Live Camera Update For 300 Roads Launched In Lagos

0

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Jidesanwoolu, has launched the lagostraffic961 ‘Live Camera Update’ Project at the station’s premises, Radio House, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

The ‘Live Camera Update’ will cover over 300 roads and highways in the state (in the first instance and up to 3000 later) and will also help in capturing happenings in Lagos which is in line with the Lagos Smart City project.

This project is aimed at delivering timely, accurate, detailed and above all real-time traffic information to the motoring public and commuters within and outside the State.

The Governor was represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

How Will This Work?

Traffic surveillance cameras work by using a combination of image capture and video recording technologies.

These cameras are strategically placed at various locations on roads and highways to monitor and record traffic conditions in real-time.

Image capture technology involves the use of high-resolution cameras that capture still images of the traffic scene.

These cameras are equipped with lenses that can zoom in and out to capture clear images of vehicles, license plates, and other relevant details.

The cameras are often equipped with infrared sensors to ensure visibility in low-light conditions.

Video recording technology is also employed to capture continuous footage of the traffic flow.

This involves the use of cameras that record video at a specific frame rate, typically 30 frames per second.

The recorded video can be stored locally on the camera or transmitted to a central monitoring station for further analysis.

In recent years, there have been advancements in traffic surveillance camera technology.

For example, some cameras now have built-in artificial intelligence capabilities that can automatically detect and track vehicles, pedestrians, and other objects of interest.

This allows for more efficient monitoring and analysis of traffic patterns.

Furthermore, some cameras are equipped with advanced analytics software that can detect and alert authorities to specific events, such as accidents, traffic congestion, or suspicious activities.

This helps in improving response times and overall traffic management.

Overall, traffic surveillance cameras play a crucial role in monitoring and managing traffic conditions.

They provide valuable data for traffic engineers, law enforcement agencies, and city planners to make informed decisions and improve the efficiency and safety of road networks.

Enyimba FC Vs Wydad Casablanca: Africa Football League Quater-final First Leg Preview

0

Nigerian club, Enyimba FC will lock horns vs Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in a Africa Football League quater-final first leg clash on Sunday, October 22.

TIME: That match will kick-off by 7pm

VENUE: The 30000 capacity, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State capital is venue for the Enyimba FC Vs Wydad Casablanca showdown.

Enyimba FC have adopted the nearby venue for it’s Africa Football League campaign after it’s home ground in Aba fell short of approved standard.

FORM GUIDE: The People’s Elephants have had a poor start to the 2023/2024 season, with one win in their last four games in all competitions.

The Nigeria Premier Football League champions were knocked out of the CAF Competition by Al Ahly Benghazi on (4-3) aggregate, while their domestic campaign has yielded one win in two games. A 3-2 win over Akwa United FC of Uyo on whose home ground they will face Wydad on Sunday evening.

Enyimba Aba are one of the most successful teams in Africa and are well prepared to take on the best team in Morocco.

For Wydad Casablanca, their pedigree as three-time African Champion plus twenty-two domestic league titles makes them a giant in Africa.

Just months ago, the Moroccan club failed to retain the CAF Champions League last season as they were overthrown by Al Ahly.

Wydad Casablanca have lost once since the season began, scoring thirteen times while conceding four goals

The Red Castle are a very organized and disciplined team, and with their recent performances, they’ll definitely give Enyimba FC a good game in Uyo.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID: Both teams have talked tough ahead of the match which is the third game of the maiden Africa Football League campaign.

Enyimba FC Head Coach, Finidi George says his players are not under pressure and so will do their best to make the fans proud.

For the visitors, the fact that no home team has won in the AFL yet is enough boost to play their game against the People’s Elephants, according to their Coach, ‘ Wydad is ready for the Enyimba FC challenge ‘.

PREDICTION TIPS: The Elephants have just a win in their last four, while Wydad Casablanca have been in blistering form, scoring three times in each of their last three games.

Despite their slow start to the season, Enyimba are cut out for games like this. They will likely dominate this fixture; however, the Red Castle are not one of the sides to be intimidated on the road.

The Elephants conceded twice in their most recent game, and we are confident they won’t be able to shut out the visitors so expect both teams to score in a match that could go either way.

Makhachev makes light work of Volkanovski, retains title

Kamaru Usman lost to Khamzat Chimaev in the Welterweight title fight at UFC 294, with the champion retaining his title via unanimous decision in Abu Dhabi.

