President Buhari Underscores Importance Of Education At Global Summit

President Muhammadu Buhari says no Nigerian parent should joke with education, as they know that if their children or wards miss the opportunity of being educated, they have missed a lot.

He said this during a panel session on Thursday at the Global Education Summit in London.

The President said the size and population of Nigeria are challenges for any administration, but despite that, the government and people realize that education is the starting point for success.

On the panel with President Buhari were Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Faure Gnassingbe of Togo, Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, and Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi.

Each President spoke on the peculiarities of the education sector of his country, and how budgetary provisions would be increased to ameliorate the situation.

They all raised their hands as a sign of commitment to that resolution.

President Buhari had earlier committed to raising the budget for education by 50% in the next two years, and the country would attain 100% increase by 2025.

President Kais Saied, who assumed all executive powers after suspending parliament Tunisia, has launched an anti-corruption offensive, calling to account 460 businessmen accused of embezzling funds during the Ben Ali era.

Three days after suspending the activity of the Parliament for a month and taking over the entire executive power, the head of state has blasted the “bad economic choices” made in recent years in Tunisia.

Saied, who has not yet named the Prime Minister, attacked “those who plunder public money, citing an old report of a commission of inquiry on corruption and embezzlement under the former regime of dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Faced with continued inflation that undermines the purchasing power of Tunisians, Mr. Saied also asked traders and wholesalers to “lower prices.

He also called for a revival of phosphate production, one of the few natural resources of the country. Former flagship of the Tunisian economy, the Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG) has seen its production collapse since the 2011 revolution, due to a lack of investment and repeated social unrest.

At the same time, the president announced the establishment of a crisis unit to manage the Covid-19 pandemic, supervised by a senior military officer.

Already hit by unemployment and inflation, Tunisia is facing a new epidemic peak that has provoked the anger of the population in recent weeks. The small North African country of about 12 million people has one of the worst official death rates in the world, with 19,000 deaths linked to the new coronavirus.

Three American citizens died in the crash, along with the pilot, as the aircraft burst into flames upon impact following a “stunt that went horrifically wrong

The residents of the house, including children, had a miraculous escape, fleeing the devastated building as a fireball ripped through it.

Dramatic footage shows black plumes emerging from the burning home after the aircraft plummeted to the ground near the village of Sheparivts.

Authorities were seen racing to the property as one shell-shocked homeowner filmed the devastation left after the tragic incident.

The four victims of the crash have since been named as Avrohom Fromowitz, Heshy Weiss, Lazer Brill – all of whom are Jewish American citizens – as well as pilot Ihor Tabanyuk, 60.

The group were believed to be visiting holy sites in Europe ahead of Mr Fromowitz’s wedding.

STUNT GONE WRONG

Early witness reports suggest that there is suspicion that the pilot had been doing aerial stunts moments before the crash as witnesses described seeing the aircraft attempt loops in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Mr Tabanyuk, who owned a local airfield, was known for performing aerobatic stunts.

His friend Dmitry Komarov, a Ukrainian TV travel host, said: “He was one of the best pilots in Ukraine.

“A man who devoted his whole life, time, strength and energy to aviation.”

Mr Kemerovo also suggested that the crash may have been caused by a failure of control due to a technical issue, a loss of consciousness by the pilot, or a passenger interfering with the piloting.

“It is important to conduct a detailed investigation,” he added.

The crash left the home devastated, as resident Olga Korcheva, 39, reportedly fled the property with her teen children.

Meanwhile homeowner Valery Pomogaev, 67, said: “My eldest daughter with her children, a daughter and son, were inside.

“They heard the explosion.

“First there was an impact, then an explosion, and they rushed out.”

His granddaughter, Anastasia Korcheva then posted a video showing damage to the inside of the house and blamed the actions of the “inexperienced pilot”.

Okagbare, Nwokocha, 4x400m Mixed Relay Team To Open Nigeria’s Medal Charge In Athletics

Despite the disqualification of some Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, due to their failure to meet up with the mandatory three out-of-competition tests, two of the country’s medal hopefuls, Blessing Okagbare and Grace Nwokocha, will be taking to the tracks on Friday in the women’s 100 metres.

Okagbare and Nwokocha are heading straight to the heats and will not be going through the rigours of competing in the preliminary rounds of the 100m.

Okagbare made her debut at the Olympics in 2008 at the Beijing Games where she won a silver medal in the women’s long jump.

