Cyclone Gabrielle: New Zealand Declares National State Of Emergency, Many Displaced

0

New Zealand’s prime minister says Cyclone Gabrielle, which has pummelled much of the North Island, is a weather event not seen “in a generation”.

Chris Hipkins’ government has declared a state of emergency – only the third in New Zealand’s history.

About a third of the country’s population of five million people live in affected areas.

Many people are displaced and some were forced to swim from their homes to safety after rivers burst their banks.

Others have been rescued from rooftops.

About a quarter of a million people are without power. Falling trees have smashed houses, and landslides have carried others away and blocked roads.

The storm’s damage has been most extensive in coastal communities on the far north and east coast of the North Island – with areas like Hawke’s Bay, Coromandel and Northland among the worst hit.

Communications to one town in the region have been completely cut after a river burst its banks.

Exploring Hotel De Oriente, The Philippines

0

Hotel de Oriente is considered to be one of the first luxury hotels that were rebuilt and it is part of the sprawling property Las Casas Filipinas de Azucar which serves as an open-air museum, and it is located in the Municipality of Bagac of the Bataan Province, within the Central Luzon Region of the Republic of the Philippines.

The original structure was built in Manila in 1889 by the order of Don Manuel Perez Marqueti, who was the father of Luis Perez Samanillo, and owner of the Perez Samanillo Building in the capital Manila, where it was considered to be a first-class hotel that most likely was the single one in the entire archipelago that constitutes the Philippines.

The location was chosen due to the proximity of the docks, and the Chinese retail businesses that were thriving at the time. The design was carried out by the Spanish architect Juan Jose Huervas y Arizmendi who was ordered to make a building not passing 100,000$.

The end piece had three floors, 83 impressive rooms, in addition to the stables for 25 horses, an attic, and a grandiose entrance that is floored and roofed in red clay tiles.

The ground part of the exterior features a narrow arcade with Moorish arches, where the central one is rising to the top of the second floor. A couple of years after its construction, Hotel de Oriente was certainly considered plush and to be the best lodging ever at the end of the century.

Sadly, there is no information on what really happened to the original structure in the capital, or how it was destroyed, however, the hotel structure was rebuilt in the before mentioned hotel and heritage park Las Casas Filipinas de Azucar based on archival records and surviving photos of the original structure.

Nowadays, this replica is serving as a premier convention center of the sprawling property that can accommodate people for banquets of up to 1,000 people.

Of course, with the visit to the historic park, there are tours named Walking Heritage Park that explain in greater detail the longstanding history of Hotel de Oriente and the mark it left behind.

All in all, a definite source of history that will direct and point everyone towards the colonial past of the Philippines which left an enormous footprint on the culture, and architecture as well, and visiting it is well worth the time.

South Africa Declares National State Of Disaster Over Floods

0

The South African government has declared a national state of disaster to enable an intensive and coordinated response to the impact of floods that are affecting seven of the country’s nine provinces.

The National Disaster Management Center has classified the impact of current above-normal rainfall in various parts of the country as a national disaster, the Presidency announced late Monday.

Provinces of Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Northern Cape, and the North West have been affected by the heavy rains.

The center has received reports ranging from flooded homes, vehicles swept away by floodwaters and overflowing dams and sewerage facilities, to the loss of basic infrastructure and damage to roads, bridges and a Limpopo hospital.

In agriculture, farmers have suffered crop and livestock losses, and anticipate further losses as the South African Weather Service predicts that current heavy rains will persist, according to the Presidency.

National entities, including the South African Police Service and the South African National Defense Force, may be required to play a role in response to the disaster, it said.

Buhari Signs Business Facilitation Bill Into Law

0

To provide an enabling environment for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Business Facilitation Bill 2022 also known as the Omnibus Bill into law.

The Executive Bill was presented as the Business Facilitation (Miscellaneous Provision) Act, 2023, a legislative intervention by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) which amends 21 business-related laws, removing bureaucratic constraints to doing business in Nigeria.

The new law also codifies Executive Order 001 on Transparency and Efficiency in Public Service Delivery, the Administration’s first executive order, aimed at strengthening ease of doing business reforms across the country.

In her remarks, Dr Jumoke Oduwole stated that “The PEBEC Secretariat was delighted to see the Act come into fruition saying it was a culmination of over four years of collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders, including the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Others are the Nigeria Bar Association Section on Business Law through the participation of over 40 law firms and consulting firms, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), and the National Assembly Business Environment Roundtable (NASSBER).

She said “We are especially delighted to appreciate the 9th National Assembly for its speedy consideration of this Bill, with immense support from Senator Babajide Omoworare, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate) for all his efforts.”

The Business Facilitation Act, 2023 consolidates the last seven years of PEBEC-led reforms and demonstrates the Administration’s sustained commitment towards making Nigeria a progressively easier place to start and grow a business.

Kenya Deploys Army Against Bandits

0

Kenya’s President William Ruto has ordered the army to join a security operation against armed bandits in the northern Rift Valley region who have killed dozens of people in recent months.

