170,000 Polling Units’ Results uploaded on IReV – INEC

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday said over 170,000 polling unit results of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections have been uploaded on its Result Viewing Portal.

INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye, stated this on a Television’s Programme, monitored by LN247.

“As you are aware, we are reconfiguring the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems for purposes of the governorship and state assembly elections, and any BVAS that was used for the Presidential and National Assembly elections that do not push to the accreditation backend, the data relating to the conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections will not be reconfigured.

“In fact, the BVAS will not allow itself to be reconfigured or reset if the entire data is not pushed to the accreditation backend.

“I’m sure that by Tuesday when we hope to complete the resettling of the BVAS for the purposes of the governorship and state assembly elections, the results in all the places where elections were conducted would have been pushed to the accreditation backend.”

Okoye said every Nigerian has the constitutional and legal right to protest. However, he said no political party will be allowed to look into the brain of the BVAS or the biometrics of voters.

He noted that INEC is the regulator of political parties and the commission won’t abdicate its core responsibility to aggrieved political parties.

He said the court judgement that voters could use their temporary voter cards to vote is not applicable for all Nigerians but for the individuals who went to court.

The INEC commissioner also blamed political parties for making polling units “inaccessible” for voters, leading to low turnout at the last polls.

He said INEC learned some “valuable lessons” in the presidential and National Assembly elections, which would be used in the governorship and state assembly polls.

He said serious efforts are being made to rectify challenges with the IReV portal ahead of the March 18 polls, adding that the ICT department of the commission knows what to do if there are issues with the uploading of polling unit results on the IReV portal in March 18 polls.

He said political parties deployed more polling unit agents than the number of officials deployed by the Commission and so they monitored their results per polling unit.

The INEC commissioner said, “The Electoral Act 2022 makes it clear that every registered political party in conjunction with their candidates have the right to send agents to every polling unit in Nigeria.

“The PDP as a political party deployed a total of 176,588 polling agents. The Labour Party deployed a total of 134,874 polling agents. The NNPP deployed a total of 176,200 while the APC deployed a total of 176,223.

“The commission deployed to 176,666 polling units. So, the political parties deployed more agents to the polling units than the number of polling units that opened. What that means is that each political party got a copy of Form EC 8 which is the polling unit result sheet which is the result sheet that is uploaded into the IReV portal,” he added.

Morocco May Replace Ukraine In Spain And Portugal’s 2030 FIFA World Cup Bid

0

Morocco is set to replace Ukraine in the preliminary joint bid that Spain and Portugal announced last year.

Unfolding events have made Ukraine, an unlikely joint candidate with the Iberian penisular countries of Portugal and Spain.

In what could have been the most expansive World Cup in terms of space between venues.

Ukraine is almost 3,000 kilometres north-east of Spain. In contrast, Morocco is separated from Spain by a 14 kilometre Strait of Gibraltar.

The 2030 World Cup is a milestone, marking the 100 years since the competition started.

The on-going war in Ukraine makes it an unlikely desitination for World Cup as even if the conflicts end, the country will need a huge amount of money to rebuild.

Besides, the Ukraine football federation recently has been in tumoil.

There are  issues at the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF)  whose President Andriy Pavelko was arrested in November last year for allegedly misusing international aid funds.

A court in Kyiv suspended Pavelko for one month until March 17, but the UAF insisted he would retain his position after filing an appeal.

Ukraine had increasingly been viewed as unlikely to be in a position to stage matches at the 2030 World Cup.

Morocco appears to enjoy good relations with FIFA, stepping in to host the men’s Club World Cup in February at less than two months’ notice.

They enjoyed a historic run to the semi-finals of last year’s World Cup in Qatar, knocking out both Spain and Portugal.

A host for the 2030 World Cup is set to be decided at next year’s FIFA Congress.

A South American bid including Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile is set to rival the Iberian bid, and Saudi Arabia hopes to lead a joint proposal with Egypt and Greece.

UEFA backed the Spanish and Portuguese bid when Ukraine joined it last year, but Greek involvement in a Saudi bid could appeal to some European nations.

Club Football: Makes History After PSG’s Latest Win

0

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Lionel Messi, on Saturday became the first player to reach 300 club assists.

Messi achieved the feat after setting up a last-minute winner for teammate Kylian Mbappe in their 2-1 French Ligue 1 win against Brest on Saturday.

