Researchers Discover Antidote for world’s most poisonous mushroom

0

Scientists from Australia and China said they may have found an antidote for the world’s most poisonous mushroom, according to a new study published in the journal, Nature Communications on Tuesday.

The researchers are from Australia’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the University of Sydney and China’s Sun Yat-sen University.

They believe that a medical dye already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and widely in use can act as an antidote for death cap mushroom poisoning.

The researchers used genome-wide CRISPR screening to identify the main toxin produced by the death cap mushrooms, called α-amanitin, and the key protein (STT3B) needed for it to have a toxic effect.

They identified it by using a virtual drug screening, a fluorescent dye called indocyanine green and tested it on human cells and mice exposed to the toxin.

It acted like an antidote and helped the animals survive.

They said more work was needed to understand how indocyanine green inhibits α-amanitin and to assess its safety for use in humans.

Mushroom poisoning is the main cause of mortality in food poisoning incidents worldwide, according to the study.

Over 90 per cent of mushroom-related deaths worldwide were caused by death cap mushrooms.

The main toxin causes high rates of irreparable liver or kidney damage and mortality following consumption.

No specific antidote is currently available.

FEC Approves Electronic Birth, Death Registration

0

The Federal Executive Council has approved the development of an Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System, a platform that will effectively keep electronic records of births and death registrations.

It also approved the establishment of an Aviation Leasing Company under Public Private Partnership.

The move, FEC said, was to inject private sector funds into infrastructure development and boost the nation’s economic growth.

In a statement released by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission on Wednesday, the Acting spokesperson, Ifeanyi Nwoko, said both approvals were given following the issuance of Full Business Case compliance certificates by the agency and Federal Ministry of Aviation as grantor.

He added that the ALC which will be executed by Messrs AJW Consortium as concessionaires, is to provide an opportunity for local leases of aircraft to both domestic and international carriers, hereby alleviating the problems of aircraft/engine leasing, costly lease rates and high insurance premium charges to Nigerian airlines.

The statement read partly, “The Aviation Leasing Company will facilitate the ease of doing business for foreign lessors with Nigerian domestic Airlines being a one-stop-shop thereby limiting capital flight and the strong demand on forex. The project will create employment opportunities for Nigerians which will have a multiplier effect on the economy.

“The ALC will also provide leasing opportunities for Nigerian and African Airlines to boost their fleet size, alleviate the problems of aircraft leasing and high insurance premium charges, provide an alternative to foreign lessors and introduce competition which would relax the terms and conditions currently obtainable, thereby facilitating growth and development.”

Continuing, Ifeanyi noted that the company will commence with leasing 8 aircraft in its first year of operation, increasing the portfolio as it grows to 50 leased aircraft after the 7th year and remains constant at 70 leased aircraft by 2034.

“After approximately 7 years, the company will commence outright purchase aircraft (instead of lease) once the portfolio exceeds 50 leased aircraft.”

On the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System, the ICRC disclosed that N5.3 billion private sector funds will be injected by the concessionaire, Messrs Barnksforte Technologies Limited.

The spokesperson explained, “The project which has the National Population Commission as Grantor seeks to capture and verify births and deaths in Nigeria, provide attestation and verification of certificates to end users on the platform. Prior to this, these registrations have been carried out manually, a process that has been characterized by low coverage and inadequate data.

“The private party will Design, Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer the Project to the Government at the end of the concession period of 15 years.”

“The first step is to source for funds and to ensure that sponsors support us in our bid to organize regular competitions.

We will explore the Riverine areas. We need to go there to get most of the raw talents, in addition to what the state government has proposed. We need to put the athletes in camp, where they will train regularly.’’

“This year, we should be able to have a competition to help discover talents. The next thing will be to keep the discovered athletes in camp to help enhance their skills in swimming for future competitions.”

Tinubu, Shettima Resist Election Petition Proceedings Live Broadcast

0

The President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and his Vice, Kashim Shettima, have urged the Presidential Election Petition Court to dismiss the application by Atiku Abubakar and the People’s Democratic Party for a live broadcast of proceedings.

They argued that the relief sought by the applicants are not such that the court could grant it.

The respondents stated that the motion is an abuse of the processes of the court,”

Besides describing the application as frivolous, they said the court is not a soapbox, stadium or theatre where the public should be entertained.

Through their team of lawyers, led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, they wondered why a petitioner would file an application to distract the court and waste its precious time.

They stated, in the counter affidavit, that the application relates to policy formulation of the court, which is outside the PEPC’s jurisdiction as constituted.

“The application also touches on the powers and jurisdiction invested in the President of the Court of Appeal by the Constitution, over which this honourable court as presently constituted cannot entertain.

“The application touches on the administrative functions, which are exclusively reserved for the President of the Court of Appeal.

“The application is aimed at dissipating the precious judicial time of this honourable court.

“The said application does not have any bearing with the petition filed by the petitioners before this honourable court.

“It is in the interest of justice for this honorable court to dismiss the said application filed by the petitioners,” they said.

In an attached written address, the respondents faulted the applicants’ reference to the fact that virtual proceedings were allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They argued that Atiku and his party failed to draw the court’s attention to the fact that practice directions were made by the respective courts for the exercise.

“Another angle to this very curious application is the invitation it extends to the court to make an order that it cannot supervise.

“The position of the law remains, and we do submit that the court, like nature, does not make an order in vain, or an order which is incapable of enforcement,” the respondents stated.

More so, they stated that “At the very best, this application is academic, very otiose, very unnecessary, very time-wasting, most unusual and most unexpected, particularly, from a set of petitioners, who should be praying for the expeditious trial of their petition.

“Beyond all these, it is our submission that the court of law must and should always remain what it is, what it should be and what it is expected to be: a serene, disciplined, hallowed, tranquil, honourable and decorous institution and place.

The Labour Party also, at a press conference, said they would be petitioning the courts to let the proceedings be streamed life.

Man Utd sale: Sheikh Jassim Makes Improved Offer To Buy Club

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has made an improved offer to buy Manchester united.

A fresh bid was submitted on Tuesday morning amid further talks involving the Raine group, who are handling the sale.

The Qatari banker and sir Jim Radcliffe’s INEOS group are the two main parties looking to buy the old Trafford club, With Both groups submitted third bids at the end of April.

It is understood the new bid is for 100% of the club, will clear United’s debt and includes a separate fund directed solely at the club and local community.

Figures in march showed united owed £969.6m through a combination of gross debt, bank borrowings and outstanding transfer fees with associated payments.

The glazer family announced in November they were considering selling Manchester united as they “explore strategic alternatives”.

Although there has been no response from the glazer family since the last bid deadline on 28 April, there has been increasing confidence in the INEOS camp that their efforts to buy united would be successful.

It is understood one of Radcliffe’s suggestions has been to lower the amount of united he wanted to buy from an initial 69% for all the glazer stake to just over 50%, which would allow co-chairmen Joel and Avram glazer to retain some involvement.

Avram glazer followed up his appearance at the carabao cup final in February by watching United’s women’s team lose in the fa cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.

There has been no indication when the glazer family will make a decision over the future direction of united.

They bought the club for £790m in 2005 and have established a valuation of between £5bn and £6bn for it.
