Travel Chaos: UK’s Liz Truss Accuses French Authorities For Shortage Of staff To Man Borders

0

The UK’s foreign secretary on Saturday blamed France for the travel chaos faced by many travelers and holidaymakers at the Port of Dover in southeast England.

Liz Truss accused French authorities of not sending enough officials to man border posts and rejected French claims that Brexit was the cause of the chaos.

“The fact is that the French authorities have not put enough people on the border and I am in touch with the French authorities, I am very clear that we need to see action from them to resolve the terrible situation that people are facing,” Truss said in an interview.

When asked if the chaos faced at the port is a result of post-Brexit border checks, the foreign secretary said the current situation is the result of a lack of resources.

“This is a situation that is being caused by a lack of resources at the border and that is what the French authorities need to address and that is what I am being very clear about,” Truss added.

French authorities have rejected claims by the British government that it is at fault for the delays and logjams, arguing instead that Brexit and the erection of border checks are the cause for delays and obstruction.

The UK’s official union for borders, the ISU, said Brexit had resulted in stringent checks at the country’s borders.

California Oak: Thousands Evacuated As Fire Expands Speedily

Fueled by extreme heat and tinder dry forests and underbrush, a wildfire just west of Yosemite National Park spread overnight, quickly turning into one of the largest fires of the year and forcing thousands of residents to be evacuated from their homes, fire officials said.

Authorities said the Oak Fire, which is zero percent contained, was threatening to destroy about 2,000 homes on Saturday and some 3,000 people were evacuated.

By early Sunday, media reports said 6,000 people had been told to leave.

The cause of the fire, which started on Friday and has burned approximately 14,281 acres, is under investigation by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).

“Today the weather is expected to remain hot with minimum humidity between 5 and 10%, which will hamper firefighting efforts,” a fire report posted early Sunday said. “High tree mortality and dense fuels are throughout the fire area.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for Mariposa County because of the Oak Fire.

The declaration allows the state to access federal money and resources to battle the flames.

Yosemite, about an hour’s drive from Mariposa County, is home to some of the largest and oldest sequoia trees in the world. The redwoods were threatened by another blaze earlier this month, but firefighters managed to save them.

Separately, in Idaho, two firefighters died after their helicopter crashed on Saturday while they were battling a blaze called the Moose Fire, in a rural area near the Montana border, according to the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office.

Last year marked the worst wildfire season on record in California in terms of total acreage burned, with more than 4 million acres (1.6 million hectares) and over 10,000 homes and other structures destroyed.

At least 33 lives were lost. Over 10 million acres went up in flames across several Western states.

Old Port Harcourt Refinery: Rehabilitation Has Refining Capacity Of 60, 000 barrels Per Day – MD

0

The Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited, Ahmed Dikko, has assured that the rehabilitation of the Old Port Harcourt Refinery with a refining capacity of 60, 000 barrels per day would be completed and put to use by the first quarter of 2023.

He gave the assurance when the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on the state of the country’s refineries visited the facility in Rivers State for an on the spot assessment of the $1.5 billion dollar rehabilitation project of the facility.

Dikko said the Old Port Harcourt refinery, referred to as Area Five, would be the first of three phases of the project.

He said by the time the entire project is completed by the end of 2024, the facility would have a refining capacity of 210 bpd.

Dikko expressed confidence that they would stick to the timelines and within the cost approved for the project.

He said despite costing more, some of the equipment required for the rehabilitation had to be air freighted to ensure that they stick as much as possible to the schedule that they have.

“We plan to finish Area 5 by the first quarter of next year, so we can begin to run it. It is the old refinery. It is a 60, 000 barrels per day capacity plant and it is a priority for us at this point. The other parts of the refinery would come a few months after that.

“We are on track and managing the process very well and would continue to do the best we can at all times to ensure that we meet these expectations we put on ourselves so we all would be proud of all these activities and begin to have some refining capacity in Port Harcourt,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the House of Representatives for their support.

Chairman of the House Ad-Hoc Committee, Hon Ganiyu Johnson, who was conducted round the facility along with his members by the MD expressed satisfaction with the level of work.

He said: “So far on behalf of my committee members, we are satisfied with the level of work, because we did not expect this level of performance when we left Abuja. But after going round we are satisfied with the level of performance.

“Nigerians should bear with the company. We know that the solution to all oil subsidy is the refineries. The oil subsidy would be a thing of the past. We should be able to reduce it to the barest minimum.

