Nigeria ranks 180 out of 183 Countries in Obesity Preparedness

0

The World Obesity Atlas 2023 report published by the World Obesity Federation has shown that Nigeria is least prepared to deal with the rising Non-Communicable Diseases and obesity globally.

The report shows that Nigeria ranks 180 out of 183 countries on the NCDs-Obesity Preparedness Rankings.

The ranking system takes account of countries’ current health system responses to the NCDs and their commitment to the implementation of obesity prevention policies.

The report shows marked variations in preparedness across national income levels and geographical regions. For example, the average preparedness ranking for low-income countries is just 154/183 compared to 29/183 for high-income countries. All 10 of the most prepared countries are in Europe, while eight of the 10 least prepared countries are in the African region.

Other countries least prepared to deal with NCDs-obesity are Niger ranking 183, Papua New Guinea 182, Somalia 181, Central African Republic 179, Burkina Faso 178, Guinea Bissau 177, Burundi 176, Tokelau 175, and Gambia 174.

Meanwhile, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, France, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Ireland, and Belgium are listed to be most prepared to deal with obesity and NCDs.

The trends suggest a gradual rise in prevalence for all groups over the period 2020 to 2035, but the pace of change for lower-income countries and especially the lowest-income countries could well increase relative to the last two decades.

Lower-middle-income countries with large populations, such as India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Nigeria may quite quickly follow the pattern of upper-middle-income countries such as Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey in seeing a rapid rise in obesity prevalence, especially among children and adolescents, the report noted.

The projected trend in the prevalence of obesity in Nigerian adults with obesity by 2035 is 24 per cent.

It also showed that the annual increase in adult and child obesity from 2020 to 2035 is very high at 4.9 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively.

It said the overweight impact on the national GDP is projected to be 0.9 per cent by 2035.

The World Obesity Federation’s research shows that people living with obesity face some barriers to care as they often cannot get a diagnosis (because obesity may not be classified as a disease) or access the treatment they need from knowledgeable and trained health professionals, and are forced to incur substantial out-of-pocket expenses to receive appropriate medical treatment.

By 2035, the economic impact of overweight and obesity is estimated to be over $370 billion a year in low and lower-middle-income countries alone.

Commenting on the report, the Director of Science at the World Obesity Federation, Rachel Jackson-Leach said “If we do not act now, we are on course to see significant increases in obesity prevalence over the next decade. The greatest increases will be seen in low and lower-middle income countries, where scarce resources and lack of preparedness will create a perfect storm that will negatively impact people living with obesity the most.”

Sign BSC\HND Dichotomy Bill into Law, Lecturers urge Buhari

0

Polytechnic lecturers in Nigeria has urged President Buhari to sign into law before leaving office on May 29, the BSC\HND Dichotomy Bill.

The Bill is designed to end the disparity between the holders of first degree( BSC) and higher national diploma(HND) certificates in the country.

In Nigeria’s employment policy, particularly in the civil service, both the entry and termination levels for the holders of first-degree certificates awarded by universities differ from that of the HND holders, with the former category in a far better advantage.

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Anderson Ezeibe, made the call in an exclusive interview urging that President Buhari must not leave the office without signing the BSC\HND dichotomy Bill into Law.

He said should Buhari leave office without signing the Bill into law, which has been before him for almost two years after it passage in June 2021 by the National Assembly, would not only be a counterproductive exercise but a monumental waste of public resources and time.

According to him, president Buhari, not signing the Bill into law is invariably meant that the document will be thrown into the dustbin, except the next National Assembly members would be interested and consider it for a fresh debate and then passage to the next president.

Another 25 Nigerian nurses face forgery charges in US

0

Following high-end investigations, the Texas Board of Nursing, United States, has announced that it has charged no fewer than 75 nurses to court over issues bordering around falsification of certificates.

On the list posted on the website of the board, 43 of the names were identified as nurses of Nigerian origin.

Earlier in February 18 Nigerian nurses in the US were reportedly charged with certificate forgery.

