One World’s Most Famous Steam Trains Driven By All Female Crew

0

One of the world’s most famous steam trains, the Flying Scotsman, has been driven by an all female crew on the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) to mark International Women’s Day.

It was crewed entirely by a female footplate team made up of ELR volunteers and a Network Rail driver.

The event celebrated the role of women in rail and aimed to encourage more women into engineering careers.

Volunteer Charlotte Instance working on board said it was “a real privilege”.

“To be on the greatest steam engine of all, it’s such an honour,” Ms Instance, who was the locomotive cleaner for the all female crew, said.

“I started about a year and a half ago, and that’s where everyone starts off on the railway as a cleaner.

“That means not just cleaning the actual engine itself, but getting in underneath, getting the ash out of the pan and smoke pops out and then learning how to fire.

“So to be here today, to be on the greatest steam engine of all, it’s such an honour.”

The crew was made up of three volunteers from the ELR, Linda Henderson, Charlotte Instance and Steph Elwood, and driver Beth Furness from Network Rail.

U.K. Weather: Snow Causes Disruption Across West Midlands

0

Widespread snowfall is disrupting travel across the West Midlands, after warnings were issued.

Motorists are reporting difficult driving conditions, with multiple bus routes terminating early or taking diversions.

In north Staffordshire, a Met Office amber weather warning was issued for heavy snowfall of up to 40cm (16in) in places.

National Highways has asked drivers to avoid travelling if possible.

Other parts of the West Midlands region are under a yellow warning, with ice and snow making conditions dangerous.

West Mercia Police said it was dealing with several accidents caused by the weather, and advised motorists to “adjust driving to suit the conditions”.

Traffic Bromsgrove tweeted a video of conditions in Lickey, describing Monument Lane and other routes around high ground as “treacherous”.

Transport for West Midlands advised passengers to check for diversions and cancellations before travelling, with some minor routes deemed unsafe

National Express West Midlands reported service disruptions around Birmingham and the Black Country, with routes terminating early or following diversions.

Landflight Buses, which operates services around Solihull, tweeted it would be sticking to main roads due to some minor routes becoming unsafe.

Stagecoach Midlands also said it was also diverting routes between Banbury and Stratford upon Avon.

Transport for West Midlands advised passengers to check with operators before setting out.

Scientists Says Oceans Littered With 171 Trillion Plastic Pieces

0

More than 171 trillion pieces of plastic are now estimated to be floating in the world’s oceans, according to scientists.

Plastic kills fish and sea animals and takes hundreds of years to break down into less harmful materials.

The concentration of plastics in the oceans has increased from 16 trillion pieces in 2005, data suggests.

It could nearly triple by 2040 if no action is taken, scientists warn.

Last week, nations signed the historic UN High Seas treaty aiming to protect 30% of the oceans.

To produce this new estimate, a group of scientists analysed records starting in 1979 and added recent data collected on expeditions that trawl the seas with nets to collect plastics.

The plastic counted in nets is then added to a mathematical model to produce a global estimate.

Exploring Ben’s Cave, Bahamas

0

Ben’s Cave is an underwater cave that is a popular tourist attraction, located in the Lucayan National Park, on the island of Grand Bahama, within the northwestern part of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

As the park has a land area of some 16 hectares (40 acres), it contains also an underwater cave system where some tunnels are still uncharted and dangerous.

Being part of this underwater cave system, Ben’s Cave has been explored quite extensively, and it has been made a safe place for novice divers to explore the hidden underwater world.

As the cave extends some 14 km (9 mi) underwater, it encompasses stalactites, stalagmites, fossilized conch shells, bivalves, and a halocline which is a vertical zone in the oceanic water column in which salinity changes rapidly with depth, located below the well-mixed, uniformly saline surface water layer.

Named after Ben Rose who is considered to be a scuba diving legend that was part of the scuba tour agency in the Bahamas known as UNEXSO, where in 1982 he also co-discovered new species in the cave.

Still, the upper part of the water in the cave is fresh and floats on top of the lower saltwater, and then once the saltwater begins, it is horizontal caverns as far as the eye can see underwater.

Since the exploration of this intriguing place is conducted only by certified dive instructors, it is not possible to dive by you, and all diving expeditions are conducted by a certified diving agency or certified divers.

In conclusion, despite the potential dangers of diving, with a competent guide, exploring Ben’s Cave will surely be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers a glimpse into the magnificent underwater blue world of the Bahamas, unparalleled anywhere else on the planet.

