Election Results Are Safe, INEC Assures Nigerians

0

Against the background of complaints about the slow response rate of its result viewing portal, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has assured Nigerians that the development was not due to an intrusion of its systems by external forces, assuring that all results, including those not yet uploaded to the portal, remained safe on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS.

INEC said the results cannot be tampered with and any discrepancy between them and the physical results used in collation will be thoroughly investigated and remediated, in line with Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022.

“The Commission is aware of challenges with the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). Unlike in off-season elections where the portal was used, it has been relatively slow and unsteady.

“The Commission regrets this setback, especially because of the importance of IReV in our results management process,” INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, said on Sunday.

According to him, the problem is totally due to technical hitches related to scaling up the IReV from a platform for managing off-season, state elections to one for managing nationwide general elections.

He said it is indeed not unusual for glitches to occur and be corrected in such situations.

“Consequently, the Commission wishes to assure Nigerians that the challenges are not due to any intrusion or sabotage of our systems, and that the IReV remains well-secured.

“Our technical team is working assiduously to solve all the outstanding problems, and users of the IReV would have noticed improvements since last night.

“We also wish to assure Nigerians that results from the polling units, copies of which were issued to political parties, are safe on both the BVAS and the IReV portal.

“These results cannot be tampered with and any discrepancy between them and the physical results used in collation will be thoroughly investigated and remediated, in line with Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022.

“While we fully appreciate the concerns of the public on this situation and welcome various suggestions that we have received from concerned Nigerians, it is important to avoid statements and actions that can heat up the polity at this time or promote disaffection towards the Commission.

“We take full responsibility for the problems and regret the distress that they have caused the candidates, political parties and the electorate,” he added.

Exploring Anibare Bay, Nauru

0

Anibare Bay is a large bay which is located to the east of the Anibare District, also to the eastern side of the Republic of Nauru.

With its quite long sandy coral beach, Anibare is considered to be among the most popular tourist spots of the island nation that features very interesting coral formations.

The formation of the bay is, as geologists say, formed by an underwater collapse of the volcano that underlies Nauru, where a large arc shaped block slid away and rotated out from the island.

Still, the white sand are very tempting for people to go and swim in the crystal clear waters, however, due to the strong undercurrents which can be very dangerous, it is always recommended for people to be extra careful.

With that, there are many surfers who choose Anibare Bay to experience the wild side of Nauru, something for which they never regret.

All in all, this amazingly beautiful, tropical spot which deserves to be better known from the tiny island nation, shall continue to attract everyone who decides to spend as much time as possible to the Pacific Island nation of Nauru.

2023: JAMB Announces UTME Registration

0

The registration for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) has ended after a one-week extension announced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

2023: JAMB Extends UTME Registration

The Head, Public Affairs and Protocol of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the board had granted the extension to accommodate candidates who could not register for the 2023 UTME within the allowable window of Jan. 14 to Feb. 14, due to recent developments in the country.

Benjamin said that at the close of the registration, about 1.6 million candidates had successfully registered for the 2023 UTME.

” This number does not include the Direct Entry component of the exercise which had started on Monday, 20th February, 2023 before it was put on hold on Tuesday, 21st February, 2023.

” The board registrar’s monitoring team which has gone round the country, was in Nasarawa and Delta states on the final day of the exercise to oversee its conclusion.

” In Asaba, Delta State, the team visited Trinity Innovation Hub CBT Centre; Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku CBT Centre 1 and 2; Delta State Library CBT and others.

” It was however, remarkable that none of these centres have any candidates waiting to be registered, indicating that almost all candidates who desires to register for the exercise have done so,” he said.

Benjamin further said that same situation was replicated in many centres in Nasarawa State as few candidates were seen at all the centres a day to the closing date and these were cleared before the close of work.

According to him, from every indication, this year’s exercise is shaping up to be the smoothest the board has ever had.

” However, based on reports received from the various monitoring teams across the country, the board will review its SIM number swap policy.

” This is because, it will now require the Telcos to confirm that the old SIM being put forward for swapping previously belonged to the applicant but had been issued to another person,” he said.

The JAMB spokesperson added that this would therefore, preclude the possibility of a `SIM welcome back’ before such swapping would be approved.

Cash Crunch: NMA, PSN Lament Over Worsening Healthcare Situation

0

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) have lamented over the worsening healthcare situation in the country as people find it difficult to access services and drugs due to naira scarcity.

Kwara state’s NMA Chairman, Dr. Ola Ahmed, said this during an interview with newsmen in Ilorin, adding that some patients may die due to the unavailability of cash to pay for healthcare services in hospitals.

He said “patients are in a dire situation as they are unable to buy the required drugs to stay alive… A patient that is critically sick and cannot access money to pay for drugs is a terrible combination.

“While the money transfer platforms are not easy to make as services tend not to work, some people use the opportunity to dupe people by sending fake transfer alerts, ” he lamented.

Ahmed, however, said that the Kwara NMA would visit the management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and the Kwara State Hospital Management Board to discuss how best to tackle the situation to save lives.

According to him, the association will also visit both government and private hospitals to find ways to tackle the situation.

On her part, Munirat Bello, the Secretary of the Kwara PSN, said pharmacists have been trying to be humanitarian in the face of the challenge by giving drugs on credit.

She added that “patients who received drugs on credit can refund when they are able to.

“But the risk is that some people don’t come back to pay. However, we will continue to engage with customers and patients to save lives”.
