Sudan’s General Burhan Dissolves Government

0

Sudan’s leading general declared a state of emergency Monday, hours after his forces arrested the acting prime minister and other senior government officials in what the information ministry said amounted to a military coup.

In a televised address, General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan announced that he was dissolving the country’s ruling Sovereign Council, as well as the government led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

Burhan is a military officer who headed the Sovereign Council, a power-sharing ruling body.

Burhan said a new technocratic government would lead the country to elections and then set the date for elections at July 2023.

He said quarrels among political factions prompted the military to intervene. He also announced the suspension of the anti-corruption task force.

In response, thousands flooded the streets of the capital, Khartoum, and its twin city of Omdurman to protest the apparent military takeover.

Footage shared online appeared to show protesters blocking streets and setting fire to tyres as security forces used tear gas to disperse them. Protesters could be heard chanting, “The people are stronger, stronger” and “Retreat is not an option!” as plumes of smoke filled the air. Videos on social media also showed large crowds crossing bridges over the Nile to the centre of the capital.

Armed forces fired live rounds at Sudanese people who took to the streets of Khartoum to protest against Monday’s apparent coup, according to the information.

There has been a significant amount of international reaction and while the US has said it is extremely alarmed, the European Union has said it expresses the utmost concern at what is going on.

UN Delegation Arrives In Mali To Mount Pressure On Junta

0

UN Security Council delegates, led by the ambassadors from the US, France and Niger, arrived in Bamako for two days of talks to push the military-led interim government for a return to democracy after two coups in nine months.

The delegation is adding to international pressure on coup leaders to abide by a February 27 deadline set by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS for a presidential election.

Kenya’s ambassador to the UN, Martin Kimani said it would be ideal for them to have a better understanding of the situation in Mali in order to know how best to help.

Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Abdoulaye Diop welcomed the delegation adding that the meeting would help to give a progress report by the government.

In a statement released on Friday Human Right Watch had urged the UN mission to use this as an oppourtunity to encourage Malian authorities to “investigate a spate of alleged summary executions, enforced disappearances, and detentions by government security forces”.

It is alleged that since September, at least 14 men last seen in the custody of security forces, had disappeared or remain in “incommunicado detention”.

The bodies of three men allegedly executed after their arrest by solders earlier this month were found nearby an army camp.

HRW Sahel director Corine Dufka is reported to have said “Mali’s transitional government shouldn’t be standing back while its soldiers are linked to a wave of abuses.

Military intervention by France and the UN has failed to quell an Islamist insurgency that has swept into central Mali and spilled over into neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, leaving thousands dead and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Bayern ready to offer over €100m for Real Madrid target Victor Osimhen

Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs with Bayern Munich reportedly ready to dole out over €100 million for the Nigerian striker who has caught the attention of Real Madrid with his early season form.

Osimhen managed just 10 goals in his debut season with Napoli, no thanks to a spate of injuries and a bout of Covid-19 that led many to think that the Italian side may have goofed in spending a club record €81.3 million to lure the Nigerian from Lille to Naples.

Now in his second year with the Blues, the 22-year-old has now scored nine times in just 11 appearances for Napoli, with his latest arriving in last Thursday’s 3-0 demolition of Legia Warsaw in the Europa League.

And, according to Spanish newspaper, AS, Osimhen has been in the crosshairs of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, with the German side ready to dole out over €100m to land the Nigerian international at the end of the season, possibly as a replacement for the ageing Robert Lewandowski, who is also on the radar of Real Madrid.

Let Computers Do It: Film Set Tragedy Spurs Call To Ban Guns

0

As a shocked and saddened industry was reminded this week, many productions still use guns — real guns — when filming. And despite rules and regulations, people can get killed, as happened last week when Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after he was handed a weapon and told it was safe.

The tragedy has led some in Hollywood, along with incredulous observers, to ask: Why are real guns ever used on set, when computers can create gunshots in post-production? Isn’t even the smallest risk unacceptable?

For Alexi Hawley, it is. “Any risk is too much risk,” the executive producer of police drama “The Rookie” announced in a staff memo Friday, saying the events in New Mexico had “shaken us all.”

There “will be no more ‘live’ weapons on the show,” he wrote in a note.

Instead, he said, the policy would be to use replica guns, which use pellets and not bullets, with muzzle flashes added in post-production.

Another film director, Craig Zobel, called for the entire industry to follow suit and said gunshots on that show were added after filming, even though on previous productions he has used live rounds.

“There’s no reason to have guns loaded with blanks or anything on set anymore,” Zobel wrote on social media. “Should just be fully outlawed. There are computers now. The gunshots on ‘Mare of Easttown’ are all digital.

