As the United States gears up to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding in 2026, the U.S. Mint has unveiled a new commemorative quarter featuring Thomas Jefferson, one of the nation’s Founding Fathers and its third president.
The coin, known as the Declaration of Independence Quarter, is part of the U.S. Mint’s 2026 Semiquincentennial Circulating Coin Program, a special collection created to honor America’s founding and the key figures whose ideas helped shape the nation.
The new quarter officially entered circulation on June 1 and is expected to become one of the most recognizable symbols of the country’s upcoming milestone celebration.
Mint officials announced the release during an event at Monticello, Jefferson’s historic Virginia estate, highlighting the enduring influence of the former president on American democracy and governance.
Speaking at the event, U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis emphasized the lasting impact of the billions of coins produced each year, noting that many remain in circulation for generations.
“I think everybody at the United States Mint realizes that the billions and billions of coins that we produce every year will outlive us,” Hollis said.
He added that the coins being minted today could still be in use 50 to 100 years from now, carrying pieces of American history in the hands of future generations.
According to Mint officials, Jefferson was selected for the commemorative quarter not only because of his role as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence but also for his influence on the nation’s monetary system.
Jefferson strongly supported a decimal-based currency organized around the dollar, a concept that ultimately became the foundation of the modern U.S. coinage system. His vision helped shape the way Americans conduct everyday financial transactions more than two centuries later.
Officials hope the new quarter will encourage Americans to reflect on the nation’s history and the principles that guided its founding as the country approaches its 250th anniversary.
The Semiquincentennial Coin Program is expected to feature several designs celebrating important moments, people, and achievements from America’s past, with the Jefferson quarter serving as one of the first major releases ahead of the historic milestone.
For collectors and everyday Americans alike, the coin offers a small but lasting tribute to one of the architects of the United States and a reminder of the nation’s journey over the past 250 years.
