The pursuit of an ideal city has long been a topic of debate among architects and urban planners. In addition to aesthetic identity and cultural heritage, the quality of life in every city represents perhaps the most important marker in this pursuit.
This year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company of The Economist, has released its Global Liveability Index 2024, highlighting the cities that excel in this ongoing quest.
European cities like Vienna, Copenhagen, Zurich, and Geneva rank high, attributed to their smaller populations, which contribute to lower crime rates and less congestion.
In comparison with the 2023 ranking, the numbers for North American and Australian cities have been dragged down by the ongoing housing crisis.
The assessment ranks 173 cities from around the world. Each city is scored based on 30 qualitative and quantitative factors evaluating 5 categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. The scores are based on external data points, in-house analysts, and in-city contributors.

Let’s see the first 5.
5. Calgary, Canada
Starting with number 5. Calgary, Canada
Calgary is a city in southern Alberta, Canada. The physical setting of Calgary distinguishes it from other cities.
It is situated on the western edge of the Great Plains, in the foothills of the spectacular Canadian Rockies, and the surrounding valleys and uplands are a distinct change from the flat prairie landscapes typical of the region.
A relatively young Canadian city, it is the administrative and financial headquarters of the country’s petroleum industry.
Calgary also celebrates its history as a cattle ranching capital, an image enhanced by the city’s hosting of the annual Calgary Stampede, a 10-day rodeo-centred event.
In the early 21st century, Calgary was one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada.
Calgary inched up the rankings this year, now ranking fifth in the index, thanks to its perfect stability, healthcare and education scores. But it’s the flawless blend of urban charm and natural beauty that has residents consistently singing the city’s praises.
4. Melbourne, Australia
And number 4 on the list is Melbourne, Australia…
Melbourne city is capital of the state of Victoria, Australia. It is located at the head of Port Phillip Bay, on the southeastern coast.
The central city is home to about 136,000 people and is the core of an extensive metropolitan area—the world’s most southerly with a population of more than 1,000,000.
In Australia, Melbourne is second only to Sydney in population, and there is a good-natured rivalry between the two cities, to which geography and history have bequeathed diverse characteristics.
Though Melbourne’s flat site has led to the regular development of a rectangular pattern of streets, the city has many beautiful parks, and the person with an eye for architectural detail and history can find much that is varied and attractive.
Melbourne is well served by an integrated public transportation system of electric trains, buses, and tramcars, the latter a signature sight in the city.
Melbourne has a reputation for conservatism and financial soundness—attributes that have contributed to its growth and are revealed by the burgeoning skyline of the central city and the rapidly expanding eastern suburbs.
Both Sydney and Melbourne slipped in the rankings this year due to rising housing costs (which resulted in a lower infrastructure score), but Melbourne dropped just one spot to number four.
Despite housing challenges, residents still rave about its cultural diversity, culinary scene and overall quality of life.
3. Zurich, Switzerland
Number 3 sport goes to Zurich, Switzerland…
The city by the water combines urban living with nature. Zurich is abuzz with activity day and night with its countless events, many museums and diverse gastronomic scene, as well as Switzerland’s most vibrant nightlife.
And if you’re after rest and relaxation, you can be in the Swiss mountains in less than an hour.
So Why Zurich?
Zurich is a city that offers variety. A city where urban life is never far from nature. The old town can be found alongside the hip district, and luxurious brands alongside trendy labels.
Opportunities for sightseeing and enjoyment of art are guaranteed. Parks and laid-back bars can be found by the lake or river. And you can get from A to B in no time at all by tram or by bus.
The city is situated at the northern tip of Lake Zurich and on the Limmat river. Zurich’s old town impresses with its historic buildings, picturesque alleyways and, of course, Zurich’s landmark, the Grossmünster church.
Zurich has a large and diverse gastronomic scene. Whether classic Swiss, Italian, Asian, Moroccan or Lebanese: there’s something for everyone.
And there are also some great options available for those wanting something vegan or vegetarian. Street food festivals are a huge part of Zurich’s culinary variety.
Zurich, up three spots in the ranking this year at third place, maintained perfect scores in education and healthcare, also scoring well on infrastructure and culture. Its residents love its public resources as well as the sense of safety they feel in the city.
Zurich was also recently named the world’s “Smartest City”, due to its technological infrastructure and initiatives that contribute to a higher quality of life.
Zurich also has no shortage of positive economic activity, with lots of startups in fintech and biotech, and plenty of cooperation between the universities and the corporate world.
2. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen, capital and largest city of Denmark. Copenhagen offers the best quality of life in the world, according to an annual ranking by The Economist of 173 cities across the globe.
So, Denmark’s beautiful capital scored 98 points out of 100 across the five categories, trailing Vienna in first place only by 0.4 points.
Let’s do a little bit of history, In 1167, Bishop Absalon of Roskilde built a castle on an islet off the coast and fortified the town.
In 1445, Copenhagen was made the capital of Denmark and the residence of the royal family. In the civil and religious conflicts of the Protestant Reformation, the town was often sacked.
During the late 16th century Copenhagen’s trade began to flourish, and the city itself expanded. Among the new buildings erected were the Holmens Church, Trini-tatis Church, with the adjacent famous Round Tower, and the castle of Rosenborg (now the museum of the royal family).
Fast forward to 2024, As the index’s creators point out, Copenhagen’s and other cities’ modest size allows for a lower crime rate and less congested roads and transport systems.
This year, Denmark received a score of 100 in three out of five categories, missing out on top marks for Culture & Environment and Healthcare.
Gertrud Jørgensen, a professor of urban planning at the University of Copenhagen, says, despite losing points in the Healthcare category, the Danish capital is attractive because of its welfare state.
Furthermore, Copenhagen’s balance and stability in every aspect offer a great solution to the globally expanding cost-of-living crisis.