Press Release: Rescheduling OF Governorship Elections

INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION

PRESS RELEASE

RESCHEDULING OF GOVERNORSHIP AND STATE HOUSES OF ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS

Following today’s ruling by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (EPT) on the reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) used for the Presidential election held on 25th February 2023, the Commission met to assess its impact on the Commission’s preparations for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, 11th March 2023.

JUST IN: INEC Moves Governorship, State Assembly Polls to March 18

Nigerians would recall that on 3rd March 2023, the Presidential EPT had given an ex-parte order for some political parties to inspect materials used for the Presidential election, including the forensic inspection of over 176,000 BVAS used in the election which are located in INEC LGA offices across the country. The Commission approached the Tribunal to reconsider the order, given that the BVAS Systems were to be deployed for the Governorship and State Assembly elections and that the lack of a clearly defined timeframe for the inspection could disrupt the Commission’s ability to conduct the outstanding elections. For instance, the BVAS can only be activated on the specific date and time of an election. Having been used for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on 25th February 2023, it is necessary to reconfigure the BVAS for activation on the date of the Governorship and State Assembly elections.

While the ruling of the Tribunal makes it possible for the Commission to commence the preparation of the BVAS for the Governorship and State Assembly elections, it has come far too late for the reconfiguration to be concluded. Consequently, the Commission has taken the difficult but necessary decision to reschedule the Governorship and State Assembly elections which will now take place on Saturday 18th March 2023. By this decision, campaigns will continue until midnight of Thursday 16th March 2023 i.e. 24 hours before the new date for the election.

This decision has not been taken lightly but it is necessary to ensure that there is adequate time to back up the data stored on the over 176,000 BVAS machines from the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on 25th February 2023 and then to reconfigure them for the Governorship and State Assembly elections. This has been the practice for all elections, including the period when the Commission was using the Smart Card Readers.

However, we wish to reiterate that the Commission is not against litigants inspecting election materials. Consequently, it will continue to grant all litigants access to the materials they require to pursue their cases in court.

We wish to reassure all political parties and candidates that the data from the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be backed up and available in INEC cloud facilities, including the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). Political parties can apply for Certified True Copies of the backend data of the BVAS. Also, the results on the BVAS will continue to be available on the IReV for interested parties to access.

We thank Nigerians and friends of Nigeria for their understanding as we continue to deal with these difficult issues and navigate these challenging times.

JUST IN: INEC Moves Governorship, State Assembly Polls to March 18

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections till March 18.

The exercise was previously scheduled to hold on March 11, but INEC, citing a logistics crisis stemming from BVAS configuration and transportation, said the election could not hold again as scheduled following a meeting of its executives on Wednesday evening.

“The elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations,” an official familiar with the meeting confirmed the news by telephone on Wednesday night. “We should be able to get everything in order before March 18.”

The meeting was still underway at INEC headquarters in Abuja as of the time of filing this report.

BREAKING: INEC Gets Court Nod to Reconfigure BVAS Machines

The commission had convinced the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to vary its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar permission to inspect the election materials on the premise that it had to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduction of the polls this Saturday.

BREAKING: INEC Gets Court Nod to Reconfigure BVAS Machines

0

The Presidential Election Petition Court sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Wednesday, granted the request of the Independent National Electoral Commission to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System it used for the presidential election.

The court, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of justices, held that preventing the electoral umpire from reconfiguring the BVAS would adversely affect the forthcoming governorship and State Assembly elections.

INEC Asks Court To Vary Inspection Order Granted Atiku, Obi

It dismissed objections by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against the request.

According to the court, allowing the objections by Obi and his party, would amount to “tying the hands of the Respondent, INEC”.

Dismissing objections by LP and Obi, the court held that the backup files on the server cannot be lost and that restraining INEC will affect the forthcoming governorship elections.

Justice Joseph Ikyegh who presided over the panel chided the applicants for repeating their request to be allowed to scan and make copies of the electoral materials in INEC’s possession stating that it amounted to an abuse of court process.

It noted that INEC had in an affidavit filed before the court, assured that the accreditation data contained in the BVAS could not be tampered with or lost.

It further stated that neither Obi nor LP filed a counter affidavit to challenge the argument in INEC’s affidavit.

The court, however ordered INEC to allow the Applicants to inspect and carry out digital forensic examination of all the electoral materials used in the conduct of the elections, as well as to avail them the Certified True Copy, of result of the physical inspection of the BVAS.

However, INEC assured that information in BVAS used for February 25 presidential poll is intact.

The electoral commission lead counsel, Tanimu Inuwa, gave the assurance on Tuesday at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, while opposing an application filed by the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on BVAS deployed in the presidential poll.