Incidentally, Messi, back in 2005, provided his first of many club career assists to Barcelona legend Ronaldinho wearing the number 30 jersey.

However, in 2023, the Argentina captain provided his 300th milestone club career assist to Mbappe, wearing the same jersey number.

Mbappe beat the offside trap to collect a through ball from Messi in the 90th minute and rounded goalkeeper Marco Bizot to slot it into an empty net as PSG defeated Brest at the Stade Francis-Le Blé.

Messi, a former Barcelona captain, now has 13 Ligue 1 assists this season and has 31 assists across all competitions for PSG.

Documentaries: UK Based Moor Sportz Taking African Stars To The World

0

It was cream de la cream night gathering of sports journalists, veterans and administrators at the prestigious Sportshaq at Adamu Orisa Crescent, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria as a UK based sports Production and Communication Company Moor Sportz brought home ‘Project African Stars’ – to showcase and celebrate African sports legends and heroes both at home and in the Diaspora.

Speaking at the unveiling of the concept, the Chief Executive Officer of Moor Sportz, Kehinde Fagbuaro stated that over the years, the stories of African sports men and women who had made tremendous impact globally had been told from the perspectives of Europeans and outsiders, a development he said was not in depth enough to capture their real essence.

Fielding questions as to what inspired the concept of showcasing the African sports legends from the African perspective, Mr Fagbuaro said, “We saw the gap in the sports industry especially in Africa. Most of our stories, the story of the athletes, the icons and legends of African heritage both in Africa and in the Diaspora are being told by the Europeans and outsiders for us and the gap is always there and there’s not enough in-depth research about these stories.

Chief Executive Officer of Moor Sportz, Kehinde Fagbuaro explaining a point.

“So we want to come in because I personally live in the United kingdom but I was born here. So I can stand as a bridge because I live between here and in the Diaspora. I know the content of what is happening in Africa, I know the content of what is happening in Europe, so I can be a bridge to bring a proper perspective to the stories of the African heritage.

“We are very specific, Athletes of African heritage both at home and in the Diaspora, we want to promote them. So, by the launch today, we have exposed the intent, it will cover all sports. We have mentioned some of the athletes we want to cover, Athletes like Tobi Amusan, Segun Odegbami, things that people do not know about them which we want people to know.

“For instance, I did a documentary about the first African to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Abebe Bikila ran barefooted in the Olympics and won the first gold medal at the Olympics for Africa. People want to know why Bikila ran barefooted. Was he just a jungle man who could not wear his fine shoes? People want to know. We researched and found out that he actually had a pair of shoe that was hurting his legs and he tried to train with it but discovered that he could not maximize it and the time was too short to get the proper shoes for the contest, he had to run barefooted.

“When I wrote that story, it started attracting a lot of attention. So, there are a lot of things that are behind the scene that are not common in daily journals, in day to day news that we go behind the scene to research. So, that is the essence of what we are doing, celebrate the African essence both at home and in the Diaspora.”

On his part, a renowned sports administrator, Dr Mumuni Alao commended Moor Sportz for the initiative and expressed excitement.

Veteran journalist Mumuni Alao speaking at the occasion with another veteran Administrator Godwin Dudu Orumen at the backgrounf

“I’m excited about the originality of the concept, the idea. I like the creativity and as far as telling the African story is concern, we have not even scratched the surface. So there’s a very big nitch in that area which I’m very excited about and I’m happy that it is not just a Nigerian project, it’s an African project which means there’s a lot of potential content. So,

“I’m excited about the prospect in terms of the kind of content that we will be receiving, that’s no one. Number two, because today’s world is more video-centric. When you talk about content now, I’m a specialist in writing,” he stated.

Also speaking, ex-international, Chief Segun Odegbami commended Moor Sportz for the initiative and promised to support whenever called upon.

His words, “Well, I’m excited about the prospects; I have seen glimpses of the future of what this organization wants to do and I believe that if it is done the way they said it will be done, then, we are in for some true entertainment in football.

“Beyond the entertainment, there’s also the documentation, the historical perspective and when you combine history with entertainment, it’s a winner! So, I just want to use this opportunity to congratulate More Sports and to wish them the very best of luck. As much as we possibly can, we shall render our support.”

Nigerian Doctors abroad face Discrimination – MDCN

0

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has advised newly inducted foreign-trained doctors to consider practising in the country, instead of travelling abroad for greener pastures.

