Result Collation: Group Urges Stakeholders To Remain Calm

0

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has urged stakeholders and the electorate to remain calm as INEC collated results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Prof. Anthony Olusanya, a member of the Team of Experts for CTA, an election observer group, made the call in its preliminary statement on “The Observations of the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections of Feb. 25.

Olusanya said that as the collation process and election in places where elections were rescheduled continued, all stakeholders should continue to conduct themselves in a peaceful and responsible manner.

He specifically called on INEC to hold itself to the highest level of neutrality and accountability.

Olusanya said the group’s preliminary findings from their field observers showed that INEC officials and materials generally did not arrive on time at the majority of polling units observed.

“Although INEC proposed commencement of accreditation was for 8.30 a.m., on the average, polling officials and materials did not arrive the polling units before 10.30 a.m.

“However, reports from our observers across 982 polling units so far reported across the country showed that INEC officials and materials arrived between 7a.m. and 8.30 a.m. in 53 per cent of the polling units.

“While security personnel were expected to be on ground before the commencement of the voting process, our observers noted that in most of the polling units, security personnel were not present until about 9 to 10 a.m.

“Generally, observers reported that the security personnel behaved and conducted themselves professionally.”

Olusanya also said that voter turnout was generally impressive, adding that in most cases, voters came out earlier than the arrival of INEC officials, materials and security personnel.

“They mostly conducted themselves peacefully and in accordance with voting guidelines.”

On the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), Olusanya said that in some cases, INEC ad hoc staff demonstrated insufficient familiarity with the operation of the BVAS.

“Observers reported that wrong codes and poor network were some of the challenges faced by the ad hoc staff.”

Similarly, Executive Director of CTA, Faith Nwadishi commended INEC for creating special polling units for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

She said that on the whole, all stakeholders on the electoral value chain had put in their best to make sure that the country had free, fair and credible elections.

“However, the political parties and actors seem not to be taking a queue. You go to the field you see a party agent not wearing an INEC approved identity card.

“We commend Nigerians; a lot of them were out to vote even at centres where there was late arrival of INEC officials.

“This shows that the Nigerian voters now understand their role in our electoral history.”

Executive Director, Persons With Disabilities Action Network, Ubaka Betram, recalled that before the commencement of the election, INEC had registered no fewer than 5,362 persons with disabilities.

He said that observers discovered that over 95 per cent of PWDs did not participate in the election.

Betram, however, called on governments and stakeholders to educate the populace against stigmatisation of PWDs.

Atiku Calls For Immediate Upload Of Election Results

0

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has demanded immediate upload of Saturday presidential election results on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) server.

Abubakar made the call in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe on Sunday in Abuja.

Abubakar advised INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to instruct the election collation officers to upload the results from the polling units to INEC server immediately.

Abubakar said the call became necessary to checkmate some governors trying to compromise the results at the local government collation level.

“It will be a disservice to Nigerians and a negation to democracy for anyone to subvert the will of the people as freely expressed in their votes of yesterday,” Abubakar said.

He called on Nigerians to be calm but vigilant to ensure that anti-democratic elements who were masquerading as progressives do not steal their mandate.

Abubakar expressed gratitude to the Nigerian people for their support so far and pledged to continue to work hard to earn their trust and confidence.

Man Utd Win Carabao Cup To End Six-Year Trophy Drought

0

Manchester United clinched their first major trophy in six years with a ruthless 2-0 win against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side took control by half-time thanks to Casemiro’s header and a Sven Botman own goal and held firm despite Newcastle’s second-half pressure. United’s first silverware since 2017, when they won the Carabao Cup and the Europa League in the Jose Mourinho era, was just a reward for a mature display that underlined the impressive work done by Dutchman Ten Hag since he arrived from Ajax last year.

The celebrations that accompanied United’s sixth Carabao Cup triumph could be the first of many trophy parades on the evidence of Ten Hag’s transformative first season.

“You have to win the first one and that is what we did today,” Ten Hag said.

“We can get a lot of inspiration from this and more confidence that we can do it.

“We are still at the start of restoring Manchester United to where we belong — winning trophies.”

United remain challengers on three other fronts, sitting third in the Premier League and with an FA Cup fifth round tie against West Ham on Wednesday followed by a Europa League last 16 tie against Real Betis in March.

After 10 years in the wilderness since Alex Ferguson retired having led them to their last Premier League title in 2013, United are finally emerging from one of the darkest period in the club’s illustrious history.

United finished a dismal sixth in the Premier League last season, but Ten Hag has swiftly masterminded their return to relevance

It was fitting that Ten Hag’s maiden trophy success with United came after he met Ferguson for dinner recently and with the Scot watching from the Wembley stands.

Ending United’s longest trophy drought for 40 years is no guarantee of future success, but the steely Ten Hag appears capable of thriving in the unrelenting Old Trafford spotlight.

United co-chairman Avram Glazer, attending his first game since the November announcement that his family are considering offers for the club, might reconsider selling up after viewing what could be the start of a golden era.

Despite failing to win their first major trophy since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Newcastle can also expect to feature in more showpiece occasions soon.

Fresh Polls To Hold In 7 Abia LGAs Monday – INEC

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will conduct fresh presidential and national assembly elections on Monday in various polling units in seven Local Government Areas of Abia.

INEC Administration Secretary in charge of Abia State, Clement Oha who disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Umuahia on Sunday, gave the time for the fresh poll as 8:00 am

He identified the affected LGAs as: Obingwa, Osisioma, Aba North, Aba South, Umuahia North, Ohafia, and Arochukwu.

The Administration Secretary said that the affected polling units in the affected LGAs had been communicated.

He explained that the reported skirmishes in the affected polling units during Saturday’s election necessitated the fresh poll.

” We had various degrees of discrepancies with respect to the procedures that were violent to some extent.

“The Commission in their wisdom felt that the credibility of the election should not be compromised, and that there should be no winner by default. So, election must take place in the affected polling units tomorrow (Monday)”.

When asked to identify the number of polling units affected, the Administration Secretary, said it was still being processed.

On the whereabouts of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in charge of the state, Professor Ike Uzochukwu, the Administration Secretary, said he must have been tired and needed to rest.

” We were in a meeting here up till 2:00 am when I left. I learnt he left by 5:00 am. Certainly, he is a human being, and maybe is tired”.

When prodded further to disclose the exact number of polling units involved in the fresh election so that voters in the affected areas could be properly guided, Oha said such information resided with the REC.

Then he was asked if the REC did not authorize the press briefing, otherwise, he should have equally made available the necessary information, but he said he scouted the information from Electoral Officers.

” We are still gathering the information because it was going to the REC straight. But now that we can’t see him, we are trying to calibrate information from the EOs.

” I’m the Administration Secretary. The REC deals with operational issues. I have not told you I got the consent of the REC to speak. “

When asked if he spoke for the REC he said:” I’m only speaking as the Administrative Secretary of INEC, Abia State in the absence of REC. If the is around I will not be granting press interview”.

Asked what happens assuming the REC counters his position since he did not get his consent, he said:” I don’t think he will counter because it’s the commission’s decision”.

The confusion over the whereabouts of the REC was becoming worrisome.

One of the presidential collation officers who returned from Isuikwuato with the result threatened to go to his house with the result as the REC was nowhere to be seen.

He waited to a point of embarrassment at the presidential election collation centre at the INEC headquarters but no activity was going on at the centre following the disappearance of the REC.

Unconfirmed source said that the REC might have been redeployed.
