equity and good conscience, and shall be stoutly resisted by the NMA.

“It enjoined all Nigerian doctors and dentists to be conversant with the provisions of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act Cap M8, 2004 laws of Federation of Nigeria and abide by all the ethics guiding the profession.

The communique further admonished Nigerians, especially medical and dental practitioners, to be conversant with both national and international guidelines for organ donations, harvesting and transplantation including Assisted Reproduction Technology.

It urged Nigerians to know that the details of the guidelines also vary from one country to another.

Innoson has awarded a 3 million naira scholarship to one of the best UTME candidates from the 2023 exam.

Innoson Vehicles, a leading Nigerian automobile manufacturer, awarded indigent student Ejikeme Joy, an academic scholarship worth 3 million naira in a demonstration of its commitment to academic excellence.

Although, touted as the overall best-performing candidate in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for the 2023 academic year, a quick search online would show that Joy was just 3 marks shy of the highest score attained this year.

Joy, an indigene of Enugu State, and a resident of Nnewi with her Father, an Okada rider, thanked the Chairman for the scholarship, promising to do her best with the opportunity provided.

The student of Anglican Girls Secondary School in Nnewi, Anambra state, emerged way above her peers with a total score of 362 in English Language, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, broken down as 98%, 89%, 94%, and 81%, respectively.

Globally, indigent children are more likely to do poorly in school compared to their better-placed counterparts for a variety of reasons.

U.S therapist Pleads Guilty in Okagbare doping case

According to United States Authorities, A Texas therapist Eric Lira, faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to supplying performance-enhancing drugs to Olympic athletes, including banned Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare.

Lira, a “naturopathic” therapist based in the city of El Paso, is the first individual to be convicted under a new US law introduced in the wake of Russia’s state-backed Olympic doping scandals.

The 2020 law, named after Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, enables the American authorities to prosecute individuals involved in international doping fraud conspiracies.

Lira was found to have supplied drugs to Okagbare in the build-up to the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Okagbare, who was subsequently banned from the sport for 11 years, was expelled from the Tokyo Games just before the women’s 100m semi-finals.

It had emerged that she had tested positive for human growth hormone in an out-of-competition test in Slovakia before the start of the global showpiece.

US Attorney Damian Williams said on Monday, after Lira pleaded guilty in a federal court in Manhattan, that the case was a “watershed moment for international sport”.

“Lira provided banned performance-enhancing substances to Olympic athletes who wanted to corruptly gain a competitive edge,” he said.

“Such craven efforts to undermine the integrity of sport subverts the purpose of the Olympic Games – which is to showcase athletic excellence through a level playing field.

“Lira’s efforts to pervert that goal will not go unpunished.”

People Exposed to Aeroplane Noise Risk Depression, Cancer – Study

0

People exposed to even moderate levels of aircraft noise are less likely to receive the minimum recommended amount of sleep each night, according to new United State study.

The researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health said sleeping less than seven hours each night predisposes an individual to the risk of depression and non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

Published in the journal of Environmental Health Perspectives, the study discovered that people who were exposed to aeroplane noise at levels as low as 45 dB were more likely to sleep less than seven hours per night. The dB (decibel units) is used to measure noise levels and intensity.

According to the researchers, many people are not aware of the health risk of aircraft noise.

The researchers stated that most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night for healthy functioning.

They explained, “Sleep is essential to overall health and well-being, including daily physical and mental functioning, and a lack of adequate sleep can lead to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other health conditions.

“This study is the first large-scale analysis of aircraft noise and sleep duration that accounts for the disruptive effects of multiple environmental exposures in communities, such as greenery and light at night.

“Despite how common exposure to noise from aircraft is for many people, little is known about the health effects of aircraft noise.

The study lead author Matthew Bozigar, assistant professor of epidemiology, and study senior author Junenette Peters, associate professor of environmental health at the university said, “This study helps us understand the potential health pathways by which aircraft noise may act, such as through disrupted sleep. “

Bozigar and colleagues examined aeroplane noise exposure and self-reported sleep disturbance among more than 35,000 participants living around 90 of the major US airports.

The participants were selected from the Nurses’ Health Study, an ongoing, prospective study of US female nurses who have completed biennial questionnaires since 1976.

The team examined aircraft noise levels every five years from 1995 to 2015, focusing on two measurements: a nighttime estimate (Lnight) that captures aeroplane noise occurring when people sleep, and a day-night estimate (DNL) that captures the average noise level over 24 hours and applies a 10 dB adjustment for aircraft noise occurring at night when background noise is low.

Giving insight into the study, Bozigar said, “After accounting for a range of factors, including demographics, health behaviours, comorbidities, and environmental exposures such as greenery and light at night, the results showed that the odds of sleeping less than seven hours rose as aeroplane noise exposure increased.

“We found surprisingly strong relationships for particular subgroups that we are still trying to understand. For instance, there was a relatively strong signal between aircraft noise and both dimensions of disrupted sleep, short sleep duration and poor sleep quality, near major cargo airports.