The Nigerian nightmare, who took the fight on short notice, came into the fight on the back of successive defeats to Leon Edwards in the past year. He was keen to defeat Chimaev and become a double champion in the UFC.

Chimaev showed his strength and resilience in the first round, dominating Usman with his superior grappling and striking, and the Nigerian took quite a beating in the round but survived.

The second and third rounds were much more even, as Usman took the fight to Chimaev, who revealed after the fight that he had broken his hand in the first round.

With neither fighter securing a knockout, the decision went to the judges, who ruled in favour of Chimaev. Two of the judges ruled the fight to have been won 29-27 on points by Chimaev, while the third one ruled that it ended 28-28. Chimaev claimed the win by majority decision.

In the main event at UFC 294, Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev proved that his previous win over Alexander Volkanovski was no fluke as he stopped the Australian in the first round of their rematch.

Makhachev saw a deadly left kick connect with the head of Volkanovski, sending the dazed man reeling as he went down. The champion followed with some brutal punches and the referee stopped the fight, with Makhachev winning via knockout.

U.S. takes possession of Alaska from Russia

  • On October 18, 1867, the United States officially acquired Alaska from Russia through the Alaska Purchase or Treaty of Cession. The US government paid $7.2 million for the territory, initially seen as unimportant but later found to be rich in resources.

PURCHASE OF ALASKA

The purchase of Alaska in 1867 marked the end of Russian efforts to expand trade and settlements to the Pacific coast of North America, and became an important step in the United States rise as a great power in the Asia-Pacific region.

Beginning in 1725, when Russian Czar Peter the Great dispatched Vitus Bering to explore the Alaskan coast, Russia had a keen interest in this region, which was rich in natural resources and lightly inhabited.

As the United States expanded westward in the early 1800s, Americans soon found themselves in competition with Russian explorers and traders. St. Petersburg, however, lacked the financial resources to support major settlements or a military presence along the Pacific coast of North America and permanent Russian settlers in Alaska never numbered more than four hundred.

Defeat in the Crimean War further reduced Russian interest in this region.

For three decades after its purchase the United States paid little attention to Alaska, which was governed under military, naval, or Treasury rule or, at times, no visible rule at all.

Seeking a way to impose U.S. mining laws, the United States constituted a civil government in 1884. Skeptics had dubbed the purchase of Alaska “Seward’s Folly,” but the former Secretary of State was vindicated when a major gold deposit was discovered in the Yukon in 1896, and Alaska became the gateway to the Klondike gold fields.

The strategic importance of Alaska was finally recognized in World War II. Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959.

Himalayan Lake Floods: India To Declare 79 Missing People, Dead

0

India has begun work to designate as dead at least 79 people who went missing in floods unleashed by a Himalayan glacial lake outburst two weeks ago, a senior official said on Friday, taking the death toll in the disaster to 179.

The floods triggered by torrential rain and overflow from the Lhonak Lake were among the region’s worst in more than 50 years, washing away homes and bridges in the northeastern state of Sikkim, wedged between Bhutan, China and Nepal.

The state government has begun the process for such a designation of those still missing, by seeking the federal government’s permission, since the law specifies an interval of seven years before a missing person can be declared dead.

“We have not called off the rescue efforts, but after two weeks it will be a miracle (to find them),” said state official Anil Rai.

Sikkim retrieved at least 40 bodies in the flood aftermath and the neighbouring state of West Bengal 60, said officials from the two states who are working to reconcile the official toll and eliminate double counting.

As climate change warms high mountain regions, many communities face the risk of dangerous glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Lakes holding water from melted glaciers can brim over and burst, sending torrents rushing down mountain valleys.

More than 200 such lakes now pose a high hazard to Himalayan communities in Bhutan, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan, research in 2022 showed.

The Himalayas, or Himalaya is a mountain range in Asia, separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.

The range has some of the Earth’s highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest; more than 100 peaks exceeding elevations of 7,200 m (23,600 ft) above sea level lie in the Himalayas.

The Himalayas abut or cross five countries: Nepal, China, Pakistan, Bhutan and India. The sovereignty of the range in the Kashmir region is disputed among India, Pakistan, and China.

The Himalayan range is bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, and on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

Some of the world’s major rivers, the Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo–Brahmaputra, rise in the vicinity of the Himalayas, and their combined drainage basin is home to some 600 million people; 53 million people live in the Himalayas.

The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of South Asia and Tibet.
