0

The Yaba College of Technology, Lagos on Wednesday matriculated 13,741 National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students for the 2021/2022 academic session.

Rector of YABATECH, Obafemi Omokungbe, said that the admitted number was for the 2021/2022 academic session.

They comprised full-time and part-time students who met the admission requirements.

While congratulating the students who took the matriculation oath, Omokungbe said that any student who violates the rules of the college would be penalised as stipulated by the law.

He said: “The matriculation is of utmost importance.

“The oath signifies that you accept to abide by all rules and regulations governing the conduct of students in the college.

“You must at all times ensure that you abide by this oath.

“You must shun all forms of anti-social activities such as cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, sexual misbehaviour and other unruly behaviours.

“You will be introduced to various structures, systems, rules and regulations in the college during the orientation programme for new students.”

The YABATECH Rector noted that 20,019 candidates applied for admission into the college for Full and Part-time programmes, but only 4,008 were offered admission into National Diploma Full Time Programme.

Omokungbe said that 2,563 candidates were given admission into the college’s HND (Full-Time) programme, while it offered admission to 7,170 candidates for both ND/HND (Part-Time) programme.

He charged the students to give their best during their academic career in the college, adding that students must record 75 per cent lecture attendance to qualify to write examinations.

He added: “I implore you to live up to expectations, take your studies very seriously and most importantly attend lectures regularly as it’s a prerequisite to qualify to write examinations.

“Be diligent, hardworking and focused on your academics, you must refrain from all forms of examination misconduct, you must imbibe the culture of discipline, avoid distraction and take your studies very seriously.

“You must also refrain from acts that may tarnish your image, that of your family and the college at large, as YABATECH has a high reputation and zero tolerance for all forms of indecent dressing.”

On the sideline, Omokungbe said that the management of the college had refurbished hostels and equipped them with adequate furniture to ensure the comfort of students  during their stay.

He added that the Students Union in the college was in place to work hand in hand with the management to ensure peace and orderliness, while ensuring the welfare of students.

The Rector also advised the new students to be security conscious of their environment, especially with the unprecedented rise of insecurity ranging from kidnapping to ritual murder and banditry.

He said: “Security is everyone’s business.

“Therefore, we must work hand in hand to ensure a secured environment.

“You must report to the college security unit if you observe or notice strange movement within the College.

“Management is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure safety on the two campuses of the college.”

Prince Harry, Meghan Adopt Beagle Called Mamma Mia

0

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have adopted a beagle called Mamma Mia.

The seven-year-old rescue dog joins fellow beagle Guy and a black Labrador thought to be named Pula at their family home in Montecito, California.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Mamma Mia was rescued along with 4,000 other beagles by federal authorities in Virginia in July.

Shannon Keith, an animal rights attorney who runs the Beagle Freedom Project, told the newspaper: “The duchess called me personally.”

She added: “She calls on my cell with no Caller ID and says, ‘Hey Shannon, this is Meghan.”

Keith said they talked for 30 minutes and she wondered if it was Megan Fox, but it was indeed the Duchess of Sussex.

The newspaper said Meghan and Harry made an after-hours visit and played with Mia who had been brought there with eight of her newborn puppies.

Keith told the newspaper: “The duchess is holding Mia and was like, ‘We’re adopting her.’”

“She was like, ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy. … We want ones we can help who are older.’”

Animal-lover Meghan has adopted a number of rescue dogs over the past few years and brought her American rescue beagle Guy to the UK when she married Harry.

The former actress chose animal welfare charity Mayhew as one of her first patronages.

When she moved to England to be with Harry she had to leave Bogart – a Labrador-shepherd mix – in the US.

Meghan has previously said the pair of rescue dogs “mean the absolute world” to her and has referred to them as “my loves” and “my boys”.

Guy and Bogart regularly featured on her social media account, with Guy even appearing in a patriotic knitted Union flag jumper.

UFC: Potential Edwards Trilogy Excites Usman

0

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is looking forward to facing Leon Edwards again in a potential trilogy fight following his loss on Sunday

The ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ is taking his knockout loss to Edwards in his stride and has already moved on as he told TMZ Sports that he’s “feeling great” and looking forward to their trilogy fight.

Usman was handed his first UFC loss with just one minute left in their five-round bout on Sunday after he got hit with a left head kick that sent him crumbling to the canvas.

Despite losing his belt, the 35-year-old is handling the situation incredibly well, better than most and even congratulated the Briton for landing the knockout blow.

“Everything is great,” Usman said. “It was just – what a shot. It was a great shot. I’m talking Hail Mary in the Super Bowl, last 10 seconds. That was a great shot, man.”

Usman says he’s watched the fight several times now and thinks his friends and family are actually more upset about the result than he really is.

“It’s like everyone’s sadder about it than I am,” he added. “Everyone’s more emotional about than I am but that’s because – for me, that’s a good thing ‘cause it lets me know that people care, people are invested.”

Usman however, sees the silver lining saying he now has the chance to inspire people as he continues his career.