The MDCN said many of the doctors who have migrated to other countries are currently regretting their actions, as they face discrimination.

The Registrar of the council, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, said this on Thursday during the induction ceremony of 469 medicine graduates and eight dentistry graduates.

He said, “People continue to say that they want to emigrate. If you go out, have a mission. You can avail yourself of the best facilities there, in terms of training. But always remember that there is no other country better than your own, and think of coming back. Please, the issue of ‘Japa’ won’t do anybody any good.

“Some of those abroad are already regretting that they ought to have come back. Later in your career over there, when you start experiencing some kind of discrimination, you will know that you have succeeded in wasting your time. We advise that when you go there, always have it in mind that you need to come back home and render care to your people.”

Sanusi also cautioned the newly inducted doctors against participating in medical associations’ strikes.

He said while doctors have the constitutional right of freedom of association, they are not regarded as members of the Association of Resident Doctors, going by the council.

He said, “By the council policy, you are not members of the ARD. However, by the 1999 Constitution, there is the freedom of association, and you can join. But if they call for a strike, don’t join them because your programme is structured and uninterrupted in each of the postings. The moment you interrupt, you will start all over at no cost to the government. That is the implication.

“Again, during the strike, the accident and emergency (unit) must be manned with a duty roster so that any patient in need of your services can be given first aid and asked to go and sort themselves out somewhere else. It is not for you to entirely close down the health facility to the public.”

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who was represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics of the Ministry, Dr. Ngozi Azodo, lamented the mass exodus of doctors and urged the inducted doctors to render selfless services to patients.

“When people come to you in their most vulnerable state, they know you can help them. Don’t exploit them. Commit today to help your patient, society, and community to the best of your ability for the benefit of humanity. Doctors must care for themselves because if not, they will not be able to care for the rest of humanity.”

Lagos Train Crash: LASUTH received 102 victims – CMD

0

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, has said it received 102 victims of the PWD Train-Bus crash for treatment.

The Chief Medical Director, LASUTH, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, who said the experience was overwhelming, narrated that early Thursday morning, around 8 am, his hospital received 85 victims at once, adding that the institution embarked on open space treatment also known as triage, which was world best practice in mass emergencies.

He explained that triage was the option because the hospital only had 30-bed spaces at the emergency unit with patients.

Fabamwo, in an interview with our correspondent, said six deaths had been recorded, adding that six victims were also operated upon.

He said, “As concerns our 85 victims, two died on the spot at the accident scene, three of them died while we were trying to resuscitate them because they had very serious injuries, one of them who was bleeding internally that we took to the theatre didn’t make it. So, four died in the hospital making a total of 6 fatalities now. As we speak, another 17 causalities have been brought to us, making a total of 102 casualties. ”

A statement by the Lagos State Ministry of Information stated that a triage centre was set up by the management of LASUTH by erecting an emergency canopy.

“Patients were triaged into mild, moderate, and severe groups. Those with life-threatening injuries were immediately transferred to operating theatres, for stabilisation and fracture repair by specialists in these areas within LASUTH,” it read.

Some of the victims were also taken to some of the hospitals around LASUTH so as to reduce the pressure on the institution.

It further read, “Moderate cases like simple fractures and lacerations were transferred to the nearest General Hospitals such as Gbagada General Hospital, Orile Agege General Hospital, Lagos Island General Hospital and the Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate. Mild patients were admitted to the surgical ward at LASUTH. Emergency blood transfusion service was also activated by our Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service Agency and we were able to mobilise blood and blood products from our blood donors and storage to stabilise pre, during, and post-operation patients and procedures.”

Triage Centre for Emergency

A victim of the accident, Toyin Lasisi, who works with Dynamic Recoveries, Alausa, said she joined the bus at Ikotun bus stop around 6 am.

Lasisi, who sustained injuries on her legs and arms after jumping out of the bus, revealed that she was treated at LASUTH with three packs of drips.

“I joined the bus at 6 am and the driver was the regular driver of the bus, so this was not the first time he is driving on that road. I think it was just a mistake for not waiting to allow the train to pass.

Rescuers help Train-bus crash victims

“I have been treated and I was given three drips. People also came out en mass to rescue us; the ambulance also arrived on time. I jumped out of the bus immediately after the accident happened, it was so much pain but some people couldn’t jump out.”