The US authorities had said that  list would be updated continuously as the board received additional information about “the fraudulent diploma/transcript scheme.”

Recent report revealed that the list had grown longer with the number of Nigerian rising from the previous 18 to 43.

The investigations tagged, ‘Operation Nightingale,’ was described as a multi-state coordinated law enforcement action involving the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, and was launched on January 25, 2023, to arrest individuals engaged in a scheme to sell false and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts.

Commenting on the matter, the board said, “The board has filed formal charges against the following nurses for fraudulently obtaining educational credentials. The board is authorised to file formal charges against a nurse if probable cause exists that the nurse has committed an act listed in Tex. Occ. Code §301.452(b) or that violates other laws. See Tex. Occ. Code §301.458. Further, formal charges are publicly available. See Tex. Occ. Code §301.466(b).

“Please note that formal charges are not a final disciplinary action, and a nurse is permitted to work, as a nurse, while formal charges are pending.

According to reports, the Texas Board of Nursing had charged the health workers at the District Court for the Southern District of Florida, saying the nurses allegedly participated in a wire fraud scheme that created an illegal licensing and employment shortcut for aspiring nurses.

According to the charge documents, the scheme fraudulently sells nursing degree diplomas and transcripts obtained from accredited Florida-based nursing schools to individuals seeking licences and jobs as registered nurses and licensed practical/vocational nurses.

A special agent in charge of the investigations, Omar Aybar, said the alleged selling and purchasing of nursing diplomas and transcripts to willing but unqualified individuals is a crime that potentially endangers the health and safety of patients and insults the honourable profession of nursing.

The overall scheme involved the distribution of more than 7,600 fake nursing diplomas issued by three South Florida-based nursing schools: Siena College in Broward County, Fl; Palm Beach School of Nursing in Palm Beach County, Fl; Sacred Heart International Institute in Broward County.

Aruna Quadri Escapes Early Scare At WTT Singapore Smash

Quadri Aruna

Africa number one, Quadri Aruna, on Sunday escaped an early scare in the men’s singles of the WTT Singapore Smash taking place at the Singapore Sports Hub’s OCBC Arena.

Set up against a familiar opponent in Germany’s Ruwen Filus and that match was a classic battle between attack and defence but it was Aruna that scraped over the line, taking the match 3-2 (14-12, 6-11, 11-3, 6-11, 11-9).

For the two veterans of the global scene, it was always going to be a nail-biter. Going into the match the head-to-head stood at one win each.

But that was only part of the story. It was a topsy-turvy fight for dominance as the duo exchanged games right to the very end.

The deciding game came with all the drama with the German veteran taking a commanding lead at the change of ends.

It was then that the tides reversed and fortune went back in the way of the Nigerian superstar.

The win ensured that Aruna roared his way to the round of 32.

“It was 5-1 (to him), and then 7-2, and suddenly I won five points in a row.

That was a very good comeback and I was focusing because six or seven years ago I experienced almost the same situation against him and I knew it was not over until it’s over.

“I kept my cool, I kept playing and, in the end, he made a few errors and that made a big difference,” Aruna admitted.

The African champion added: “It’s not just that he was a tough opponent, we were together in the same team (in the German Bundesliga) for about two years and he knows me very well.

“I believe it was 50-50 before the game and as we have seen, it was 11-9 in the fifth game.”

With the coin flip going Aruna’s way, he will now face French teenager Alexis Lebrun who edged out China’s Yuan Licen in the round of 64.

The first African casualty at the Singapore Smash was Egypt’s Omar Assar who was beaten by Portugal’s Tiago Apolonia 3-0 in the round of 64 while his compatriots – Hana Goda and Mariam Alhodaby also tasted defeat against their German and Japanese opponents.

Alhodaby, the 2021 African champion was set up against world number six and Japanese national champion Hina Hayata and it was the Asian star that won 3-1 (11-3, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6).

Apart from Aruna, the other surviving African in the competition is Dina Meshref of Egypt who edged out home girls with a 3-1 win in the first round.

