Four Football Matches To Watch This Weekend

0

Liverpool visit the Emirates on Sunday looking to regain their mojo as Kwara United face a herculean task against RSB Berkane.

Kwara Utd v RSB Berkane @Mobolaji Johnson Arena @4pm on Oct.8

This is a huge game for Kwara United as they face RSB Berkane, the Confederation Cup defending champions, but anything is possible in 90 minutes of football. Kwara United are playing in Lagos, away from their home stadium in Ilorin, but Coach Azeez Mohammed told Brila that his players had prepared well for the herculean task.

“We’re ready for the game; the boys have prepared well; we know it’ll be a difficult game against a good team, but we’re confident in our ability.”

The Moroccans are not in great form right now, having won just one of their last five games, but they are the defending champions and have continental pedigree.

Arsenal v Liverpool @Emirates Stadium @4:30pm on Oct.9

It was unthinkable at the start of the 2022/23 English Premier League season that Arsenal would lead Liverpool by ten points after eight match days. The reality is that Arsenal are on the rise, whereas Liverpool have a lot of questions to answer, not to mention the seven-year Klopp slump.

This season, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have not been at their best, which has coincided with a slump in form. A loss for the Reds on Sunday would raise red flags about the season. Klopp requires a response from his players, but Arsenal are flying under Mikel Arteta.

AC Milan v Juventus @San Siro @5pm on Oct.8

After a recent slump, Stefano Pioli requires a positive result against Juventus at San Siro on Saturday. The defending champions lead the Old Lady by four points, but they are hampered by injuries, as evidenced by the 3-0 defeat in London last Wednesday.

Due to injuries to Alexis Saelemaekers, Simon Kjaer, Mike Maignan, Junior Messias, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pioli will need to change his tactics to face a Juventus team that has found some form with two consecutive victories. Juventus are still without Federico Chiesa and Mattia De Sciglio, while Angel di Maria is serving a three-match suspension.

Dortmund v Bayern @Signal-Iduna-Park @5:30pm on Oct.8

Both teams have 15 points after eight games, but Bayern Munich is the clear leader in goal scoring with 23 goals, while Dortmund has only scored 11 goals, highlighting the real challenge facing Edin Terzic, the Dortmund manager.

Julian Nagelsmann appeared to be under pressure before the international break after three losses and one defeat, but normal services resumed with the 4-0 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen. Dortmund’s last victory over their rivals came in August 2019, and Saturday’s game may not change that.

Japan Coach, Ikeda Thrilled With Win Over Super Falcons

0

Nadeshiko of Japan head coach, Futoshi Ikeda has expressed his excitement following the team’s win against the Super Falcons of Nigeria on Thursday.

The former world champions defeated the Super Falcons 2-0 in their friendly encounter at the Noevir Stadium, Kobe.

Mina Tamaka opened the scoring for the Asians four minutes after the hour mark.

The forward added the second from the penalty spot in the 68th minute.

The Nadeshiko extended their unbeaten streak against the Super Falcons to three games following the win.

“Until now, we have often played with a four-man defence line, but we have prepared a new system to expand the range of our plays both as a team and as individuals,” Ikeda was quoted by the official website of the Japanese Football Federation.
“I am satisfied with the efforts of the players towards that. In the first half, we thought a lot about the impact of the new system, and we didn’t have enough actions behind the defense line and shots toward the goal.

“I think the fact that we were able to win well in the international match also contributed to the achievement.”

Brazil’s great rivals Argentina remained third, with world champions France fourth and Euro 2020 runners-up England fifth.

There was good news for Italy, who failed to qualify for the World Cup finals again, as they climbed above Spain into sixth place.

Other World Cup-bound teams climbing the rankings were Croatia, up three places to 12th, Iran up two spots to 20th and Serbia who rose to 21st.

Qatar 2022 Will Be Messi’s Last World Cup, The Legend Admits

0

Argentina captain Lionel Messi said on Thursday that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will “surely” be the last of his career.

“It’s my last World Cup, surely. I feel good physically, I was able to do a very good pre-season this year, which I couldn’t do last year. It was essential to get to where I am, with a good state of mind and a lot of hope,”

Messi, who is due to appear in his fifth World Cup, made his international debut in 2005 and has since won 164 caps for Argentina and is the country’s all-time record scorer with 90 goals.

In the interview, which took place in Paris where Messi plays for Paris Saint-Germain, he admitted he was nervous about the impending tournament in Qatar.

“There is anxiety, nerves about the World Cup,” he said.

“We can’t wait for it to start.”

Messi’s international debut as a substitute against Hungary in 2005 lasted just two minutes before he was sent off but he quicky established himself in the national team set-up and travelled to Germany for his first World Cup in 2006.

He went on to play in the 2010 edition in South Africa, 2014 in Brazil, where Argentina reached the final, and 2018 in Russia.

The current side, under the management of Lionel Scaloni has now gone 35 games without defeat and is likely to figure as one of the pre-tournament favourites for the Qatar tournament.

“We have reached a good moment, with a very well-equipped and very strong group, but anything can happen,” said Messi.

“All the games are very difficult. The favourites are not always the ones who end up winning or taking the path that one expected.

“Argentina is always a candidate because of its history and what it means. But we are not the only favourites, there are other teams that are above us.”
