Victor Moses Makes Shock Return To England, Joins Luton Town

0

Former Nigerian international, Victor Moses, has joined English side Luton Town, the club has confirmed.

The 33-year-old became a free agent in the summer after leaving Spartak Moscow, the club he joined in 2021.

Hatters manager, Rob Edwards, said the arrival of the former Wigan winger could help the club in his promotion quest.

“Victor is one we’ve been talking to for quite a while. He trained with us last week and played 60 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game, and we decided because we think he’s able to come in and help us.

“He gives us more strength in depth and versatility because he’s someone who can play both sides or as a number ten.

“He’s played for so many different clubs in different ways and shapes, and under different managers, so he’s tactically aware. We think he’s someone who can provide some really good competition for us,” he said.

Before moving to Russia, Moses had a successful stint with Chelsea.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won the Premier League and FA Cup in successive years in 2017 and 2018.

He was part of the squad that won the Europa League in 2012/13, but spent much of his nine years as a Chelsea player out on loan, playing for European giants Liverpool and Inter Milan, as well as domestically for West Ham and Stoke and in Turkey with Fenerbache.

Federal High Court Launches Online Portal for Affidavit Procurement

0

The Federal High Court has made a groundbreaking move by launching an online affidavit system, allowing the public to conveniently procure affidavits through a digital platform. This new development aligns with global best practices in the legal sector, streamlining processes and reducing the need for physical presence at the court.

This innovation, introduced by Chief Judge of the FHC, Justice John Tsoho, is aimed at enhancing efficiency in the judicial system. The online affidavit portal can be accessed via portal.fhc.gov.ng, offering services such as affidavits for loss of items, age declaration, and change of name.

Mr. Agwu Charles, head of the ICT department at the Lagos High Court, explained how the general public can easily use this new system. “Affidavits for non-case-related matters can now be obtained online by visiting portal.fhc.gov.ng and following the simple instructions provided,” he stated.

Adding more details, DCR Longe clarified that while the system currently handles non-case-related affidavits, affidavits that are filed in support of a case will still require manual submission due to the complexity involved.

The Federal High Court urges Nigerians to take advantage of this online affidavit system, which eliminates the need for physical presence at the court for specific affidavit types. This marks a significant step toward digital transformation in Nigeria’s legal sector, providing a more efficient and accessible way to procure essential legal documents.

By leveraging this online platform, the court hopes to enhance accessibility, reduce crowding in courtrooms, and modernize its operations in line with the growing trend of digitalization in the judiciary.

Group Tasks Women To Demand Environmental Justice

The Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, has told women in Niger Delta to speak up against environmental injustices arising from oil extraction in their communities.

Dr Emem Okon, the Executive Director of the Rivers-based advocacy group, made the call in Port Harcourt, south-south Rivers state capital at a conference on the Power-up Project in Nigeria.

At the conference with the theme: “Enhancing the Role of Women in Environmental Conservation” Okon said that women held a critical stake in the call for environmental justice in the Niger Delta region.

Okon said that the power-up project was organised to empower grassroots women in identified project sites across Nigeria and Zimbabwe to speak up against environmental injustice.

“Women should be in the forefront of the agitation for measures to mitigate the impacts of oil extractions in their communities.

The threat on the ecosystem by climate change is a call on communities to take actions towards protecting their environments,” she said.

She said that oil and gas communities had continued to suffer from land degradation due to oil extraction activities.

She said that the effect of oil exploration and extraction on the environment had aggravated hunger, crime and declining sources of livelihood.

“The communities have the responsibility to protect their land from abuse, they must raise their voices against injustices.

“Women suffer health challenges, including cancer and reproductive issues due to pollution from oil extraction.

“There is need to continue saying no and urging duty bearers to address pollution in the communities until justice is achieved,” she said.

The executive director stated that women should endeavour to actively advocate for clear development visions for their communities.

