Oleshky Ceasefire: Ukraine And Russia Agree A Truce

A Melania Trump-Brokered Ceasefire in Occupied Oleshky, Talks in Abu Dhabi, and the First Truce of Ukraine’s Fifth Year

For the first time in more than four years of war, Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement that is small enough to work. On Friday both sides confirmed a ceasefire in Oleshky, the Russian-occupied town across the Dnipro River from Kherson, brokered through US First Lady Melania Trump, with peace negotiators from Kyiv, Moscow and Washington set to meet in Abu Dhabi in the first half of November.

What the truce actually does

All military action in and around Oleshky halts — Reuters reports 04:00 local on Oct. 27, with some US outlets citing Oct. 29 — long enough to mine-clear the approaches, deliver food, medicine, water and medical personnel, and evacuate civilians through a designated safe passageway. Russia’s chief of general staff, Valery Gerasimov, and Ukraine’s General Staff each committed to the same start time. Kyiv’s ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, confirmed the operation. Ukraine has already flown food in by drone twice.

US First Lady Melania Trump, described by her office as the “exclusive intermediary” in the Oleshky ceasefire, has for months campaigned for the return of Ukrainian children seized during the war.

Why it matters

Oleshky had 24,000 residents before the war; the White House puts the number that remain at 1,700–2,000, largely elderly. The first lady, described by her office as the deal’s “exclusive intermediary,” called it “a front-line war city on the brink of disaster.” Pope Leo raised the town with both Zelensky and Putin this week. It is humanitarian triage, not settlement — but it is the first deal both sides would sign.

The bigger track. Zelensky, speaking to the Hudson Institute, confirmed technical-level trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi in early November, possibly in Switzerland within a couple of weeks, and said he hopes a leaders’ summit follows. The groundwork came from envoy Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Zelensky in Norway and his subsequent talks with Putin in St Petersburg; Zelensky also spoke with Witkoff and Jared Kushner. His red lines are explicit: strong security guarantees and ten years of funding for Ukraine’s army. Moscow’s are equally fixed — the whole of Donbas, including land it does not hold. That gap stalled the last US-led round in February.

The friction underneath

Two US moves have strained Washington–Kyiv relations: speed caps imposed on Starlink terminals Ukraine relies on since Oct. 13 — Trump says he will “get it straightened out” and call Elon Musk if needed — and a deal admitting Russian diesel to US and global markets, framed as a price hedge before the midterms. Deputy PM Alexander Novak said three tankers were already en route to North America.

The ledger

On the same Friday, each side released 270 servicemen — the first swap since August, which Zelensky called a “very important result.” Ukraine’s acting prosecutor says more than 19,000 Ukrainian

civilians, including 762 children, have been killed since the full-scale invasion began. Oleshky is a corridor, not a conclusion. But after four and a half years, a corridor is the first thing a conclusion needs.