Real Madrid To Take Legal Action Against Barcelona For Refereeing Scandal

0

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior (left) reacts as he receives a yellow card during a match between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid will join the complaint filed on Friday by Spanish prosecutors against Barcelona and two of the LaLiga club’s ex-presidents over alleged payments to a company owned by a senior refereeing official to influence match results, the club said on Sunday.

The European and Spanish soccer champions called an urgent board meeting to discuss alleged attempts by arch rivals Barcelona to influence referees and decided to take legal action for what they called “serious accusations” by prosecutors.

“Real Madrid express their deep concern about the seriousness of the facts and reiterate their full confidence in the action of the justice and have agreed that, in defence of their legitimate interests, they will join the complaint as soon as the judge takes up the case,” the club said in a official statement.

Barcelona allegedly paid more than 7.3 million euros (S$10.49 million) between 2001 and 2018 to firms owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, who was vice-president of the refereeing committee of the Spanish football association from 1993-2018.

Prosecutors allege that under a secret agreement and “in exchange for money”, Negreira favoured Barcelona “in the decisions taken by referees in the games played by the club, as well as in the results of the competitions”.

A senior Barcelona official told Reuters on Friday that the club had expected the prosecutors’ complaint and described it as “nothing more than an absolutely preliminary investigative hypothesis”.

The official said the club “will fully cooperate with the investigation by all means necessary” and “reiterate that they have never bought any referee nor have tried to influence any official’s decisions”.

In a statement last month, Barca denied wrongdoing, saying they had simply paid an external consultant who supplied them with “technical reports related to professional refereeing”, calling it “a common practice among professional football clubs”.

The complaint focuses on the 2.9 million euros paid between 2014 and 2018 and alleges that Barcelona – with the help of former presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu – reached a “confidential verbal agreement” with Negreira.

It accuses the club, Rosell, Bartomeu, Negreira and two other former Barcelona officials of corruption in sports, unfair administration and falsehood in mercantile documents.

NFF, Nigerians Mourn Passing Of Former Super Falcons’ Coach, Ismaila Mabo

0

The Nigeria Football Federation has joined entire football family to express deep sorrow over the death on Monday morning of former Nigeria defender and an accomplished Head Coach of the Senior Women’s National Team, Super Falcons, Pa Ismaila Mabo. He was 80.

Reports said Mabo died in the early hours of Monday after a protracted illness.

“The death of Pa Ismaila Mabo came to me as a huge shock. Again, we have lost a great man and an accomplished trainer-of-trainers in the Nigeria Football fraternity, and my heart goes out to his immediate family and the other loved ones he has left behind.

“Mabo laid down a big marker for other coaches when he steered the Super Falcons to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the USA in 1999. Yet, he was simple, humble and humane. We will miss him, but we are consoled that he left giant footprints in the sands of time and pray that God will grant him eternal rest,” President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau said on Monday.

A gifted central defender, Ismaila Mabo started as a schoolboy international with the Nigeria academicals team that broke the chain of Ghana’s constant whipping of Nigerian teams, when they defeated Ghana’s academicals 1-0 in Accra on 13th February 1966. It was the first time any Nigerian team would defeat a Ghanaian football team on Ghanaian soil.

Six days later, the Nigerian boys again defeated their Ghanaian counterparts 2-1 in Lagos. His team-mates included Peter ‘Baby’ Anieke, Tony ‘World 2’ Igwe, the illustrious Sam Garba Okoye and Eyo Essien.

After that accomplishment, Mabo joined Mighty Jets of Jos and was part of that club’s famous squad of the late 1960s and 1970s. He also featured for the senior national team, making his debut in a 1972 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Congo in Brazzaville on 22nd November 1970.

Mabo would later go into coaching, and was in the dug-out as Head Coach when the Super Falcons defeated North Korea 3-2, lost to USA and defeated Denmark 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999. The team stretched Brazil at that quarter-final stage before losing by a golden goal in extra time in Washington DC on July 1, 1999.