“We owe Nigerians the duty to ensure this place is working. Because if these refineries are not working, we would continue to suffer and God forbid we hope it would not get to a stage an average man cannot buy fuel and that is why we really want to encourage you and support you and make sure you complete this refinery. Even if it is just Port Harcourt for now, it means we would be able to deliver 210, 000 bpd.”

He urged the MD to fast track the completion of the refinery and make sure it is delivered on schedule.

Young Nigerian Scientist Develops Cell Phone Without SIM Card From Scraps

0

Twenty two-year old Yobe-based young scientist, Umar Usman Dagona, is not strange to taking up challenges.

Dagona, in 2019 participated and won the Imaging National Chemistry Competition; beating over 1,700 others in Abuja.

His story was first featured on Kanem Trust two years back which prompted the Yobe State Government to offer him a teaching job in one of the secondary schools in the state.

Dagona, who teaches at a secondary school, has now developed a cellphone which operates without a sim card.

Sharing his story with Kanem Trust, he explained that he developed the cellphones from scraps of old phones and radio sets.

He explained that, “I use scraps and circuits from other phones and make my in-built multicellular connectivity. What costs me much is the transmitter. The transmitters cost me around N15,000 each.

“You know invention is full of trial and error; some experiments worked, some failed, but the hiccups did not stop me since I started this project in February, 2019. It took me nearly three years to develop these cell phones.

“What makes these cell phones different from ordinary phones is that they can make and receive calls without sim cards.

“They are working within close distance between 20 and 50 meters only,, but I am currently putting more effort to see how I can update their network, sensor, GPS, as well as other in-built systems to enable them make calls in a wide range”

On what motivated him to invent the cell phones, Dagona said he was working on how best he could bring solutions through science and technology as his aim is to ease communication within his academic environment.

He said the cell phones he invented would allow for easy student-lecturer interaction without network stress and recharge card cost.

he said, “These cell phones would help teachers and lecturers to make and receive calls from head of department or dean without any network failure, the address and identity of users would be inserted to enable them access each other.

“I am actually inspired by the way technology is always changing how things work in both developed and developing countries. Down here we are battling with the mindset that inventing new technology or idea is only a white man’s job, but let me tell you, even the wrist watches and some of the gadgets we use are being invented by children in the Western world.

“So I believe if we can read science in our schools, we should be able to produce meaningful projects that could change our lives.

“We have many young inventors who can develop solar, mechanical and electrical gadgets that Nigeria may use to generate more revenue like other developed and developing countries.

“With support from government and other responsible agencies we will achieve more inventing useful projects.”

Dagona has established his own science foundation and is currently working along with seven engineers on a new project. He has also participated in a young inventor’s contest where he showcased a proposed mini spying car.

He holds National Certificate in Education (NCE) in Chemistry from Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua, Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Exploring The Oldest Cathedral In The Americas, Cathedral Of Santa María La Meno, Dominican Republic

0

The Cathedral of Santa María la Menor is the oldest cathedral which can be found in the Americas and located in the capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo.

The groundbreaking began in 1514 with the intention that it will become the center for Vatican-led religious proselytizing in the New World, and it was completed by 1535.

The majestic Cathedral has a golden-tinted coral limestone frontal façade, and it combines the Gothic and Baroque styles of architecture.

The most striking features are the solid limestone walls and three doors, two of which are Gothic and the third main door which is plateresque.

The rest of the Cathedral has twelve side chapels, three aisles and a nave, whereas the roof of the nave is pitched and the aisles have cross vaulted ceilings.

With a total length of 54 meters (177 feet), width of each of the three aisles being 23 meters (75 feet), and the height to the vaulted ceilings being 16 meters (52 feet), its total area is 3,000 sq meters (32,000 sq feet).

First commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1504, the Cathedral is also contentiously known as the former resting place of famed explorer Christopher Colombus, with on-going disagreements between Spain and the Dominican Republic on where the remains of the illustrious navigator lay.

As it is not particularly large by European standards, it was one of the biggest churches in the Americas for the better part of a century, which today houses an impressive collection of artifacts and treasures.

Being an excellent example of 16th century Spanish-colonial architecture, nowadays this marvelous architectural masterpiece is protected by UNESCO, and since 1990 it is on the list of World Heritage Sites.

People flocking in to see and get impressed by this alluring marvel, it definitely is one of the most popular buildings which deserve to be seen in the capital Santo Domingo.

The team left Nigeria on Saturday in two groups via the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.

The first batch of Team Nigeria’s contingent to the 2022 Commonwealth Games is now in Birmingham, the host city of the event.

The team left Nigeria on Saturday in two groups via the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.

Musa Oshodi, president of the Nigeria Judo Federation, who was part of Nigeria’s first batch to the Games, confirmed the team’s arrival.