“I’m in a rare opportunity. I have a rare opportunity now to just inspire and motivate and show people that you can fall and get back up. I’m excited.”

As for his next fight, Usman has made it clear that he wants to win the belt back.

UFC President Dana White has also hinted that the trilogy fight could take place in England.

“How do you not do a (rematch)? F***! Wembley? I don’t know,” White pondered before confirming Edwards vs Usman 3 will take place in the UK.

“I’m scared to go outside, and I’m definitely scared to go outside in England.

“I’m serious but joking about Wembley.

“Anything is possible in England now. It would be fun but scary at the same time. The weather isn’t the greatest over there in England.”

One win and one draw means Bayelsa Queens are one win away from qualification

Bayelsa Queens are one win away from qualifying for the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League  having taken four points from their first two games with the last one slated for the weekend.

Nigeria’s representative at the ongoing WAFU B Women’s CAF Champions League continued their impressive campaign following a goalless draw with Ghanaian clubside, Ampem Darkoa, in their second group stage game on Wednesday, 24th August, at the Yamoussoukro Stadium, Cote d’Ivoire.

It was a top group encounter after both sides had recorded a victory in their respective first games.

After the drawn encounter, Bayelsa Queens maintain the top spot following the goal difference they have over Ampem Darkoa. The Nigerian side had earlier trounced their Togolese side, Athleta 5-1 to stay first on the log over Ampem who defeated Burkina Faso’s USFA 3-0.

Both sides showed excellent performances during the game despite misplaced chances from both sides.

As it stands, Bayelsa Queens and Ampem Darkoa both have four points occupying the first and second position respectively.

Elsewhere, Burkina Faso’s USFA defeated Athleta Football Club 5-1 to clinch the third spot.

Bayelsa Queens final group stage game is against USFA scheduled for Saturday, 27th August. The winner of the group qualifies for the second phase to be hosted in Morocco in September.

World and Commonwealth Champion Tobi Amusan will be tested tomorrow as the Nigerian defends her Diamond League title in Zurich.

Amusan will return to track after her title defence at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and world record and title win at the Athletics World Championship in Oregon.

The 25-year-old, who ran 12.12 in the World Championships semifinals, will be hoping for another strong run with a field as strong as that in Lausanne.

Amusan will be up against Puerto Rico’s Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, world silver medallist Britany Anderson and former world record-holder Kendra Harrison, plus home star Ditaji Kambundji.

With world titles won and continental crowns claimed, many of the sport’s stars will clash again at the Athletissima meeting in Lausanne as the Wanda Diamond League continues towards its crescendo.

Global gold medallists are among those heading to the Swiss city on the hunt for performances that will secure their spot in the Diamond League final back in Switzerland – at the Weltklasse meeting in Zurich – on 7-8 September.

The stacked fields feature 12 recently-crowned individual world champions, the same number of individual Olympic gold medallists from Tokyo and nine champions from last year’s Diamond League.

Women’s U-17 World Cup: Indian Federation Asks FIFA To Lift Suspension

0

India’s football association has asked world governing body FIFA to lift the suspension imposed on it after the mandate of a court-appointed committee to govern the sport in the country was terminated this week.

India’s highest court disbanded the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in May and appointed a three-member committee to govern the sport, amend the body’s constitution and conduct elections that have been pending for 18 months.

FIFA banned the AIFF this month, citing “undue influence from third parties” and said the suspension would be lifted once the national body regains full control of its daily affairs.

On Monday, India’s Supreme Court ruled that the committee’s mandate “stands terminated” and the day-to-day management of the country’s soccer affairs will be handed back to the AIFF.

In a letter sent to FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura on Tuesday the AIFF apprised the world governing body of the court’s ruling.

“We request the FIFA… to reconsider their decision of suspending the AlFF,” Sunando Dhar, AIFF’s acting general secretary, wrote in the letter.

“Since the conditions set out in your letter for lifting of the suspension stand satisfied, we request that a order to that effect be passed at the earliest for the AIFF to continue with the smooth running of football in India.”

FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the AIFF letter.

India is scheduled to host the Under-17 women’s World Cup from Oct. 11-30 but their hosting right is under threat due to the FIFA suspension.

The elections of the AIFF, formerly led by FIFA Council member Praful Patel, were to be held by December 2020 but were delayed due to an impasse over amendments to its constitution.

The AIFF elections are currently scheduled to be held early next month.

On-Court Earnings: Serena Has No Rival

0

Veteran U.S. tennis player Serena Williams returns a ball during her match against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic during the National Bank Open in Toronto, Ontario, Canada August 10, 2022.

Serena Williams enters her final U.S. Open as a long shot to take home the trophy but her title as the biggest earner in the history of women’s tennis will remain for many years to come.

Since turning professional in 1995, Williams has amassed a mind-boggling $94.6 million in prize money, more than twice as much as the second name on the list, which happens to be her older sister Venus, with $42.3 million.

“It’s hard to overstate her success,” Victor Matheson, a sports economist at College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, said of the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

“There are few other examples of athletes in sport who are so far beyond the number two like that.”

