Fact Check: Can You Still Borrow Data On Your Mobile Number?

MTN Nigeria has temporarily halted its airtime and data credit service, popularly known as Xtratime, in response to new regulatory requirements.

The move follows updated rules introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), which now mandate stricter licensing and compliance for digital lending services.

In an official statement signed by company secretary Uto Ukpanah and shared via the Nigerian Exchange, MTN explained that the decision is part of efforts to align with the 2025 Digital Lending Regulations.

“MTN Nigeria Communications PLC (MTN Nigeria or the Company) hereby notifies the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public that the Company has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit advance service (‘Xtratime’).

“This relates to the implementation of processes under the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, which introduced a new compliance and licensing framework for entities providing digital or non-traditional consumer credit services,” the statement read.

The updated FCCPC framework expands earlier guidelines introduced in 2022, now covering telecom operators and other short-term credit providers.

It also introduces tighter oversight, with a deadline for full compliance set for April 2026 driven by concerns around consumer debt, data protection, and lending practices.

Can You Still Borrow Data On MTN?

For now, the answer is no, you cannot borrow data or airtime through Xtratime.

The service remains temporarily suspended until MTN completes the required regulatory processes and obtains approval under the new framework.

However, the company has advised customers to explore other available options for purchasing airtime and data while the suspension is in place.

“In the interim, customers continue to have access to alternative digital channels for airtime and data purchases.

“Given the scale within the revenue mix, we do not expect the temporary suspension to have a material impact. We are closely monitoring customer behaviour and usage trends and will provide an update on any quantified impact in our Q1 2026 results,” the statement read.

What Customers Should Expect Next

The suspension is not permanent but tied to compliance with evolving regulations in Nigeria’s digital credit space. Once MTN meets the FCCPC’s licensing requirements, the Xtratime service is expected to return.

Until then, users will need to rely on direct purchases through banking apps, USSD, or other digital platforms, as regulators continue tightening control over lending services to protect consumers.