Mr Oshodi said the team arrived around 6 p.m. on Saturday and has already begun athletes registration in Birmingham.

Meanwhile, another batch of Team Nigeria’s contingent is expected to leave late Saturday night for the Games.

NAN reports that 94 athletes and 21 officials will represent the country in nine sports at the Games.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has charged the athletes to be focused and disciplined.

Mr Dare, in a statement released by his media unit, emphasised that there was going to be zero tolerance for doping by the Nigerian sports authorities.

He also stated the need for the athletes to be clean and fair.

I want to urge you to be disciplined. If you have any complaints, the Ministry has outlined how they can be resolved.

“There are just three layers for conflict resolution now and by the time you are getting to that third layer, you are getting to me.”

The minister recalled that some days earlier, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics had commended Nigeria for its zero-tolerance stance against doping.

The body also noted the seriousness Nigeria has now attached to its anti-doping campaign.

“Our increased number of testings and drive to do things right are some of the things you should reflect at this Games.

“So, as you leave for the Commonwealth Games remember to be good ambassadors of our dear country and strive to do us proud,” Mr Dare added.

The Games are scheduled to begin on Thursday and end on August 8 with about 72 countries expected to participate.

Bayern To Return For Osimhen, To Up Bid To 100m

0

Following Robert Lewandowski’s exit from the Allianz arena, Bayern are now set to return for Napoli forward Victor Osimhen

According to Corriere dello Sport, Napoli are reported to want €120 million for the 23-year-old’s services, but Bayern hope to negotiate that figure down closer to €100m.

The German champions had earlier said they could not consider a move for the Nigeria international as Partenopei’s valuation of the forward was too high.

Reports in Italy have now revealed that Bayern are preparing to make an offer for Osimhen in the summer of 2023 while Sports Bild, via iMiaSanMia report that they have also contacted Harry Kane’s team to speak about a potential deal ahead of the 2023-2024 campaign.

Meanwhile, Osimhen has refused a move to Premier League side Newcastle, with reports in Italy revealing that the Nigeria international views the move as a step down from the Partenopei.

Osimhen is one of Napoli’s prized pieces, and head coach Luciano Spalletti hopes that the Nigerian remains at Naples.

Osimhen joined Napoli from Lille two years ago and has scored 27 goals and made nine assists in 60 appearances for the Italian side, 18 of those goals coming in the 2021/22 season. Last season’s form has sparked interest from other clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United.

He has become the only player to play in two 10-0 wins in 2022 scoring four in Nigeria’s 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in the second game of the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers in June and netted one in Napoli’s 10-0 friendly win over Anaune last week Thursday.

Pre Season: Paul Onuachu Eyes 130th Career Goal

• Dessers targets fifth strike

Paul Onuachu will hopefully begin the new 2022/23 Belgian Jupiler season on a scoring note when Genk travels to face Club Bruges on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian striker who has notched up 129 career goals for the three clubs (Genk, Midtjylland and Velje Boldklub) he has featured for since he arrived in 2012 will be aiming to score his 130th goal in the encounter at the Jan Breydel Stadion.

Onuachu who joined Midtjylland from FC Ebedei played 181 games for the 2019/20 Danish champions scoring 74 goals and making 23 assists.

He had also played 13 games and bagged five goals with an assist while on a season loan spell at Vejle Boldklub.

His blistering performance for Midtjylland in 2019 saw Genk splash €9m for the Nigerian striker. In his debut season, he failed to justify his price tag as he could only bag 10 goals and two assists in 29 games but he bounced back in his second year at the club hitting 35 goals across all competitions in 41 games.

That feat saw him win Belgium’s best African player or player of African descent, the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year and top scorer’s awards for the 2020-21 season.

Last season, he found the back of the net 23 times in 43 appearances.

In March 2019, Onuachu scored Nigeria’s fastest-ever international goal against Egypt on his full debut, which helped the Super Eagles to their first victory over the Pharaohs in 29 years.

He then had to wait two years for his second goal, and this time he scrambled in Nigeria’s winner deep into injury time as they beat Benin 1-0 in Porto Novo in March to celebrate qualification to the 2021 Nations Cup.

Three days later, he scored his third goal international goal in 10 appearances and helped Nigeria coast to a 3-0 win over Lesotho as they wrapped up their qualifying campaign unbeaten, finishing top of Group L.

His compatriot, Cyriel Dessers, who returned to the club after a successful loan spell at Feyenoord could also feature in the encounter.

The Nigerian striker has scored four league goals for Genk and will be aiming to add to his tally.