Opposing the application, Inuwa argued it would delay the conduct of governorship and houses of assembly elections scheduled for Saturday.

Earlier, Obi, lead counsel, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, had argued that the essence of the application was to enable the legal team to extract data embedded in the BVAS, “which represent the actual results from polling units.”

Obi’s lawyers also applied to obtain the certified true copy of all the data in the BVAS.

However, INEC, through its team of lawyers comprising four Senior Advocates of Nigeria, led by Inuwa, urged the court to refuse the application.

INEC insisted that granting the request by Obi would affect its preparations for the impending governorship and houses of assembly elections.

It told the court that there were about 176, 000 BVAS machines that were deployed in polling units during the presidential election.

2023 NCAA Div 1 Indoor Championships: Ofili Tipped To Win 200m Gold

0

Nigeria’s Favour Ofili has been tipped to win her first major collegiate title this weekend despite coming to the 2023 NCAA Division 1 indoor championships as the second fastest (22.36) behind Julien Alfred of University of Texas (22.26).

In his pre-championships preview and predictions on the official website of the NCAA, Stan Becton tips the 20 year old Ofili to upset Alfred.

‘While the fastest 200-meter time this season belongs to Alfred, I still think Favour Ofili wins the 200 meters.

Ofili specializes in the 200 meters, finishing second place in the 200 finals during the 2022 indoor and outdoor seasons. 2023 will be the year Ofili grabs her first 200 title,’ wrote Becton.

The NCAA reporter who has covered several NCAA championships (indoors and out) however tips Alfred to race home to gold in the 60m ahead of the Nigerian trio of Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Ezinne Abba.

Becton wrote: ‘Julien Alfred owns the seven fastest times run by a collegiate woman in the 60 meters all-time. Six of those times came this season. She’s the only right prediction here.’

The Sports journalist does not however see Favour Ashe swapping the bronze medal he won last year in the 60m for gold this year.

Instead, he believes Texas Tech’s Terrence Jones will win the gold medal.

”Guess who’s back? Back again. That would be 60 meter collegiate record holder Terrence Jones who reminded everyone of what he could do on the track with a 6.48-second finish in the Big 12 semifinals.

‘Jones knocked off the rust at the Big 12 Championships, and I think he’ll be plenty warmed up at the indoor championships,’ Becton predicted.

Nigeria’s duo of Udodi Onwuzurike and Alaba Akintola will neither win nor make the podium in the men’s 200m event, according to Becton who does not see a clear favourite in the event.

”The 200 meters could come down to lane draws and who wins in their heat with the fastest times. I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the top six entrants win the 200, but my pick is Florida’s Jacory Patterson. Patterson seems to be peaking at the right time, winning the SEC title, and his decision to scratch from the 400 meters will bode well in the 200 meters.”

Onwuzurike and Akintola do not feature in the top six. While the former, a former World U20 200m champion is ranked 13th best out of the 16 entrants courtesy of the 20.56 he ran this season, the latter is just outside in 14th (20.59).

Australia’s Bureau Of Meteorology Warns Dry Thunderstorms Possible Across Eastern NSW

0

Dozens of bushfires burning across Australia’s east coast could get worse as a severe heatwave continues, fire services have warned.

After two years of rains and floods, a return to warmer conditions has sparked New South Wales state’s worst fires since the 2019/2020 “Black Summer”.

A blaze 250km (155 miles) north-west of Sydney triggered the region’s first emergency fire warning in two years.

Residents in affected areas across New South Wales – Australia’s most populous state – have been urged to evacuate, and there are reports of damage to some properties.

Temperatures in some parts of the state also hit 40C (104F) on Monday, for the first time since January 2021.

On Tuesday, 33 fires were still burning across the state, 10 of which were not under control, fire authorities said.

The NSW Rural Fire Service said strong winds had driven the fires’ rapid spread.

“It’s going to be another tough day for firefighters and potentially even into tomorrow before we get some reprieve,” RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (Bom) also warned that dry thunderstorms were possible across eastern NSW, which could spark new fires.

The hot and dry conditions are expected to last until Wednesday.

Eastern Australia has experienced three consecutive summers of La Niña conditions, with above-average rainfall causing widespread flooding.

But last week, the Bom said its models suggested La Niña was “likely near its end”, with a return to neutral conditions or even the hot and dry El Niño phenomenon, likely in the southern hemisphere’s autumn.

At least 33 people and an estimated 3 billion animals and birds died in 2019-20 Black Summer fires, one of Australia’s worst-ever natural disasters.