Bill Dill — a cinematographer who taught Hutchins, a rising star in her field, at the American Film Institute — expressed disgust in an interview over the “archaic practice of using real guns with blanks in them, when we have readily available and inexpensive computer graphics.”

Dill, said there was added danger from real guns because “people are working long hours” on films and “are exhausted.”

“There’s no excuse for using live weapons,” he said.

A petition was launched over the weekend for real guns to be banned from production sets.

Former Nigeria captain Ime Udoka thrilled after first NBA win as a coach

0

Former captain of Nigeria’s national men’s basketball team Ime Udoka is happy to have finally secured his first win as a head coach in the National Basketball Association after leading the Boston Celtics to their maiden win of the on-going season.

The Celtics, 17-time winners of the NBA championship, defeated the Rockets 107-97 on Sunday night in Houston to record their first win of the 2021/2022 season.

Although Udoka made mention of how long it took to get his first win, it didn’t take that long. Three games to be exact.

But it probably felt like an eternity from Udoka’s vantage point after starting the season off with back-to-back losses.

Sudan’s military dissolves civilian government and arrests leaders

0

Sudan’s military has dissolved civilian rule, arrested political leaders and declared a state of emergency.

Gen Abdel Fattah Burhan, who had been heading a joint council with civilian leaders, blamed political infighting.

Protesters have taken to the streets of the capital, Khartoum, and there are reports of gunfire.

Military and civilian leaders have been at odds since long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was overthrown two years ago and a transitional government set up.

Although the country remains in a deep economic crisis, there had been more international support – and a military takeover will put that hugely at risk.

NBA: Anti-Vaccine Demonstrators Support Kyrie Irving In New York

0

Anti-vaccine demonstrators gathered outside the Barclays center on Sunday to show their support for Brooklyn nets guard Kyrie Irving before his team’s NBA home opener, with placards reading “stand with Kyrie”, “my body, my choice”.

Irving has refused to get vaccinated against covid-19 and is not allowed to play or practice with his team because of local vaccine rules.

Some protesters broke through barriers outside the arena before being confronted by security.

No arrests or injuries were reported.

The beginning of the new NBA season has been dominated by debate over the Covid-19 vaccine, with some players saying they will not get jabbed and others refusing to confirm their vaccination status.

Irving has recently shared microchip claims about the Moderna vaccine on social media and admits to being a “big conspiracy theorist”.

Without Irving, the Nets blew a half-time lead and lost 111-95 on their home return as the Charlotte Hornets won their third game in a row.

Fresh Ethiopia airstrikes hit new Tigray targets

0

The Ethiopian government says the military has launched air strikes on rebel positions in the north and west of the Tigray region – expanding the range of its aerial bombardments.

Previous air strikes over the last week had all been in the regional capital Mekelle, but these ones hit Adwa and Mai Tsebri.

The government said they had targeted Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) facilities but a number of civilians are reported to have died.

A TPLF spokesperson said no military targets had been hit and suggested missiles had struck buildings already destroyed by Ethiopian and Eritrean forces.

With all phone communication cut off in Tigray it will be hard to verify the outcome of the air strikes – especially as they are in fairly remote areas.

Auction Record: Michael Jordan Sneakers Sell For Nearly $1.5 Million

A pair of sneakers worn by NBA superstar Michael Jordan early in his career sold for nearly $1.5 million on Sunday, setting a record price at auction for game-worn footwear, Sotheby’s said.

The white leather shoes with the red Nike swoosh and soles were worn by the iconic player in the fifth game of his rookie season with the Chicago bulls, when Nike’s Jordan-affiliated brand was only just taking off as a sensation both on and off the court.

The astronomical price easily beat the record held by a pair of Nike air Jordans which sold for $615,000 in August 2020 at a Christie’s auction.

Jordan’s autographed size-13 lace-ups were in good overall condition, with signs of court wear and tear, Sotheby’s said.

Cryptocurrency: Luno resumes naira deposit, withdrawal for Nigerians

0

Nigerians trading cryptocurrency on Luno will be able to deposit and withdraw in local currency from November, the trading platform said on Monday.

Luno halted naira deposit and withdrawal for Nigerian cryptocurrency traders in February after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) prohibited cryptocurrency trading.

The ban on cryptocurrency forced changes in the operations of Luno and other Nigerian fintech companies into cryptocurrency trading.

However, Luno disclosed that the withdrawal and depositing of funds for Nigerian users will be done through a third-party platform.

Luno warns users that it “does not set the price of bitcoin or any cryptocurrencies, we only facilitate transactions between customers.”
