The Federal Government has unveiled a 90-day economic action plan aimed at reducing the cost of living, improving food affordability and strengthening economic opportunities across Nigeria.
The initiative was approved by the National Economic Council (NEC) during its 161st meeting on Thursday, October 22, 2026, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The plan targets five major areas, including food affordability, tax harmonisation, completion of priority government projects, removal of investment barriers and financial support for vulnerable households.
The council also approved the development of a national project monitoring dashboard to strengthen accountability and track government interventions.
The announcement follows growing concerns about rising food prices, transportation costs and the financial pressures facing Nigerian households.
How Will the 90-Day Plan Affect Nigerians?

A major component of the initiative involves expanding affordable transportation through compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.
The council proposed a coordinated funding framework between federal and state governments to accelerate the deployment of alternative-energy vehicles.
The initiative is expected to reduce transportation costs if operators pass the benefits of lower operating expenses on to commuters.
NEC also emphasised improving access to essential goods, healthcare services and employment opportunities.
In Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun announced plans for a government-backed bulk food purchasing programme and the expansion of the state’s mass transit fleet.
However, the success of the economic action plan will depend on its implementation and whether the proposed interventions deliver measurable relief to households.
With the 90-day implementation period approaching, Nigerians will be watching to see whether the government’s commitments translate into lower living costs and improved economic conditions.