She said that the power-up project, sponsored by UK-based Comic Relief, was being implemented in Nigeria by Kebetkache in collaboration with partners from Zimbabwe and South Africa.

She said that the scheme, launched in Akwa Ibom and Rivers in 2020, had trained women to assert their rights towards rejecting harmful resource extraction practices.

According to her, the initiative has engaged women from Abua, Nsisioken, and Okwuzi communities in Rivers, as well as Ibeno in Akwa Ibom, in diverse local advocacy actions.

“These actions included campaigns for women’s access to land, clean water, and inclusion in community development committees.

“Some of the women engaged in tree planting in their communities, stakeholders dialogue, story-telling sessions, and advocacy for inheritance rights, among others,” she said.

In a keynote address, Mrs Nkemdirim Odoya, Director of Forestry, Rivers State Ministry of Agriculture, reiterated the vital roles that women could to enhance environmental safety and conservation.

She said that it was not in doubt that women played prominent role in safeguarding herbs and medicinal plants in local communities.

“Women are the gatekeepers that discourage and prevent people from destroying medicinal plants.

“It is important that they are empowered financially to enhance their conservation efforts in the communities,” she said.

Odoya emphasised the ecological importance of trees in purifying air, enriching the soil, conserving water, and providing habitats for wildlife.

Business man and investor Elon Reeve Musk says SpaceX plans to launch its first uncrewed Starships to Mars in two years, coinciding with the upcoming Earth-Mars transfer window.

In a social media post on X, Musk explained that these initial missions would test the reliability of landing on Mars without a crew.

If successful, crewed missions to Mars could begin in four years.

Musk envisions that flight rates will increase exponentially, aiming to establish a self-sustaining city on Mars within about 20 years.

Earlier this year, he had projected that the first uncrewed Starship would land on Mars within five years and the first crewed missions would follow within seven years.

In June, SpaceX achieved a significant milestone when a Starship rocket completed a high-speed, hypersonic return from space, culminating in a successful landing in the Indian Ocean on its fourth attempt.

Musk is counting on Starship to meet his ambitions of creating a versatile next-generation spacecraft for transporting people and cargo to the moon within this decade, with the ultimate goal of reaching Mars.

How the N50 Transfer Levy Can Stifle Nigeria’s Fintech Growth and Impact Everyday Transactions

0

The Federal Government’s recent decision to impose a N50 Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) on transactions of N10,000 and above has ignited a heated debate among economists, fintech companies, and the general public. Set to take effect on September 9, 2024, this policy is intended to boost government revenue, but critics argue that it may have detrimental effects on Nigeria’s burgeoning fintech sector and its broader economy.

Economic Impact and Innovation Stifling

The primary concern among economists is that this levy could significantly hinder the growth of the fintech sector, which has been instrumental in promoting financial inclusion and driving digital transactions in Nigeria. Economist argues that even a modest fee can alter consumer behavior, potentially driving users away from fintech platforms to alternative services that offer lower or no fees. This could result in a slowdown in the adoption of digital transactions and, ultimately, a negative impact on the economy.

Some described the move as a “desperate” attempt to shore up government revenue. Others questioned the necessity of this additional levy, given the government’s existing revenue streams from sources like VAT increases, fuel subsidy removals, and customs tariffs. The focus should be on strengthening regulatory frameworks to address issues such as cybersecurity threats and predatory lending practices, rather than imposing new fees on consumers.

The Fintech Sector’s Role and Response

Fintech companies like OPay and Moniepoint have played a crucial role in transforming Nigeria’s financial landscape. By offering innovative solutions, they have made digital transactions more accessible, particularly to the unbanked population. The N50 levy, critics argue, disrupts this positive trend and could dampen the sector’s growth.

The Nigerian fintech ecosystem has already demonstrated significant resilience and potential, with cashless transactions surging to over N600 trillion by the end of 2023, a substantial increase from N395.38 trillion in 2022. This growth trajectory is expected to continue, with digital payments becoming increasingly central to Nigeria’s financial system.