The 32-year-old has since been a permanent fixture at subsequent Olympic Games, getting to the 100m final at the London Games in 2012 but placing 8th.

Okagbare has been on fire since the start of the year and shortly after winning her eighth national title at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Lagos, said she is looking forward to a glorious outing in Tokyo.

With a Personal Best of 10.79seconds, although she ran a wind-aided 10.63s in Lagos, Okagbare is confident of at least getting to the final of the 100m, where anything can happen.

“Since the start of this season, I see myself as very ready,” Okagbare said at the national trials in Lagos.

“I feel healthy, stronger and like the real Blessing Okagbare again. I am really happy that this time came down,” the national record holder said at the time, referring to her wind-aided time at the trials.

“It will boost my confidence, my faith and my trust in God. I just hope this same thing happens at the Olympics.”

For Nwokocha, the rave of the moment, Tokyo 2020 will be her first Olympics and she will be hopeful of making it a memorable one.

The 20-year-old came to limelight at the start of the year, running two new personal bests while also winning the 100m title at the National Sports Festival in Benin City, Edo State.

Her current PB and seasons best of 11.09s places her 81st in the world at the moment.

“My target for the Tokyo Olympic Games, is to do better than what I have been doing by improving my time in the 100m and 200m,” said Nwokocha, who has a PB and seasons best of 22.79s in the 200m.

Nwokocha will also take part in the 200m and 4x100m relays and hopes to make it a memorable maiden Olympics by appearing in the finals of all the events she will competing in.

“I hope to be at the final of each event and by God’s grace I want to return home with a medal, especially in the 4x100m. That is my wish in Tokyo.”

She added: “I want to put in my best in Tokyo by making my country proud. I believe that when I make it to the final, it will please God that I will win a medal for Nigeria.”

Kano Govt Denies Banning Women From Driving

0

Kano State Government has debunked rumours on its purported plan to ban women, regardless of their faith, from driving in the state.

The denial was contained in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information Mr Muhammed Garba, and made available to newsmen on Thursday, in Kano.

He described the trending online report as “fallacious” and baseless, with no credible source.

“The trending story lacks credibility and that is why it is wholly attributed to a source that cannot be substantiated,’’ he added.

Garba pointed out that the state government would not decide in “a secret meeting” a critical issue that had to do with its teeming populace, adding that even in Saudi Arabia, the authorities had in 2018 lifted the decades-old law that banned women from driving.

He expressed delight that some of the scholars who were quoted to have supported the alleged ban, had already dissociated themselves from it.

Nigerian Police Chief Indicted In U.S. Over ‘Hushpuppi’ Fraud

0

A Nigerian police chief has denied involvement in what a U.S. indictment describes as an elaborate scheme to defraud a Qatari businessperson of more than $1 million, masterminded by a celebrity fraudster known as “Hushpuppi”.

Abba Kyari, a high-ranking officer who has received multiple honours, was one of six people indicted over the alleged scheme, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California.

Kyari, who is in Nigeria and faces a U.S. arrest warrant, denied any wrongdoing in a statement on his Facebook page on Thursday. The Nigerian police force said in a statement it had ordered an internal review of the allegations.

Nigeria has long struggled to control the problem of financial scams, often perpetrated by email and involving complex webs of deceit.

Hushpuppi, whose real name is Ramon Abbas and who built up a large social media following in Nigeria with posts detailing his lavish lifestyle, was extradited from Dubai to the United States in July 2020 to face criminal charges.

He has been in U.S. custody in Los Angeles ever since, and the Attorney’s Office announced this week that he had pleaded guilty to charges relating to schemes that cumulatively caused more than $24 million in losses to their victims.

The newly unsealed federal grand jury indictment details a scheme whereby Hushpuppi and his accomplices allegedly faked the financing of a Qatari school by playing the roles of bank officials.

Kyari was alleged to have taken money from Hushpuppi as payment for arranging for one of his accomplices to be locked up in Nigeria after a dispute among the conspirators.

In his Facebook post, Kyari denied taking money from Hushpuppi and gave a different account of his dealings with the fraudster.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office said an arrest warrant against Kyari had been issued in the United States. He declined to comment on whether U.S. authorities would seek his extradition from Nigeria.Reporting by Tife Owolabi, Felix Onuah and Estelle Shirbon, editing by Mark Heinrich and Nick Macfie
