The trial of the driver involved in the road crash linked to former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been postponed until June 2, 2026.
The Ogun Magistrate’s Court 1 in Sagamu, presided over by Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun, granted the adjournment to allow prosecutors file an updated charge in the case. This marks the third time the matter has been delayed for the same reason.
The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji, is facing four counts, including allegations of dangerous and reckless driving causing death. Additional charges include negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm, property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.
Following a request by the prosecution counsel, G. O. Ogunyomi, the court approved the adjournment for proper hearing. The defence did not oppose the application.
Speaking after the session, defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan said the delay was necessary to ensure fairness and justice for all parties involved.
Mobolaji, 46, was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV during the December 29, 2025 accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
The incident occurred when the SUV collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, both were treated, and the boxer was later discharged to continue recovery at home.
The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami sent shockwaves through the global boxing community, where both men were regarded as key members of Joshua’s team. Their remains were later repatriated to the United Kingdom, with a funeral prayer service held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
