Nigerian League: NFF Hands Rivers United CAF Champions League Ticket Ahead Of Enyimba

0

Rivers United have qualified for the CAF Champions League ahead of Enyimba despite losing their final game of the season in the Nigerian Professional League on Thursday.

The Garden City team lost 1-0 to Sunshine Stars in Akure and would have finished in a distant sixth position.

However, they were awarded three points and three goals by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) disciplinary committee on Thursday over a disputed match against Jigawa Golden Stars where the Dutse-based club fielded an illegible player.

This ‘lifeline’ from the NFF now sees Rivers United finish in the second position just behind the already crowned champions Akwa United.

“Based on the foregoing, Jigawa Golden Stars FC shall forfeit 3 points and 3 goals to Rivers United FC in respect of the match, for fielding an ineligible player in breach of C5 of the NPFL Rules,” the NFF Disciplinary Committee said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Rivers United just like Enyimba garnered 66 points from 38 games but they pipped the defending champions courtesy of a superior goals difference.

The People’s Elephant thus ended the campaign in the third position which guarantees them only a place in the CAF Confederation Cup and sees Kwara United miss out on a continental ticket.

An unfortunate Kwara United who thought they had secured a continental ticket with their comprehensive 3-0 win over Katsina United in Ilorin have now been taken to the fourth position.

Elsewhere, Heartland, Abia Warriors, Sunshine Stars, and Wikki Tourists all escaped relegation after recording vital wins at home.

On their part, the trio of Warri Wolves, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, and Adamawa United will be campaigning in the lower division next season.

Federal Government Renames Ministry Of Science And Technology

The Nigerian government has renamed the Ministry of Science and Technology as Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The minister in charge, Ogbonnaya Onu, disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.

Onu said the name was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to bring about a shift in research and development that is industry and services’ demand-driven.

This ministry was first created as a separate ministry in 1985.

The minister said President Buhari has given the rebranded ministry the responsibility of overseeing that the innovation agenda of the Nation is achieved.

He said Nigeria will achieve a significant level of poverty alleviation after renaming the ministry and its new responsibilities.

Onu said the development will help bring about a shift in Research and Development (R&D) that is industry and services’ demand-driven, resulting in rapid commercialization and ultimately improved global competitiveness ranking of Nigeria.

He said this development will enable the reviewing of legal and policy frameworks as backup for institutional and organisational arrangements, effective coordination of the National Science and Innovation in the country.

He noted that there had been a missing link with statutory responsibility of the ministry and the change of name would address it.

“When we succeed in achieving this, it will lead us to R&D breakthroughs and inventions that are commercialisable. With the right policy and legal framework to protect intellectual property rights we can effectively promote commercialization in all activity sectors in the value chain for supply of raw materials, goods and services,” he said.

Onu noted that the result of the rebranding will generate irreversible indigenous industrialization, an adequate platform for higher productivity, improvement in value added components of the economy and job creation.

Kaduna State Government on Friday postponed resumption dates of both Primary and Secondary schools in the state, earlier scheduled to resume academic activities Aug. 9.

The postponement is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Shehu Muhammad and that of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan.

According to the statement, the decision was made based on the advise by security agencies, stressing that military operations are continuing while infrastructure projects are in high-risk areas.

“The government praises the doggedness and courage of officers and troops carrying out air and ground operations around Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Plateau and Zamfara boundaries”, it said.

The State Government had requested the military and police high commands to expand the operations to newly identified hide-outs.

“New dates for school resumption will be announced, based on further security assessments.

” While wishing the military and security agencies resounding success against the bandits, Kaduna government appeals for the understanding of all residents over any inconvenience caused by the postponement”, it said.

Two Myanmar Men Arrested In U.S. For Plotting To Kill U.N. Envoy

0

Two Myanmar citizens have been arrested in New York state for plotting with an arms dealer in Thailand – who sells weapons to the Burmese military – to kill or injure Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. authorities said on Friday.

Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, who represents Myanmar’s elected civilian government which was overthrown by the military in February, told Reuters on Wednesday that a threat had been made against him and U.S. authorities had stepped up his security

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said on Friday that Phyo Hein Htut, 28, and Ye Hein Zaw, 20, had each been charged with one count of conspiracy to assault and make a violent attack upon a foreign official, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The ambassador did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the charges. Myanmar’s junta fired him in February, but for now he remains the country’s U.N. envoy because the United Nations has not acknowledged the junta.

According to the legal complaint, Phyo Hein Htut told FBI investigators that the arms dealer in Thailand had contacted him online and offered him money to hire attackers to hurt the ambassador and force him to step down.

If the ambassador did not step down, then the arms dealer proposed that the attackers would kill him, according to the complaint. Phyo Hein Htut and the arms dealer then agreed on a plan to tamper with the ambassador’s car to cause a crash.