“There is likely more going on to this story, as cargo operations tend to use larger, older, heavily laden, and therefore noisier aircraft that often fly through the nighttime hours.

“And the quantity of cargo shipped by air has been steadily increasing over the last couple of decades, possibly linked to more e-commerce. If the trends continue, it could mean more aircraft noise impacts to more groups of people.”

A public health expert, Dr. Yusuf Lapite, told Newsmen in an interview that noise pollution was associated with physical and mental health problems.

“Noise has effects that include annoyance, mental health, and also can cause ear impairment.

“Noise pollution can increase stress, fuel other mental health issues, and also trigger chronic health problems like high blood pressure,” he said.

Austrian Billionaire’s Jewels Seen Fetching Over $150M At Auction

0

The 700-piece private jewellery collection of the late Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten, the world’s largest and most valuable collection of its kind to come to auction, could sell for more than $150 million, Christie’s said on Monday.

Some of its most spectacular pieces include the 90-carat ‘Briolette of India’ diamond necklace by Harry Winston, and the ‘Sunrise Ruby’ and diamond ring by Cartier that is worth up to an estimated $20 million.

The collection, acquired between the early 1970s until Horten’s death last year, is also comprised of more than 100 Bulgari pieces.

Horten’s collection is set to exceed the record sales at Christie’s for Elizabeth Taylor’s collection in 2011 and the Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence auction in 2019, the only two jewellery collections to have garnered more than $100 million.

Christie’s said the estate proceeds of the auctions would go towards the Heidi Horten Foundation, which supports charitable causes including in the fields of health care and child protection.

Before agreeing to auction the collection, Christie’s said it had considered the business practices of Horten’s late first husband, German department store tycoon Helmut Horten, who during the Nazi era “purchased Jewish businesses that were sold under duress.”

“What’s important is that we have been completely transparent,” Rahul Kadakia, international head of jewellery at Christie’s, said.

“We are selling this collection in its identity with the name Horten. It’s not being sold as an anonymous collection.”

Christie’s said it would make a “significant contribution” from its final proceeds to Jewish organisations to advance Holocaust research and education. It did not disclose the amount.

“Of course we cannot erase history,” said Max Fawcett, head of the jewellery department at Christie’s in Geneva.

“But we hope that the funds from this sale will go to do good in the future.”

Christie’s will auction 400 pieces in Geneva on Wednesday and Friday and hold an online sale. It will hold a second online sale for the remainder of the collection in November.

In a post-match comment Traore told newsmen  “When we conceded the first goal, we just changed our system and tactics to be more attacking. We put pressure on them and scored the two goals,”.

“We worked hard and had a good fighting spirit. We went 1-0 down but never gave up. We had confidence in ourselves and I am happy with the desire shown by the players.”

He added that his target was to clinch a World Cup ticket and was confident his boys can beat Nigeria.

“We had two objectives in this tournament; first to get to the semi-finals and then to fight for the title. We will prepare well for Nigeria to enable us to get to the semis and earn the World Cup ticket.”

Burkina Faso will face a tough task when they play Nigeria in Algiers on Thursday.

NMA Offers Free medical Treatment to Persons in Taraba

The Nigerian Medical Association has provided free medical treatment to no fewer than 1,150 persons in Taraba State.

The free medical treatment includes surgeries, dental, and ophthalmological services, mass deworming for children, screening for Systemic Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Human Immune Virus, viral hepatitis B & C with screening & treatment for cervical cancer.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the association’s President and Secretary General, Dr. Uche R. Ojinmah and Dr. Jide Onyekwelu, respectively on Monday and made available to the press.

The free medical service was carried out during the 63rd Annual General Conference and Delegates’ Meeting of the association held in Jalingo, the state capital, between April 30 and May 7, 2023.

There was also a scientific session for the presentation of research papers.

The AGC/DM was preceded by several humanitarian, social and advocacy-oriented activities including the 2nd Dr. Stella Adadevoh Free Medical Outreach to Mutum Biyu in Gassol Local Government Area of the state.

The association observed that Nigeria is heading for a catastrophic Human Resource health crisis if the current rate of migration of Medical and Dental Practitioners to overseas “Japa syndrome” is not reversed.

It further noted, “as unacceptable the recent proposed obnoxious Bill by the House of Representative member representing Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency II, Lagos State; Hon. Ganiyu Johnson which passed second reading at the National Assembly, seeking to amend the Medical and Dental Practitioner Act 2004 to prescribe a five-year mandatory service for Nigerian -trained doctors before granting their full licenses as unfair, irritable and highly provocative to the tenets of the international human rights law, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and civil liberty.”

The NBA sees the Bill as an attempt at modern-day “slavery”.

It, however, urged Medical and Dental Practitioners to pay serious attention to the laws and ethics of the medical profession such as professional misconduct, negligence, confidentiality, organ donation, reproductive technologies, abortion, medical research, informed consent, doctor-patient relationship, and clinical trials, as a way of strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
