The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to introduce a Special Intervention aimed at tackling persistent power outages in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Aminu Bello Masari, Chairman of the TETFund Board of Trustees, made this known while inaugurating the Steering Committee on Alternative Energy Solutions for tertiary institutions.
Masari, a former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Katsina State, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Fund’s commitment to supporting government efforts in ensuring a stable power supply in higher education institutions across the country.
Highlighting the critical role of electricity in fostering quality learning and research, Masari noted that inadequate power supply remains a major challenge for many tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The newly formed committee, led by Rt. Hon. Sunday Adepoju, a member of the Board of Trustees, has been given an initial two-month deadline to submit a preliminary report. Beyond this, the committee will also play a key role in implementing the proposed energy solutions.
It is worth noting that the Federal Government has previously outlined plans to enhance power supply in tertiary institutions through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