Nigeria Warns Kidnap Gangs Are Training With Jihadists

0

Nigerian officials have warned that IS-aligned jihadists are training criminal gangs engaged in mass kidnappings in the country’s northwest, in a sign of deepening cooperation between armed factions.

The development could complicate threats facing Nigeria’s security forces who are mired in a 12-year conflict with Islamist militants in northeast Borno while battling criminals across northwestern states.

In a July 23 memo sent to his officers Nigeria’s immigration chief Muhammad Babandede warned of mass “movement of bandits from Zamfara in northwest to Borno for intensive Boko Haram training.”

The memo said in view of this information, monitoring and surveillance around areas of jurisdiction should be intensified so as to gather information.

Since the conflict began in 2009, several factions emerged within Nigeria’s Boko Haram jihadist group, with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) now the dominant force after breaking away in 2016.

Since May, ISWAP has consolidated control in the northeast and security sources say militants forged a closer alliance with gangs in the northwest following the death of Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau in clashes with ISWAP fighters.

Northwest Nigeria has been long been terrorised by criminal gangs who raid villages, steal cattle, kidnap residents and burn homes after looting supplies.

Military deployments and peace deals have failed to end attacks by the bandits who hide in camps in Rugu forest, straddling Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara and Niger states.

Jailed Former South African President Zuma Taken To Hospital

0

South Africa’s jailed former president, Jacob Zuma, was taken to hospital for medical observation on Friday, prison authorities said, days before he was due to appear in court for a corruption trial.

Officials did not go into details on the condition of the 79-year-old, who is serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court at Estcourt prison in KwaZulu-Natal province.

Mzwanele Manyi, the spokesperson for the Jacob Zuma Foundation, told Reuters later in the afternoon the doctors were still seeing the former president and would advise him on whether he was fit to attend court on Tuesday.

The Department of Correctional Services said a routine observation at the prison had prompted authorities to take Zuma to an outside hospital for further examination. It did not name the hospital.

The department’s statement said “Everyone who is detained, including every sentenced prisoner, has the right to conditions of detention that are consistent with human dignity, including medical treatment,”.

Zuma last month asked the Constitutional Court to annul his jail sentence, partly on the grounds that he was suffering from an unspecified medical condition.

He was jailed for defying a Constitutional Court order to give evidence at an inquiry investigating high-level corruption during his nine years in office until 2018.

When Zuma handed himself in on July 7, protests by his supporters escalated into riots involving looting and arson that President Cyril Ramaphosa described as an “insurrection”.

Blinken Expresses Concern About China’s Nuclear Arsenal

0

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed deep concern about China’s growing nuclear arsenal during a meeting with foreign ministers of Asian countries and partner nations.

Addressing a virtual meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which groups more than two dozen countries, Blinken also called on China to cease “provocative” behavior in the South China Sea and “raised serious concerns about ongoing human rights abuses in Tibet, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang.

In his address, Blinken urged all ARF member states to press Myanmar’s military government to end violence and support the people of the country as they work to return to democratic governance, the statement said.

Both the Pentagon and State Department have aired concerns recently about China’s buildup of its nuclear forces following think-tank reports based on satellite imagery saying that China appears to be constructing hundreds of new silos for nuclear missiles.

Washington has repeatedly called on China to join it and Russia in a new arms control treaty and last month the State Department urged Beijing to engage with it “on practical measures to reduce the risks of destabilizing arms races.”

A 2020 Pentagon report estimated China’s nuclear warhead stockpile in “the low 200s” and said it was projected to at least double in size as Beijing expands and modernizes its forces.

Analysts say the United States has around 3,800 warheads, and according to a State Department factsheet, 1,357 of those were deployed as of March 1.

Blinken has taken part in a series of regional meetings this week at which he has sought to reinforce the U.S. message that it is serious about engaging with Asian countries to push back against Beijing.

9/11 Families Tell Biden To Declassify Files Or Skip Memorial

0

Family members of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks are opposing U.S. President Joe Biden’s participation in memorial events unless he declassifies government documents that they contend will show Saudi Arabian leaders supported the attacks.

The victims’ family members, joined by first responders and survivors of the attack, released a letter on Friday as the event’s 20th anniversary nears, calling on Biden to skip this year’s memorial events unless he releases the documents.

In a letter, the families said, ‘Twenty years later, there is simply no reason – unmerited claims of ‘national security’ or otherwise – to keep this information secret,”.

It went on to say that if President Biden reneges on his commitment and sides with the Saudi government, we would be compelled to publicly stand in objection to any participation by his administration in any memorial ceremony of 9/11.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a news conference that Biden remains committed a pledge made as a candidate “to work constructively on resolving issues relating to the previous administrations’ invocation of the states secrets privilege.”

In total, about 1,700 people directly affected by the 9/11 attacks signed the letter.

Saudi Arabia is being sued for billions of dollars by the families of roughly 2,500 of those killed, and by more than 20,000 people who suffered injuries, businesses and various insurers.

The Saudi embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