Report says the order came as the interior minister declared parts of six counties in the region as “disturbed and dangerous,” issuing a 30-day dusk-to-dawn curfew starting from Tuesday.

“The government has determined the security situation currently prevailing in the northern Rift Valley Region as a national emergency. Accordingly, painful and decisive measures must be taken effectively immediately,” Prof Kindiki Kithure said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a government notice said the troops would be deployed to support the police from Wednesday.

It ordered all people holding illegal guns and ammunition to hand them over to the authorities in three days or “meet the full force of the law”.

More than 100 civilians and 16 police officers have been killed by bandits in the past six months, according to the interior ministry.

Report says the government has come under criticism for not doing enough to deal with the problem, even as the armed gunmen have recently become bolder, killing people and stealing livestock despite high-level security meetings in the areas.

As previous security operations have not deterred the armed bandits from carrying out attacks.

Gabon President Proposes Cutting Presidential Mandate

0

Gabon President, Ali Bongo has proposed shortening the presidential mandate from seven to five years.

This comes as he began consultations to prepare for elections this year and measures to prevent violence.

Report says more than two days of deadly unrest followed Gabon’s last elections in 2016 after the opposition rejected Ali Bongo’s victory and alleged fraud.

“On the eve of future general elections, I have today decided to set the term of office for all elections to five years,” Bongo said

The move will require constitutional reform and a vote in parliament.

Meanwhile, there are currently no constitutional term limits in Gabon.

Bongo has been president of the oil-producing West African nation since succeeding his father, Omar, who died in 2009.

He has not said whether he will run for a third term in the 2023 race for which an exact date has not yet been set.

The consultations on the upcoming elections are scheduled to last until Feb. 24.

Edo State Special Assistant on Media Project, Crusoe Osagie, in a statement, said Edo was the only sub-national invited as a state to the education summit.

He added that the stated has continued to stand out as a sub-national that is demonstrating strong political will and action to accelerate foundational literacy and numeracy.

Osagie quoted the Executive Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), Ozavize E. Salami, as saying: “Over the years of the basic transformation programme, we have trained over 15, 400 teachers and up skilled them in modern teaching and learning pedagogy. The programme has also focused on the use of digital instructional materials. All the teachers use tablets and scripted lessons across every local government area in the state, including the hard-to-reach communities.”

Elections Won’t Hold In 240 Polling Units – INEC

0

Elections will not be held in 240 polling units in 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said.

This is because no voter chose the polling units during the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) between June 2021 and July 2022.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this when he addressed members of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, the polling units are part of the over 56,000 newly created polling units.

INEC had from 2021 increased the number of polling units from a total of 119,973 to 176,846.

With this development, the presidential and national assembly as well as states and their houses of assembly elections will be held in 176,606 polling units, he added.

“There are 240 polling units without registered voters spread across 28 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). They range from one polling unit to 12 polling units in each State and the FCT, except Taraba and Imo States with 34 and 38 polling units respectively.

“No new registrants chose the polling units and no voters indicated interest to transfer to them during the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), mainly for security reasons. This means that no elections will hold in these polling units.”

“You may recall that in 2021, with your support and that of other critical stakeholders, the Commission successfully expanded voter access to polling units 25 years after the last delimitation exercise in 1996. Consequently, the number of polling units increased from 119,973 to the current figure of 176,846,”  Yakubu said.

Sacked Osun Teachers Stage Protest In Osogbo

1

Some teachers employed by the immediate administration of Adegboyega Oyetola in Osun State staged a peaceful protest on Monday in Osogbo, asking Governor Ademola Adeleke to reconsider his decision to disengage them.

It would be recalled that about 1,500 teachers recruited into the service between September and October 2022 by the last administration, but sacked through an Executive Order by Adeleke, had written to the governor asking him not to disengage them alongside other workers recruited by Oyetola’s government.

The protesters, who converged on the Olaiya area, carried placards with various inscriptions and also urged relevant stakeholders in the affairs of the state to intervene.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Olufemi Adedeji said their recruitment followed due process and pleaded with Adeleke to return them to their duty posts.

He said, “I am one of the 1,500 newly recruited teachers for both primary and secondary schools in Osun. I was given an appointment letter on September 30, 2022, and the process for this recruitment began in the year 2020.

“And immediately we were given appointment letters, and we all reported to our primary places of assignment.

“We have been dutiful, patriotic citizens of this state, and upon resumption, we were gladly received by teachers, students, and the leadership of the Parents and Teachers Association.

“We worked for about four months with no reward for our work until the new government, under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke, ordered a review of our appointment.

“Since then, we have made all efforts to call Mr Governor’s attention and plead for mercy. But we have not received any response from him.

“We are pleading with our Governor and all stakeholders and well-meaning citizens of the state to plead with him to reconsider us and give us a positive response. We are dying in silence.”

The spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, could not be reached for comment as calls to him rang out, while a reply to a text message sent to him on the issue was still expected.