Glad to have you back ….and
Straight to number one on the most liveable cities in the world 2024!! Drums rolling for:
1. Vienna, Austria
Vienna is the capital of Austria. Of the country’s nine states, Vienna is the smallest in area but the largest in population.
Modern Vienna has undergone several historical transitions. From 1558 to 1918 it was an imperial city—until 1806 the seat of the Holy Roman Empire and then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
In 1918, it became the capital of the truncated, landlocked central European country that emerged from World War I as a republic.
From 1938 to 1945 Austria was a part of Adolf Hitler’s “Greater” Germany, and Vienna became “Greater” Vienna, reflecting the Nazi revision of the city limits.
In the decade following World War II, Austria was occupied by British, French, American, and Soviet forces, and Vienna was divided into five zones, including an international zone, covering the Innere Stadt (“Inner City”).
In 1955 the State Treaty, by which the country regained independence, was signed with the four occupying powers, and Vienna became once again the capital of a sovereign Austria.
Claiming the title of world’s most liveable city for the third consecutive year, the Austrian capital achieved perfect scores in four out of five categories, with only a slightly lower score in culture and environment due to a lack of major sporting events this year.
But that doesn’t mean the city lacks in either culture or environment – in fact, it’s both of those specifically that residents love most.
The city has an efficient public transport network, available for just €1 a day, as well as a well-functioning healthcare system, numerous universities and a high proportion of green spaces.

And yet again, Nigeria didn’t make the list!
(VISUALS OF NIGERIA) When we talk about Nigeria, what do we see? What images come to mind? Too often, the world sees poverty, instability and corruption.
Let’s talk about resources. Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, blessed with vast reserves of oil and natural gas. The Niger Delta is not just a region; it is a testament to the boundless wealth that flows beneath our feet. Our nation is one of the top oil producers globally, contributing significantly to the global energy market.
But if Nigeria is rich, why then do so many of our people suffer? Why do we face such stark inequalities and hardships? The answer lies not in a lack of wealth, but in the mismanagement of it. It lies in the disparity between potential and reality, in the manner of our rich resources and their distribution.
The list aforementioned is a wakeup call to Nigeria. We have to take out place in the comity of nations.
