A disturbing video showing the shooting of a restrained suspect by a police officer attached to the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State, on Sunday, April 26, 2026, has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread public outrage and renewed debate over police conduct in Nigeria.

In the nearly two-minute footage, a male suspect is seen seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back. He is heard pleading for his life, insisting that he was misled by a friend in Sapele, Delta State.

The suspect, visibly distressed, begged officers to spare him and offered to lead them to the alleged accomplice.

“Officers, abeg, I go tell you everything. Na my friend deceived me. E dey Sapele. I go carry you go the place,” the suspect said in Pidgin English.

While he continued pleading, one officer dressed in plain clothes was seen cocking his rifle before firing directly at the restrained suspect. The man collapsed immediately as bystanders watched in shock.

The officers later moved the body into a vehicle marked “The Nigeria Police Force Effurun Area Command, Uvwie.”
Reports also claimed the suspect was found with a pistol, though the video has since raised questions and intensified public criticism.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed the killing and identified the suspect as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.

He stated that the officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been arrested and transferred to the state headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary action.

According to the statement, police operatives acted on credible intelligence that the deceased was allegedly apprehended while attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with ammunition.

However, Edafe disclosed that the officer violated operational procedures.
“Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody.

However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”

The Command also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would take its full course.
