Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress(ADC), citing escalating internal conflicts and what he described as a worsening political environment within the party.
Obi made the announcement on Sunday through a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he reflected on the broader challenges of Nigeria’s political space, which he characterised as “toxic” and increasingly distracting from the country’s development priorities.
He clarified that his decision was not driven by personal disagreements with prominent figures such as David Mark and Atiku Abubakar, noting that he continues to hold both men in high regard.
According to Obi, persistent internal disputes and mounting external pressures within the ADC had begun to resemble the instability he previously encountered in the Labour Party.
“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” Obi said.
He further expressed concern over ongoing legal battles, factional divisions, and a growing atmosphere of distrust within the party, warning that such issues were diverting attention away from urgent national concerns.
Obi also addressed what he described as the misinterpretation of integrity and sincerity in Nigeria’s political system.
“Even within spaces where one labours sincerely, one is sometimes treated like an outsider,” he said, adding that individuals acting in good faith are often subjected to criticism and misrepresentation.
The former governor of Anambra State emphasised that his political journey has never been driven by personal ambition for office.
“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society that works for all,” he stated.
Despite his exit from the ADC, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to national progress and his long-standing vision for a better Nigeria, expressing optimism about the country’s future.
“A new Nigeria is possible,” he added, stressing that his focus remains on promoting justice, equity, and equal opportunity for all citizens.
