Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 35-year-old confirmed his decision in an interview with BeIN Sports after Algeria suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32 on Friday.
Mahrez ends his international career with an impressive record of 40 goals and 45 assists in 119 appearances for the Desert Warriors.
The former Manchester City winger was instrumental in Algeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, helping the North African side lift its second AFCON title.
With his international career now over, Mahrez will turn his full attention to club football, where he currently represents Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
