The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage has already claimed some of the tournament’s biggest names, with four nations seeing their title hopes end while four others secured the first places in the Round of 16.
Canada became the first team to book a last-16 berth after edging co-hosts South Africa 1-0 in Houston, continuing their impressive run in a tournament where they have exceeded expectations. The North Americans will now face Morocco after the African side survived a dramatic penalty shootout against the Netherlands.
Brazil also avoided an early upset, defeating Japan 2-1 to stay on course for a sixth World Cup title. The five-time champions progressed to the Round of 16, where they will meet the winner of Tuesday’s clash between Ivory Coast and Norway.
Perhaps the biggest shock so far came in Atlanta, where Paraguay stunned four-time champions Germany. After a 1-1 draw through extra time, Paraguay held their nerve to win the penalty shootout 4-3, ending Germany’s campaign and extending the South Americans’ memorable run. Paraguay will next face either France or Sweden in the Round of 16.
Morocco completed another memorable chapter in their recent World Cup history by knocking out the Netherlands on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The Atlas Lions struck deep into stoppage time to force extra time before goalkeeper Yassine Bounou starred in the shootout, sending Morocco into a last-16 meeting with Canada.
The results mean South Africa, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands have all been eliminated, while Canada, Brazil, Paraguay and Morocco are the first confirmed teams through to the Round of 16.
Attention now turns to the remaining Round of 32 fixtures, with France taking on Sweden, Ivory Coast meeting Norway, Mexico facing Ecuador, England playing DR Congo, Belgium against Senegal, the United States facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain meeting Austria, Portugal taking on Croatia, Switzerland facing Algeria, Australia playing Egypt, Argentina against Cape Verde and Colombia meeting Ghana as the battle for the remaining Round of 16 places continues.