Student and Public Backlash

The levy also faces opposition from various sectors, including students. National Association of Nigerian Students, has voiced strong objections to the policy. Highlighting that the N50 levy disproportionately affects students, who rely on financial transfers for educational expenses and daily needs. The policy’s extension to fintech platforms, which previously offered free or lower-cost services, exacerbates financial pressures on this vulnerable group.

Other argue that the government should seek alternative revenue sources that do not place an additional burden on ordinary citizens. Investments in sectors such as agriculture, education, infrastructure, and job creation are proposed as more sustainable ways to enhance government revenue without stifling economic growth or innovation.

The introduction of the N50 Electronic Money Transfer Levy is a contentious issue that raises important questions about the balance between government revenue needs and the promotion of financial innovation. While the levy aims to boost fiscal resources, its potential to dampen the fintech sector’s growth and impose additional financial strain on the public, particularly students, cannot be ignored. As Nigeria navigates these complex dynamics, it will be crucial for policymakers to carefully consider the broader economic implications and seek solutions that support both revenue generation and the continued advancement of digital financial services.

FG Clarifies Age Limit For Under-18 WASSCE, UTME Students

0

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that the ministry has not stopped under-18 students from the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination and the National Examinations Council exams.

The Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, made the clarification in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists at an event to mark the 2024 International Literacy Day.

Sununu said it was highly disappointing that the public misinterpreted the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman’s words.

He said that the minister was speaking on the 18 years of entry age into the tertiary institutions as was practiced in the 6:3:3:4 system of education.

“We have agreed that we are going to consider it as a work-in-progress. The National Assembly is working and we are also working. It was shocking to say that a university in this country gave admission to children ages 10, 11, and 12 years. This is totally wrong.

“We are not saying that there are no exceptions; we know we can have talented students that have the IQ of an adult even at ages six and seven, but these are very few.

“There must be a rule, and the ministry is looking at developing a guideline on how to identify a talented child so that parents don’t say we are blocking their children’s chances.

“Nobody said no child will write WAEC, NECO, or any other examination unless at age 18. This is a misconception and misrepresentation of what we have said,” he said.

Speaking on International Literacy Day, Sununu underscored the critical role of literacy in fostering mutual understanding, peace, and socio-economic development.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing literacy challenges through the Education for Renewed Hope roadmap (2024-2027).

Meanwhile, UNESCO’s Country Representative, Diallo Abdourahamane, re-echoed that literacy remained a fundamental human right, hence the need to create a just, peaceful and sustainable society.

The ILD is celebrated annually on September 8 and is aimed at highlighting the importance of literacy to individuals, communities, and societies.

Ngelale also stepped down from his positions as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen. According to Ngelale, this decision was made after significant consultations with his family regarding an ongoing medical situation.

The statement read: “On Friday, I submitted a memo to the Chief of Staff informing him that I am taking an indefinite leave of absence to address medical concerns affecting my immediate nuclear family.

“While I understand that the nation’s duties cannot be delayed, this difficult decision — stepping down from my roles as Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen — was made in light of the deteriorating situation at home.”

Ngelale expressed his hopes of returning to national service when the situation improves while asking for privacy for his family during this challenging time.

Appointed as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu on August 1, 2023, Ngelale’s appointment became effective on July 31, 2023, as per a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. His term was expected to last the duration of the administration unless otherwise directed by the President.

In May 2024, Ngelale was appointed as the first Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action by President Tinubu. He also served as the Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen and Secretary of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions.

Born on November 13, 1986, in Platteville, Wisconsin, USA, Ngelale has a diverse background, with a Nigerian father from Eleme, Rivers State, and a German-American mother. He is a respected Nigerian broadcast journalist, having worked as a senior reporter and presenter at Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Channels Television.

Between 2019 and 2023, he served as Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs to President Muhammadu Buhari and was a co-principal spokesperson for the Bola Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections.