Put another way, about 25,000 women have won prize money in the history of the WTA and Serena Williams has earned more than the bottom 80% of those players combined, he said.

“She has far and away the most career earnings among female athletes and is one of the very few female athletes to be solidly in the top 20 money earners among all athletes in a given year.

“It’s very unusual in sports to see a female athlete have this sort of financial presence.”

While it is difficult to quantify Williams’ financial impact on the sport as a whole, her career has coincided with huge growth in the women’s game.

In 1995, the WTA handed out $35 million in total prize money, an amount that jumped to $180 million in 2020, said Bob Dorfman, Sports Marketing Analyst at San Francisco’s Pinnacle Advertising.

But there is no doubt that Williams, who along with Venus was introduced to the predominately white sport at an early age by their father in Compton, California, helped bring in a new audience.

“It used to be very country clubby,” Dorfman said.

“Then she came along and it became accepted in public parks and people who never thought about playing tennis before started playing. And a lot more African American players came along.”

And as she turns her attention to growing her family and becoming a full-fledged business mogul, it is tough to see anyone replicating her on-court dominance anytime soon.

“There’s nobody on the horizon right now that’s going to come close to that,” Dorfman said.

“Hopefully somebody else will come along and dominate but nobody is doing it right now. I don’t think there’s anybody who has the drive and desire to win that Serena does.”

2023: Nollywood Actor Kenneth Okonkwo Defects To Labour Party

0

Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, has joined the Labour Party (LP), about one month after he left the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okonkwo resigned from the APC on 11 July over the party’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket.

The presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu, a Southern Muslim, recently picked Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State and Northern Muslim, as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.

The actor announced his defection to the LP in a series of social media posts on Wednesday.

Okonkwo said he was joining the LP to help enthrone good governance and achieve a new Nigeria.

He said the LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the symbol of the new Nigeria and called on all Nigerians to support the former governor to emerge the country’s president in 2023.

“It was an honour and a privilege to be welcomed into the Labour Party on the 23rd of August, 2022, at the Supreme God House, Apo, Abuja, by the entire executive of the FCT Labour Party, representing the National Executive of the party,” he said.

The actor attached some photographs of himself and some LP officials as he was being welcomed into the party.

“I feel loved and cherished by the visit of these distinguished officials of this people-centric party to our chambers which culminated in my officially joining the Labour Party as a member,” Okonkwo stated.

He said his membership of the LP would help him to contribute to working for the emergence of Obi as Nigeria’s president in 2023.

Okonkwo thanked the Dynamics Ambassadors for Peter Obi (DAPO) for facilitating his defection to the party.

The actor is the national spokesperson of DAPO, a political group canvassing support for the LP candidate.

“I am passionate for a new Nigeria and I will stop at nothing to see it come to pass,” he added.

He said although Nigeria is “so blessed” but regretted that the country had been “battered by bad leaders”.

In 2019, the ‘Living in Bondage’ actor explained the rationale behind joining the APC, which has shaky roots in South-east Nigeria.

Kobe Bryant’s Widow Awarded $16m Leaked Crash Photos Payout

0

Kobe Bryant’s widow has been awarded $16m (£13.6m) in damages over leaked graphic photos of the helicopter crash that killed the US basketball star and his daughter in 2020.

Vanessa Bryant, 40, said she had panic attacks after learning images taken by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and firefighters had been shared.

A federal jury now said the county must pay Mrs Bryant for emotional distress.

Co-plaintiff Christopher Chester will be paid $15m.

Mrs Bryant’s husband Kobe Bryant, 41, daughter Gianna, 13, and six family friends died when their helicopter crashed in California in January 2020. Chester lost his wife Sarah and daughter Payton in the crash.

A report by the Los Angeles Times claiming county employees took photos at the crash site and shared them with others has enraged the victims’ families.

Last November, the county agreed to pay $2.5m (£2.1m) over the emotional distress caused to two families who lost relatives in the crash – but Mrs Bryant refused to settle.

Sobbing on the witness stand last week, Mrs Bryant recalled being at home with her other children when she read the LA Times story.

“I bolted out of the house and I ran to the side of the house so the girls couldn’t see me. I wanted to run… down the block and just scream,” she said.

Mrs Bryant said she had felt “blindsided, devastated, hurt and betrayed” by news of the leak and “[lives] in fear every day of… having these images pop up” on social media.

“I don’t ever want to see these photographs,” she said. “I want to remember my husband and my daughter the way they were.”

Jurors at the trial heard how sheriff’s deputies and firefighters took gruesome mobile phone photos at the accident site and showed them to others, including at a bar and a gala event.

These employees “poured salt in an open wound and rubbed it in” with their actions, Mrs Bryant’s lawyer Luis Li said during opening statements last week.

A lawyer for the county unsuccessfully argued that “site photography is essential” and that the photos had not been posted anywhere publicly.

Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, played for the LA Lakers throughout his career and is considered one of the greatest players in the game’s history.
